    A critical review on sustainable biochar system through gasification: energy and environmental applications

    This review lays great emphasis on production and characteristics of biochar through gasification. Specifically, the physicochemical properties and yield of biochar through the diverse gasification conditions associated with various types of biomass were extensively evaluated. In addition, potential application scenarios of biochar through gasification were explored and their environmental implications were discussed. To qualitatively evaluate biochar sustainability through the gasification process, all gasification products (i.e., syngas and biochar) were evaluated via life cycle assessment (LCA). A concept of balancing syngas and biochar production for an economically and environmentally feasible gasification system was proposed and relevant challenges and solutions were suggested in this review

    In vivo knee contact force prediction using patient-specific musculoskeletal geometry in a segment-based computational model

    Segment-based musculoskeletal models allow the prediction of muscle, ligament, and joint forces without making assumptions regarding joint degrees-of-freedom (DOF). The dataset published for the “Grand Challenge Competition to Predict in vivo Knee Loads” provides directly measured tibiofemoral contact forces for activities of daily living (ADL). For the Sixth Grand Challenge Competition to Predict in vivo Knee Loads, blinded results for “smooth” and “bouncy” gait trials were predicted using a customized patient-specific musculoskeletal model. For an unblinded comparison, the following modifications were made to improve the predictions: further customizations, including modifications to the knee center of rotation; reductions to the maximum allowable muscle forces to represent known loss of strength in knee arthroplasty patients; and a kinematic constraint to the hip joint to address the sensitivity of the segment-based approach to motion tracking artifact. For validation, the improved model was applied to normal gait, squat, and sit-to-stand for three subjects. Comparisons of the predictions with measured contact forces showed that segment-based musculoskeletal models using patient-specific input data can estimate tibiofemoral contact forces with root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.48–0.65 times body weight (BW) for normal gait trials. Comparisons between measured and predicted tibiofemoral contact forces yielded an average coefficient of determination of 0.81 and RMSEs of 0.46–1.01 times BW for squatting and 0.70–0.99 times BW for sit-to-stand tasks. This is comparable to the best validations in the literature using alternative models.</jats:p

    Bounding biomass in the Fisher equation

    The FKPP equation with a variable growth rate and advection by an incompressible velocity field is considered as a model for plankton dispersed by ocean currents. If the average growth rate is negative then the model has a survival-extinction transition; the location of this transition in the parameter space is constrained using variational arguments and delimited by simulations. The statistical steady state reached when the system is in the survival region of parameter space is characterized by integral constraints and upper and lower bounds on the biomass and productivity that follow from variational arguments and direct inequalities. In the limit of zero-decorrelation time the velocity field is shown to act as Fickian diffusion with an eddy diffusivity much larger than the molecular diffusivity and this allows a one-dimensional model to predict the biomass, productivity and extinction transitions.     Effect of biochars pyrolyzed in N2 and CO2, and feedstock on microbial community in metal(loid)s contaminated soils

    Little is known about the effects of applying amendments on soil for immobilizing metal(loid)s on the soil microbial community. Alterations in the microbial community were examined after incubation of treated contaminated soils. One soil was contaminated with Pb and As, a second soil with Cd and Zn. Red pepper stalk (RPS) and biochars produced from RPS in either N2 atmosphere (RPSN) or CO2 atmosphere (RPSC) were applied at a rate of 2.5% to the two soils and incubated for 30 days. Bacterial communities of control and treated soils were characterized by sequencing 16S rRNA genes using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing. In both soils, bacterial richness increased in the amended soils, though somewhat differently between the treatments. Evenness values decreased significantly, and the final overall diversities were reduced. The neutralization of pH, reduced available concentrations of Pb or Cd, and supplementation of available carbon and surface area could be possible factors affecting the community changes. Biochar amendments caused the soil bacterial communities to become more similar than those in the not amended soils. The bacterial community structures at the phylum and genus levels showed that amendment addition might restore the normal bacterial community of soils, and cause soil bacterial communities in contaminated soils to normalize and stabilize

    Effect of diet and dietary fatty acids on the transformation and incorporation of C18 fatty acids in double-muscled Belgian Blue young bulls

    Three groups of double-muscled Belgian Blue young bulls were fed during different stages of production diets differing in the proportions of linolenic and linoleic acid by including linseed in the concentrate or giving grass silage as main linolenic acid suppliers. Samples of rumen and abomasal contents and of the longissimus thoracis, subcutaneous fat, and liver were taken to analyze the fatty acid pattern with emphasis on the individual trans (t) C18:1 fatty acids and cis-9,trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid (c9t11CLA). Trans C18:1 isomers represented up to 20 g/100 g of total fatty acids in rumen and abomasal contents, whereas the accumulation of c9t11CLA was limited. Total trans C18:1 content in subcutaneous fat and intramuscular fat of the longissimus thoracis comprised 8.4 and 5.2 g/100 g of total fatty acids, respectively, with t11C18:1 being the most abundant one. Compared to rumen contents, subcutaneous and intramuscular fat were enriched in c9t11CLA and contained fewer tC18:1 isomers, resulting in a higher c9t11CLA/t11C18:1 ratio (0.04, 0.22, and 0.22, respectively). This result suggests that the endogenous synthesis of c9t11CLA in adipose tissue by the Delta(9)-desaturase was more important than its ruminal production

    Spin Foam Models of Riemannian Quantum Gravity

    Using numerical calculations, we compare three versions of the Barrett-Crane model of 4-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity. In the version with face and edge amplitudes as described by De Pietri, Freidel, Krasnov, and Rovelli, we show the partition function diverges very rapidly for many triangulated 4-manifolds. In the version with modified face and edge amplitudes due to Perez and Rovelli, we show the partition function converges so rapidly that the sum is dominated by spin foams where all the spins labelling faces are zero except for small, widely separated islands of higher spin. We also describe a new version which appears to have a convergent partition function without drastic spin-zero dominance. Finally, after a general discussion of how to extract physics from spin foam models, we discuss the implications of convergence or divergence of the partition function for other aspects of a spin foam model.Comment: 23 pages LaTeX; this version to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit
