    Synopsis of the genus Ponthieva (Orchidaceae) in Colombia

    The Neotropical orchid genus Ponthieva R. Br. was established in 1813. The 70 representatives of this taxon are terrestrial, lithophytic, or epiphytic plants with basal, sessile, or petiolate leaves which are glabrous or pubescent. Their erect peduncle is pubescent and terminated by lax, few- to many-flowered raceme. Flowers are non-resupinate, with dissimilar sepals and asymmetrical petals which are adnate to the sides of the gynostemium. The lip is uppermost, fused to the lower part of the gynostemium. Here the synopsis of Colombian Ponthieva is presented. A list of national genus representatives includes 26 species, including one new species, P. vallecaucana Szlach. Kolan. & Olędrzyńska, sp. nov., discovered during this study. We did not confirm occurrence of four species reported in previous research. To facilitate process of identification of genus representatives, we divided Ponthieva into six morphological complexes based on vegetative and floral characters. The highest number of species was found in Magdalena and Cauca Valley montane forests. Lectotypes for Ponthieva inaudita and P. mandonii are designated. Morphological characteristics and illustrations of perianth segments of Colombian representatives of the genus are provided as well as a key for their identification

    Diversity and Taxonomy of Telipogon (Orchidaceae) in Colombia and Adjacent Areas

    The neotropical orchid genus Telipogon Kunth was established in 1815 and currently comprises more than 250 species. Representatives of this genus are generally epiphytic plants lacking pseudobulbs. The stem is either abbreviated or elongate and the leaves are conduplicate. Flowers are usually resupinate with small sepals and petals similar to the lip, but sometimes different. The gynostemium is covered by stiff or soft hairs. This monograph is a presentation of taxonomic diversity of the orchid genus Telipogon in Colombia and adjecent areas. Morphological characteristics of a total of 96 Telipogon species from Colombia are presented together with information about over 50 taxa found in neighboring countries. A brief discussion of an additional seven taxa described in Colombia, but insufficiently characterized, is also given. Illustrations of perianth segments of almost all national genus representatives are provided. Twenty-five species are described in this paper for the first time – Telipogon alinae, T. bicallosus, T. bugalagrandei, T. castanedoi, T. chimborazoensis, T. cocuyensis, T. cuatrecasasii, T. fassetti, T. fernandezii, T. flabellatus, T. garayi, T. hirsutus, T. huertasii, T. idroboi, T. killipi, T. kraenzlinianus, T. orozcoi, T. pasquillensis, T. schlimii, T. spathipetala, T. sumapazensis, T. tolimensis, T. trianae, T. trilabiatus, and T. verrucosus. Several morphologically consistent groups are distinguished to facilitate identification of Telipogon representatives.     A DuMond-type crystal spectrometer for synchrotron-based X-ray emission studies in the energy range of 15–26 keV

    The design and performance of a high-resolution transmission-type X-ray spectrometer for use in the 15–26 keV energy range at synchrotron light sources is reported. Monte Carlo X-ray-tracing simulations were performed to optimize the performance of the transmission-type spectrometer, based on the DuMond geometry, for use at the Super X-ray absorption beamline of the Swiss Light Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This spectrometer provides an instrumental energy resolution of 3.5 eV for X-ray emission lines around 16 keV and 12.5 eV for emission lines at 26 keV, which is comparable to the natural linewidths of the K and L X-ray transitions in the covered energy range. First experimental data are presented and compared with results of the Monte Carlo X-ray simulations

A distribution map of the new species is presented. A dichotomous key for determination of the Gomphichis species in northern South America is provided. Conservation status assessments are provided for each species; current International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categories and criteria are listed. A brief discussion of spiranthoid orchids taxonomy, conservation status of species, endemism in the Andes and paramo are presented
