    Cage culture has been demonstrated as a suitable tool to enhance marine fish production in coastal areas by Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in recent years.     Eleven bacterial species isolated from water and sediment media from organic manured carp cultured ponds with cow manure and biogas slurry comprised diverse bacterial strains of Methylococcus, Pseudomonas, Aquaspirillum, Bacillus, Planococcus, Micrococcus, Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Listeria, Sporosarcina and Sporolactobacillus. Bacillus sp. (44.1%) along with other gram-positive forms like Planococcus sp. (14.3%) and Micrococcus sp. (10.7%) were the important microbial groups and their occurrence may be attributed to allochthonous organic enrichment and active sediment-water nutrient interactions

    Gene network analysis of poplar root transcriptome in response to drought stress identifies a PtaJAZ3PtaRAP2.6-centered hierarchical network

    Using time-series transcriptomic data from poplar roots undergoing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress, we built a genetic network model of the involved putative molecular responses. We found that the network resembled a hierarchical structure. The highest hierarchical level in this structure is occupied by 9 genes, which we called superhubs because they were primarily connected to 18 hub genes, which are then connected to 2,934 terminal genes. We were only able to regenerate transgenic plants overexpressing two of the superhubs, suggesting that the majority of the superhubs might interfere with the regeneration process and did not allow recovery of transgenic plants. The two superhubs encode proteins with closest homology to JAZ3 and RAP2.6 genes of Arabidopsis and were consequently named PtaJAZ3 and PtaRAP2.6. PtaJAZ3 and PtaRAP2.6 overexpressing transgenic lines showed a significant increase in both root elongation and lateral root proliferation and these responses were specific for the drought stress conditions and were highly correlated with the levels of overexpression of the transgenes. Several lines of evidence suggest of regulatory interactions between the two superhubs. Both superhubs were significantly induced by methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Because jasmonate signaling involves ubiquitin-mediated proteasome degradation, treatment with proteasome inhibitor abolished the MeJA induction for both genes. PtaRAP2.6 was upregulated in PtaJAZ3 transgenics but PtaJAZ3 expression was not affected in the PtaRAP2.6 overexpressors. The discovery of the two genes and further future insights into the associated mechanisms can lead to improved understanding and novel approaches to regulate root architecture in relation to drought stress

    The mean periphyton counts in the surface and subsurface waters of the fish ponds with applications of cow manure at 10тАЙt/ha/yr; urea at 100тАЙkgтАЙN/ha/yr and single super phosphate at 50тАЙkgтАЙP/ha/yr in the first treatment; biogas slurry at 15тАЙt/ha/yr and inorganic fertilizers as in the previous treatment in the second treatment; biogas slurry at 30тАЙt/ha/yr in the third and biogas slurry at 30тАЙt/ha/yr with supplementary feed were 333, 365, 407, 433/cm2/day and 230, 284, 348, 377/cm2/day, respectively. Higher counts were observed in treatment 4, followed by treatments 3, 2 and 1 showing significant differences with higher counts in the surface waters. The species diversity indices were more in the third and fourth treatments with higher diversity at the surface levels. The dominance of Bacillariophyceae in the surface waters was distinct (45.9тАУ60.6%) attributing to the higher nutrient availability on mineralization of the easily decomposable substrate. Water quality parameters in all the four treatments were in the normal ranges. The representations of both Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae were similar in the subsurface waters (36.6тАУ50.8% and 28.2тАУ36.4%). There was increase in the percentage composition of protozoans in the surface waters in the slurry-applied ponds (0.6тАУ3.3%). Variations in rotifers were moderate, the respective representation ranges being 0.9тАУ3.4%, 2.2тАУ5.3% in the two levels and cladocerans in subsurface waters were higher with means of 10.7, 4.3, 4.9 and 4.7. Copepods were the dominant group in the animal assemblages at the surface level with the means of 3.0%, 2.3%, 4.0% and 5.0%.
