The Effectiveness of Instructional Video in the Acquisition of Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor Skills in Practical Sports Therapy Rehabilitation.
The use of instructional multimedia, particularly video, within education is steadily increasing although the evidence-base regarding its usage typically only indicates that it is equivalent to or as effective as live demonstration or traditional teaching methods. The current study undertook a longitudinal quasi-experimental crossover study, over three consecutive academic years to evaluate the efficacy of instructional video to teach cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills to level 5 undergraduate sports therapy students. Through the use of a crossover design students undertook both the video and control conditions, they were assessed formatively on a weekly basis to provide a consistent measure of performance throughout the eighteen weeks of data collection within each year. The instructional videos used within the study were based upon (as far as possible) the multimedia principles proposed by Mayer to reduce extraneous cognitive load and maximise essential intrinsic and germane cognitive load. The results from the study were analysed with the use of effect size statistics and interpreted though the use of magnitude based inferences, an emerging alternative to the traditional use of null hypothesis testing. The findings of the study indicate that the use of the instructional videos was beneficial to the vast majority of the students, which builds upon the current evidence-base as it demonstrates that they can be used to enhance academic practice rather than be used as an equivalent resource
A Comparison of Reading Comprehension and Problem Solving Abilities
Recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Washington State Commission on Student Learning Essential Academic Requirements are addressed. Reading comprehension and problem solving skills of 9th grade students at Zillah High School are compared to see if a correlation between these two abilities exists. Recommendations for creating and implementing a curriculum are given
A Need of Further Training for Marriage and Family Therapy Students’ on Food Addiction and Related Eating Disorders
The purpose of this study was to explore Marriage and Family Therapy students’ perspectives regarding food addiction and associated eating disorders, as a clinical treatment issue. In a standard addictions course housed in a Marriage and Family Therapy program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), 20 students completed a qualitative survey where they reflected on the topic of food addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, and Bulimia Nervosa, within the context of individual, couple, and family relationships. In the study four major themes emerged, which included (1) Defining Food Addiction, (2) Perceptions of Eating Disorders, (3) Conceptualizing Systemic Treatment, and (4) Experiences in clinical training. Clinical implications, recommendations for MFT education, clinical practice, and future research are discussed. Findings suggest that while MFT students in the study were well versed in conceptualized systemic treatment, it was of a general treatment and understanding using MFT theory, and not in relation to or specifically concerning food addictions and their connection or distinction from Binge Eating Disorder and/or other eating disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, potentially impacting the level of skillfully and appropriately working with clients
Pastoral Leaders’ Perception of Obesity and Their Role Within Faith-Based Organizations
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of pastoral leaders regarding obesity and health within faith-based organizations (FBOs). In this study, the authors focused on gaining additional insight regarding how pastoral leaders conceptualize and make sense of their roles in terms of health promotion within FBOs. Utilizing a qualitative research methodological approach, specifically Qualitative Description, authors administered a qualitative survey to 12 participants which yielded three emerging themes: (1) perceived scope, (2) understanding and use of resources, and (3) defining obesity through pastoral leaders’ perspectives. Measuring Galaxy Environments with Deep Redshift Surveys
We study the applicability of several galaxy environment measures
(n^th-nearest-neighbor distance, counts in an aperture, and Voronoi volume)
within deep redshift surveys. Mock galaxy catalogs are employed to mimic
representative photometric and spectroscopic surveys at high redshift (z ~ 1).
We investigate the effects of survey edges, redshift precision, redshift-space
distortions, and target selection upon each environment measure. We find that
even optimistic photometric redshift errors (\sigma_z = 0.02) smear out the
line-of-sight galaxy distribution irretrievably on small scales; this
significantly limits the application of photometric redshift surveys to
environment studies. Edges and holes in a survey field dramatically affect the
estimation of environment, with the impact of edge effects depending upon the
adopted environment measure. These edge effects considerably limit the
usefulness of smaller survey fields (e.g. the GOODS fields) for studies of
galaxy environment. In even the poorest groups and clusters, redshift-space
distortions limit the effectiveness of each environment statistic; measuring
density in projection (e.g. using counts in a cylindrical aperture or a
projected n^th-nearest-neighbor distance measure) significantly improves the
accuracy of measures in such over-dense environments. For the DEEP2 Galaxy
Redshift Survey, we conclude that among the environment estimators tested the
projected n^th-nearest-neighbor distance measure provides the most accurate
