Effects of different tooth movement patterns and aligner thicknesses on maxillary arch expansion with clear aligners: a three-dimensional finite element study
ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of different tooth movement patterns and aligner thicknesses on teeth and periodontal tissues during maxillary arch expansion with clear aligners, to facilitate more precise and efficient clinical orthodontic treatments.MethodsThree-dimensional models including teeth, maxilla, periodontal ligament, and aligner were constructed and subjected to finite element analysis. Tooth displacement trends and periodontal ligament stresses were measured for seven tooth displacement patterns (divided into three categories including overall movement of premolars and molars with gradually increasing molar expansion in each step; distributed movement of premolars and molars; and alternating movement between premolars and molars at intervals) and two aligner thicknesses (0.5Â mm and 0.75Â mm) during maxillary arch expansion with clear aligners.ResultsWhen expanding the maxillary arch with clear aligners, the effective expansion of the target teeth mainly showed a tilting movement trend. Increasing the amount of molar expansion increased the buccal displacement of the first molar but decreased the buccal displacement of the premolars. The mean buccal displacement of the target teeth was greater in the posterior teeth interval alternating movement group (0.026Â mm) than in the premolar/molar distributed movement group (0.016Â mm) and the overall movement group (0.015Â mm). Increasing aligner thickness resulted in greater buccal displacement of the crowns and increased stress on the periodontal ligaments.ConclusionIncreasing the amount of molar expansion reduces the efficiency of premolar expansion. Alternating movement of premolars and molars at intervals achieves a higher arch expansion efficiency, but attention should be paid to the anchorage of adjacent teeth. Increasing the thickness of the aligner increases the expansion efficiency but may also increase the burden on the periodontal tissues
SNP-revealed genetic diversity in wild emmer wheat correlates with ecological factors
Abstract Background Patterns of genetic diversity between and within natural plant populations and their driving forces are of great interest in evolutionary biology. However, few studies have been performed on the genetic structure and population divergence in wild emmer wheat using a large number of EST-related single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Results In the present study, twenty-five natural wild emmer wheat populations representing a wide range of ecological conditions in Israel and Turkey were used. Genetic diversity and genetic structure were investigated using over 1,000 SNP markers. A moderate level of genetic diversity was detected due to the biallelic property of SNP markers. Clustering based on Bayesian model showed that grouping pattern is related to the geographical distribution of the wild emmer wheat. However, genetic differentiation between populations was not necessarily dependent on the geographical distances. A total of 33 outlier loci under positive selection were identified using a F ST -outlier method. Significant correlations between loci and ecogeographical factors were observed. Conclusions Natural selection appears to play a major role in generating adaptive structures in wild emmer wheat. SNP markers are appropriate for detecting selectively-channeled adaptive genetic diversity in natural populations of wild emmer wheat. This adaptive genetic diversity is significantly associated with ecological factors
Multi-ancestry genome-wide association study accounting for gene-psychosocial factor interactions identifies novel loci for blood pressure traits
Psychological
and social factors are known to influence blood pressure (BP) and risk
of hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases. To identify
novel BP loci, we carried out genome-wide association meta-analyses of
systolic, diastolic, pulse, and mean arterial BP, taking into account
the interaction effects of genetic variants with three psychosocial
factors: depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and social support.
Analyses were performed using a two-stage design in a sample of up to
128,894 adults from five ancestry groups. In the combined meta-analyses
of stages 1 and 2, we identified 59 loci (p value < 5e−8), including
nine novel BP loci. The novel associations were observed mostly with
pulse pressure, with fewer observed with mean arterial pressure. Five
novel loci were identified in African ancestry, and all but one showed
patterns of interaction with at least one psychosocial factor.
Functional annotation of the novel loci supports a major role for genes
implicated in the immune response (PLCL2), synaptic function and neurotransmission (LIN7A and PFIA2), as well as genes previously implicated in neuropsychiatric or stress-related disorders (FSTL5 and CHODL).
These findings underscore the importance of considering psychological
and social factors in gene discovery for BP, especially in non-European
populations
Therapeutic effects of blood purification in treatment of fulminant hepatic failure
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical effects of blood purification for treating fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). METHODS: Thirty-three severe FHF patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) above grade III were subjected to a combined blood purification treatment in addition to the comprehensive liver protection therapy. Patients underwent continuous hemofiltration on a daily basis during the daytime followed by sequential treatment with plasma exchange or hemodialysis every 2-3 days. The therapeutic effects of this treatment were evaluated. RESULTS: After treatment with blood purification, restoration of consciousness (those who abandoned the treatment without restoration of consciousness were excluded) was achieved in 6 of 8 cases (75%) in acute liver failure (ALF) group, 3 of 3 cases (100%) in subacute liver failure (SALF) group, and 9 of 14 cases (64.29%) in acute/subacute on chronic liver failure (A/SCLF) group. Of all cases, 11 patients restored consciousness after 7 days in a coma. The rate of long-term survival (those who abandoned the treatment were excluded) was 3/7 (42.86%) for ALF group, 2/2 (100%) for SALF group, and 1/11 (9.09%) for A/SCLF group. The levels of hemoglobin and platelet in peripheral blood were significantly reduced after blood purification. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of FHF patients with daily continuous hemofiltration during the daytime is effective in treating HE and in improving health status in the early stages of the disease. Long-term prognosis also benefits from this treatment. The rate of consciousness recovery and long-term survival is highest in SALF group followed by ALF group. This treatment is less effective in A/SCLF patients. It should be noted that blood purification procedure may cause damage to blood cells
Spatial distribution, ecological risk and health risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural soil from Ankang basin, Shaanxi Province
In order to assess the heavy metal pollution features, ecological dangers, and health risk status posed to human beings by soils in the Ankang Basin, a study was conducted. This involved the collection of 38 surface soil samples, followed by the determination of elemental levels of arsenic, mercury, copper, cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, and zinc. The concentrations of arsenic, mercury, copper, cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, and zinc were quantified through the collection of 38 surface soil samples. The data obtained from the study was subjected to analysis and evaluation utilizing various academic methodologies, including the geo-accumulation index method, potential ecological risk assessment method, human health risk assessment model, and Monte Carlo simulation method. The findings indicated that the concentrations of the eight heavy metals in the soil above the background levels, with only Cadmium (Cd) marginally surpassing the threshold set for controlling soil pollution risks. The ground accumulation index revealed a higher degree of soil pollution with mercury, cadmium, copper, and zinc components. According to the possible ecological risk index, the presence of mercury and cadmium elements poses significant ecological hazards. The geographical distribution analysis suggests that these risks mostly stem from the combined impacts of human activities and the topographical and geomorphological characteristics of the river valley. The findings of the human health risk assessment indicated that the non-carcinogenic risk fell within acceptable limits. Additionally, it was observed that the carcinogenic risk associated with arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and nickel was comparatively greater for children as compared to adults. The results of the Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the non-carcinogenic hazards have a negligible effect on human health. However, it was seen that arsenic and nickel have a greater likelihood of presenting a substantial carcinogenic risk to humans, particularly in relation to the pediatric population, hence exerting a more pronounced impact on their health. In general, it is observed that conventional deterministic risk assessments tend to overstate the potential health risks associated with a given situation. Conversely, the utilization of Monte Carlo simulations has been found to effectively mitigate uncertainties in health risk assessments. It has been observed that children exhibit a higher vulnerability to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health impacts resulting from exposure to heavy metals present in soil, in comparison to adults. It is recommended that residents prioritize the surveillance of soil heavy metals in relation to potential impacts on human health
Aggravating Effects of Psychological Stress on Ligature-Induced Periodontitis via the Involvement of Local Oxidative Damage and NF-κB Activation
Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and psychological factors play an important role in the development of periodontitis. To elucidate the adverse effects of psychological stress on the inflammatory process and redox status of periodontitis tissue, fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the control, experimental periodontitis, psychological stress, experimental periodontitis plus psychological stress, and experimental periodontitis plus psychological stress plus fluoxetine groups. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was used to establish psychological stress, and silk ligature was used to induce experimental periodontitis. Four weeks later, stressed rats showed altered behaviour, serum hormone levels, and sucrose preference. More obvious alveolar bone loss and attachment loss and higher protein expressions of inflammatory cytokines were observed in the experimental periodontitis plus psychological stress group. The combination of CUMS and periodontitis had synergistic effects on increasing hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) protein expression and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and decreasing antioxidant enzyme activities compared with those in the stress or periodontitis groups. Moreover, psychological stress further increased p-IκBα and p-NF-κB p65 protein levels and decreased IκBα protein levels in periodontitis rats. Fluoxetine administration alleviated the adverse effects of psychological stress on the progression of periodontitis in rats. These results hint us that psychological stress could aggravate inflammation in periodontitis tissues, which may be partly due to local worsening of oxidative damage and further activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signalling pathway
