Trade Adjustment Assistance for Farmers (TAAF) is a national multifaceted USDA program that provided technical and financial assistance to farmers and fishermen adversely affected by import competition. This article describes how Extension was successfully mobilized to deliver the TAAF program to 10,983 producers across the nation using innovative education technologies to achieve program objectives and improve the economic well-being of participating farmers and fisherman. The innovative technologies included online curricula and business planning, the use of personal business planning consultants, and linking Extension education outcomes to financial assistance payments that producers used primarily to invest in their business

Ecology of woody riparian vegetation in tributaries of the Upper Grande Ronde River basin, Oregon
Two studies on Catherine Creek and Meadow Creek of the Upper Grande Ronde
River basin, quantified several physical and biotic influences on woody riparian community
composition and structure. The Catherine Creek study examined the association of woody
riparian species with elevational and geomorphic gradients. The Meadow Creek study
examined the influence of mammal herbivory on composition and abundance of woody
riparian species.
At Catherine Creek, twenty nine plots were established at 50 m intervals of
elevation from near the stream origin at 2207 m in the Wallowa Mountains to the foothills
of the Grande Ronde Valley at 988 m. Woody plant community composition was
associated with the dominant environmental variable, elevation. Distribution of dominant
riparian species was strongly associated with fluvial surfaces. Black cottonwood (Populus
balsamifera) was associated with gravel and cobble bars proximal to the stream channel,
and along with ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) was also associated with elevated
boulder bars. Alders (A. incana and A. viridis) and willows (Salix bebbiana, S. boothii, S.
exigua, S. lucida, S. melanopsis, S. prolixa, and S. sitchensis) were associated with annual
floodplains.
At Meadow Creek, grazing by cattle was ended in 1991 on the entire study reach
and three deer and elk exclosures were built within the reach adjacent to the creek. Inside
deer/elk exclosures from 1991 to 1995, mean heights of tagged cottonwoods, willows,
and alders increased by 86% to 180%. Outside exclosures, mean heights of cottonwoods
and alders increased 109% and 99% respectively, but willows showed little change in
height. Both inside and outside of exclosures mean crown volume of cottonwoods
increased over 1000% and mean crown volume of alders increased over 600%. Willow
volume inside exclosures increased 376% in root sprouting (clonal) species and 528% in
crown sprouting (non-clonal) species, while outside of exclosures volume increased 79%
and 144% respectively. On both sides of exclosure fences, beaver herbivory had a
significant effect on cottonwood height growth in 1994 and 1995, and on height and
crown volume growth of willows in 1995. Over 50% of stem density increase on
transects was attributable to expansion within two large clones of Salix melanopsis inside
exclosures. Excluding these two clones, overall woody plant density increased by 72%
from 3.7 plants per 100 m² of transect in 1991 to 6.3 plants per 100 m² of transect in
1995
Factors Influencing Northern Bobwhite Hunter Success on a Public Wildlife Management Area in Kentucky
Hunter success is a critical measure of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) restoration. Understanding the factors influencing hunter success can guide wildlife agencies in efforts to improve success and satisfaction and sustain hunter support of conservation initiatives. We compared use of vegetation types by radiomarked bobwhite (n = 30 coveys) and hunting dogs (n = 241) equipped with Global Positioning System collars during the 2014–2015 quail hunting season on Peabody Wildlife Management Area in western Kentucky. We surveyed hunting parties (n = 252) immediately after their hunt to determine success (flushed bobwhite) and gather hunt-party characteristics. We used associated habitat metrics from the dog track, weather variables, hunter and dog characteristics (e.g., age, experience), and hunt metrics (e.g., hours hunted, no. of dogs) to determine factors that influenced hunt success. Dogs used winter wheat firebreaks more than bobwhite regardless of time of day, forested areas more than bobwhite in the morning (0700–1000 hr) and midday (1000–1300 hr), disked areas more than bobwhite during midday, and open herbaceous areas less than bobwhite during morning and midday. The probability of success was positively influenced by number of dogs and hours hunted and negatively influenced by proportion of the hunt track in disked areas. Also, hunter success was greater in November compared with December and January. Our results indicated some key features associated with bobwhite habitat (open areas) may be underexploited by hunters, whereas other features (disked areas, firebreaks, and forested areas) may be overexploited. However, success was influenced primarily by factors that may be related to covey avoidance behavior resulting from substantial hunting pressure rather than where hunters selected to hunt. Lower bobwhite encounter rates (coveys flushed/hour) could cause hunter support to wane and bias hunting data as an indicator of population abundance
Primary peripheral arterial stenoses and restenoses excised by transluminal atherectomy: A histopathologic study
Atherectomy is a new therapeutic intervention for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease, and permits the controlled excision and retrieval of portions of stenosing lesions. The gross and light microscopic features of 218 peripheral arterial stenoses resected from 100 patients by atherectomy were studied. One hundred seventy of these lesions were primary stenoses and 48 were restenoses subsequent to prior angioplasty or atherectomy. Microscopically, primary stenoses were composed of atherosclerotic plaque (150 lesions), fibrous intimai thickening (15 lesions) or thrombus alone (5 lesions). Atherosclerotic plaques had a variable morphology and, in one-third of cases, were accompanied by abundant surface thrombus that probably added to the severity of stenosis. Most patients with fibrous intimai thickening or thrombus alone had typical atherosclerotic plaque removed elsewhere from within the same artery.Intimai hyperplasia, with or without underlying residual plaque, was found at 36 sites of restenosis, the remaining 12 consisting of plaque only. Intimai hyperplasia had a distinctive histologic appearance and was due to smooth muscle cell proliferation within a loosely fibrous stroma. Superimposed thrombus may have contributed to arterial narrowing in 25% of hyperplastic and 8% of atherosclerotic restenoses (p = 0.41). Pathologic examination of tissues recovered by peripheral atherectomy is an important adjunct that may provide insight into the efficacy of vascular interventions and the phenomenon of postintervention restenosis
