Exchange listing changes: volatility and liquidity effects in Taiwan
We examine the volatility, liquidity and returns effects on stocks that switch exchange listings from the ROSE to the TSE in Taiwan from 1992 to 2000. Switching Jims earn statistically positive returns before the transfer day and earn statistically negative returns after that day. We find evidence of improved liquidity, ownership dispersion and actual trading volume for such firms. The relative volatility of trading volume, compared against the firms ' own histories, and volatility of return also increase after a listing change. We show that increased trading volume and liquidity are associated with the abnormal returns around the transfer date. We find no evidence that the past earnings of firms significantly affect the abnormal returns realized in the post-listing period
VaR and the cross-section of expected stock returns: an emerging market evidence
In this paper we investigate the explanatory power of the market beta, firm size, and the book-to-market ratio, as well as Value-at-Risk regarding the cross-sectional expected stock returns in a less developed stock market – Taiwan's stock market. The main purpose is to examine whether the Value-at-Risk factor has marginal explanatory power related to the Fama-French three-factor model. The empirical results show that Value-at-Risk can account for the average stock returns at both 1% and 5% significance levels based on cross-sectional regression analysis. Moreover, from the perspective of the time series regression, the Value-at-Risk factor can also demonstrate the variation of the stock market, especially for the larger companies in the Taiwan stock market

Acupuncture-Related Rapid Dermal Spread of Breast Cancer: A Rare Case
Many ethnic Chinese patients seek second or adjuvant alternative therapies after breast cancer is diagnosed. Chinese herbs and acupuncture are the most popular methods in East Asia. We present a case of acupuncture manipulation-related cutaneous spread that no literature reported before. Post-acupuncture cutaneous spread was noted in a 54-year-old woman with left neck lymph node recurrence after complete surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. The results of chest computed tomography and skin biopsy showed the metastatic breast cancer in the dermis. Six courses of paclitaxel and gemcitabine followed by trastuzumab were given as therapeutic chemotherapy. The neck mass and cutaneous lesions subsided after 2 courses of chemotherapy. Direct puncture of a metastatic lymph node might increase the incidence of tumor spread on the skin. Therefore, despite the efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine, its safety and possible side effects should be more emphasized
Hygiene Practices: Are They Protective Factors For Eczema Symptoms?
Introduction: Exact etiology and proper treatment of eczema are still unknown.
The hygiene hypothesis and epidermal barrier dysfunction hypothesis attempted to
give some plausible explanations for these issues but they still remain unclear. The
identification of factors, including hygiene practices, related to eczema symptoms
(ES) could shed some light on these matters. Therefore, this study aimed to
determine risk factors related to ES and the ES prevalence in two disparate areas in
terms of urbanization in Aceh, Indonesia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study with convenience sampling was conducted
among schoolchildren living in urban and rural Aceh. Data on ES, sociodemographic
characteristics, environmental factors, partial ablution and other
hygiene related factors were collected by parental questionnaires. In addition,
children’s anthropometric measurements were also collected.
Results: The prevalence of current ES in the study population was 21%. When
stratifying by residency, the prevalence of ES in urban and rural area was 20.93%
versus 21.05%. Partial ablution was independently associated with a reduced risk of
ES (OR
¼
0.36; 95% CI 0.13–0.96). Important risk factors for ES were paternal
history of allergic disease (OR
¼
4.09%; 95% CI 1.51–11.11) and belonging to the
older group of schoolchildren (10–13 years old) (OR
¼
2.57; 95% CI 1.03–6.40).
Conclusions: There were no significant differences in the prevalence of ES between
urban and rural settings, and partial ablution had a protective effect on ES. These
findings support the epidermal barrier dysfunction hypothesis as a possible
pathway of eczema
Prognostic Implications of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor and KRAS Gene Mutations and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Gene Copy Numbers in Patients with Surgically Resectable Non-small Cell Lung Cancer in Taiwan
IntroductionThe prognostic role of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in patients with surgically resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment has not been well established, because the reports are still few.Materials and MethodsWe analyzed the survival data of 164 patients with surgically resectable (stages I to IIIA) NSCLC of two year groups (1996–1998 and 2002–2004), and compared with EGFR mutations, KRAS mutations, and EGFR gene copy numbers.ResultsComparing the survival of wild-type patients and patients having L858R mutations or exon 19 deletion, the median survival was much longer for patient with EGFR mutations (54.7 months) than wild type (34.9 months). The difference was not statistically significant by univariate analysis (p = 0.1981) but had borderline significance by multivariate analyses (p = 0.0506). In addition, the 3-year survival rates of patients with EGFR mutations were also significantly higher than wild type (p = 0.0232). After exclusion of 18 patients treated by EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor for tumor recurrence, the trends were still the same. Patients with KRAS mutations had shorter median survival (21 months) than wild type (44.4 months). Patients with EGFR polysomy (≧copies) also had longer median survival (56.2 months) than wild type (53.4 months). But the survival differences of these two genetic markers were all not significant statistically.ConclusionIt is intriguing that patients with NSCLC with EGFR mutations had better survival than wild type. Such a tumor biology may confound the survival data in a study without the stratification by EGFR mutation
