Epicureans distinguish natural desires, which have their origin in the body itself, from empty desires which are imposed by society. Natural desires allow a person to enjoy pleasures free from anxiety and worry. Empty desires such as those for status or luxury are endless and lead to a life of frustration, resentment and anxiety. In this paper I apply this distinction to musical experience and differentiate between the genuine enjoyment of music and musical experience tainted by empty desires

Investigation of Degradation in Polythiophene-Fullerene Based Solar Cells

This dissertation investigates the degradation of conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Specifically, exposure of polymer solutions to air and light, and aging of thin films in air and dark has been probed. Solutions of either P3HT or blend of P3HT and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were mixed in air and light, and also in dark and inert atmosphere. Thin films of these solutions where then spin coated for UV-vis and Raman characterization. Hole only diodes and photovoltaic devices were also realized and characterized for mobility measurements and photovoltaic performance. Characterizations were repeated after aging the thin films in dark and air for two weeks, and then again after a short annealing at elevated temperature. PCBM was found to reduce the magnitude of P3HT degradation. Solutions mixed in dark and argon were found to respond with a reduction of absorption characteristics when annealed. It is not easy to write, with entire impartiality, the history of an institution in which one has been, for any considerable time, a personal actor. The writer has been connected, in various relations, for thirty years with the Michigan State Normal School. He has known pretty intimately all the Principals of the school, and has taught with all these except Principal Welch. With a very few exceptions he has known personally all the teachers who have been connected with the school. Under such conditions it will be difficult to exclude the the personal element from the narrative or from the discussions which now and then occur. An attempt has been made, however, to prevent this element from giving any unfair or unjust coloring to any statements or conclusions in regard to persons, events, or the policy and administration of the school. SEQUENTIAL STOCHASTIC PRODUCTION DECISIONS FOR A PERENNIAL CROP: THE YIELD/QUALITY TRADEOFF FOR ALFALFA HAY

The "optimal cutting schedule" for alfalfa hay is described as a function of the trade-off between rising yield and falling quality of alfalfa over time and the local market prices being offered for different qualities of hay during the harvest season. Field test results quantify the yield/quality tradeoff for a California case study. A general decision rule is then derived to assist growers in making cutting decisions during a season. Finally, the optimal cutting schedule is shown to be the sum of sequential decisions for cuttings throughout the harvest season, with no schedule being best a priori.Crop Production/Industries,

A Critique of Personas as representations of "the other" in Cross-Cultural Technology Design

A literature review on cross-cultural personas reveals both, a trend in projects lacking accomplishment and personas reinforcing previous biases. We first suggest why failures or incompleteness may have ensued, while then we entice a thoughtful alteration of the design process by creating and validating personas together with those that they embody. Personas created in people's own terms support the design of technologies by truly satisfying users' needs and drives. Examining the experiences of those working "out there", and our practises, we conclude persona is a vital designerly artefact to empowering people in representing themselves. A persona-based study on User-Created Persona in Namibia contrasts the current persona status-quo via an ongoing co-design effort with urban and rural non-designers. However we argue persona as a design device must ease its implicit colonial tendency to and impulses in depicting "the other". Instead we endorse serenity, mindfulness and local enabling in design at large and in the African context in particular

10 µm minority-carrier diffusion lengths in Si wires synthesized by Cu-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid growth

The effective electron minority-carrier diffusion length, L_(n,eff), for 2.0 µm diameter Si wires that were synthesized by Cu-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid growth was measured by scanning photocurrent microscopy. In dark, ambient conditions, L_(n,eff) was limited by surface recombination to a value of ≤ 0.7 µm. However, a value of L_(n,eff) = 10.5±1 µm was measured under broad-area illumination in low-level injection. The relatively long minority-carrier diffusion length observed under illumination is consistent with an increased surface passivation resulting from filling of the surface states of the Si wires by photogenerated carriers. These relatively large L_(n,eff) values have important implications for the design of high-efficiency, radial-junction photovoltaic cells from arrays of Si wires synthesized by metal-catalyzed growth processes
