Production Systems Involving Stocker Cattle and Soft Red Winter Wheat
A three year study at the Livestock and Forestry Research Station near Batesville, Arkansas evaluated production systems involving stocker cattle and soft red winter wheat. Grazing of soft red winter wheat forage from October through February followed by harvesting wheat grain or grazing through April with stocker cattle offers an alternative to conventional farming. Soft red winter wheat, when planted by September 15, produces an ample supply of high-quality forage that supports rapid growth of stocker cattle during October through April. Net income from stocker cattle averaged over 75,000,000 per year if 750,000 acres of wheat are grazed

Stoichiometry control of sputtered CuCl thin films: Influence on ultraviolet emission properties
We demonstrate that the chemical composition of the sputtered CuCl thin films could be finely controlled by adjusting the bias to the substrate. The films deposited without any intentional bias were Cl rich (CuCl1+x), a bias of −22 V yielded stoichiometric CuCl, and a further increase in the negative bias resulted in Cl deficient films (CuCl1−x). The crystalline and optical properties were found to be associated with the chemical composition. Cl rich films showed a deep level green emission at around 515 nm in addition to ultraviolet (UV) excitonic emission. The stoichiometric films have higher optical quality, exhibiting a sharp UV emission at around 385 nm at room temperature, compared to nonstoichiometric samples. Visible luminescence related to deep level defects was not observed in the stoichiometric films. Changes in energy of the flux from the target and the subsequent ion bombardment on the substrate surface are correlated with the variations in chemical composition and their impact on the film microstructure and UV emission

Blade design aspects most affecting producibility and means of measurement and control of length, scallop, fullness and straightness requirements and tolerances were extensively considered. Alternate designs of the panel seams and edge reinforcing members are believed to offer advantages of seam integrity, producibility, reliability, cost and weight. Approaches to and requirements for highly specialized metalizing methods, processes and equipment were studied and identified. Alternate methods of sail blade fabrication and related special machinery, tooling, fixtures and trade offs were examined. A preferred and recommended approach is also described. Quality control plans, inspection procedures, flow charts and special test equipment associated with the preferred manufacturing method were analyzed and are discussed
Accounting and financial reporting by a late 18th century American charity
Empirical research to date has neglected accounting and external financial reporting among 18th century American charitable institutions. Contemporary understanding of 18th century American practices is supported by evidence relating to commercial transactions primarily among colonial merchants. Our study examines the accounting and financial reporting of the Charleston Orphan House, the first municipal orphanage in America, from its inception in 1790 through its first five years of operations. The institution was established by city ordinance in 1790 which required the institution to keep a book of fair and regular accounts of all receipts and expenditures which will be subject at all times to the inspection of the Commissioners. The ordinance charged the orphanage\u27s Committee on Accounts to audit its accounts.The City Council required the institution\u27s board chairman to countersign the financial statements in 1792 before subjecting them to a second audit. The Orphan House employed a system of account books that recorded and facilitated the reporting of expenditures and sources of funds. Accounting and external reporting may have been legitimizing factors to overcome the liability of newness by promoting a sense of propriety and transparency among benefactors
Spicules and the effect of rigid rods on enclosing membrane tubes
Membrane tubes (spicules) arise in cells, or artificial membranes, in the
nonlinear deformation regime due to, e.g. the growth of microtubules, actin
filaments or sickle hemoglobin fibers towards a membrane. We calculate the
axial force exerted by the cylindrical membrane tube, and its average radius,
by taking into account steric interactions between the fluctuating membrane and
the enclosed rod. The force required to confine a fluctuating membrane near the
surface of the enclosed rod diverges as the separation approaches zero. This
results in a smooth crossover of the axial force between a square root and a
linear dependence on the membrane tension as the tension increases and the tube
radius shrinks. This crossover can occur at the most physiologically relevant
membrane tensions. Our work may be important in (i) interpreting experiments in
which axial force is related to the tube radius or membrane tension (ii)
dynamical theories for biopolymer growth in narrow tubes where these
fluctuation effects control the tube radius.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur
Semiflexible polymers: Dependence on ensemble and boundary orientations
We show that the mechanical properties of a worm-like-chain (WLC) polymer, of
contour length and persistence length \l such that t=L/\l\sim{\cal
O}(1), depend both on the ensemble and the constraint on end-orientations. In
the Helmholtz ensemble, multiple minima in free energy near persists for
all kinds of orientational boundary conditions. The qualitative features of
projected probability distribution of end to end vector depend crucially on the
embedding dimensions. A mapping of the WLC model, to a quantum particle moving
on the surface of an unit sphere, is used to obtain the statistical and
mechanical properties of the polymer under various boundary conditions and

Phase transition in the modified fiber bundle model
We extend the standard fiber bundle model (FBM) with the local load sharing
in such a way that the conservation of the total load is relaxed when an
isolated fiber is broken. In this modified FBM in one dimension (1D), it is
revealed that the model exhibits a well-defined phase transition at a finite
nonzero value of the load, which is in contrast to the standard 1D FBM. The
modified FBM defined in the Watts-Strogatz network is also investigated, and
found is the existences of two distinct transitions: one discontinuous and the

Photoelastic force measurements in granular materials
Photoelastic techniques are used to make both qualitative and quantitative
measurements of the forces within idealized granular materials. The method is
based on placing a birefringent granular material between a pair of polarizing
filters, so that each region of the material rotates the polarization of light
according to the amount of local of stress. In this review paper, we summarize
past work using the technique, describe the optics underlying the technique,
and illustrate how it can be used to quantitatively determine the vector
contact forces between particles in a 2D granular system. We provide a
description of software resources available to perform this task, as well as
