Causal sites as quantum geometry
We propose a structure called a causal site to use as a setting for quantum
geometry, replacing the underlying point set. The structure has an interesting
categorical form, and a natural "tangent 2-bundle," analogous to the tangent
bundle of a smooth manifold. Examples with reasonable finiteness conditions
have an intrinsic geometry, which can approximate classical solutions to
general relativity. We propose an approach to quantization of causal sites as

How to find discrete contact symmetries
This paper describes a new algorithm for determining all discrete contact
symmetries of any differential equation whose Lie contact symmetries are known.
The method is constructive and is easy to use. It is based upon the observation
that the adjoint action of any contact symmetry is an automorphism of the Lie
algebra of generators of Lie contact symmetries. Consequently, all contact
symmetries satisfy various compatibility conditions. These conditions enable
the discrete symmetries to be found systematically, with little effort
Positivity of Spin Foam Amplitudes
The amplitude for a spin foam in the Barrett-Crane model of Riemannian
quantum gravity is given as a product over its vertices, edges and faces, with
one factor of the Riemannian 10j symbols appearing for each vertex, and simpler
factors for the edges and faces. We prove that these amplitudes are always
nonnegative for closed spin foams. As a corollary, all open spin foams going
between a fixed pair of spin networks have real amplitudes of the same sign.
This means one can use the Metropolis algorithm to compute expectation values
of observables in the Riemannian Barrett-Crane model, as in statistical
mechanics, even though this theory is based on a real-time (e^{iS}) rather than
imaginary-time (e^{-S}) path integral. Our proof uses the fact that when the
Riemannian 10j symbols are nonzero, their sign is positive or negative
depending on whether the sum of the ten spins is an integer or half-integer.
For the product of 10j symbols appearing in the amplitude for a closed spin
foam, these signs cancel. We conclude with some numerical evidence suggesting
that the Lorentzian 10j symbols are always nonnegative, which would imply

Spin Foam Models of Riemannian Quantum Gravity
Using numerical calculations, we compare three versions of the Barrett-Crane
model of 4-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity. In the version with face and
edge amplitudes as described by De Pietri, Freidel, Krasnov, and Rovelli, we
show the partition function diverges very rapidly for many triangulated
4-manifolds. In the version with modified face and edge amplitudes due to Perez
and Rovelli, we show the partition function converges so rapidly that the sum
is dominated by spin foams where all the spins labelling faces are zero except
for small, widely separated islands of higher spin. We also describe a new
version which appears to have a convergent partition function without drastic
spin-zero dominance. Finally, after a general discussion of how to extract
physics from spin foam models, we discuss the implications of convergence or

Prevotella copri and microbiota members mediate the beneficial effects of a therapeutic food for malnutrition
Microbiota-directed complementary food (MDCF) formulations have been designed to repair the gut communities of malnourished children. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that one formulation, MDCF-2, improved weight gain in malnourished Bangladeshi children compared to a more calorically dense standard nutritional intervention. Metagenome-assembled genomes from study participants revealed a correlation between ponderal growth and expression of MDCF-2 glycan utilization pathways by Prevotella copri strains. To test this correlation, here we use gnotobiotic mice colonized with defined consortia of age- and ponderal growth-associated gut bacterial strains, with or without P. copri isolates closely matching the metagenome-assembled genomes. Combining gut metagenomics and metatranscriptomics with host single-nucleus RNA sequencing and gut metabolomic analyses, we identify a key role of P. copri in metabolizing MDCF-2 glycans and uncover its interactions with other microbes including Bifidobacterium infantis. P. copri-containing consortia mediated weight gain and modulated energy metabolism within intestinal epithelial cells. Our results reveal structure-function relationships between MDCF-2 and members of the gut microbiota of malnourished children with potential implications for future therapies

Recent Incarceration, Substance Use, Overdose, and Service Use Among People Who Use Drugs in Rural Communities
Importance: Drug use and incarceration have a substantial impact on rural communities, but factors associated with the incarceration of rural people who use drugs (PWUD) have not been thoroughly investigated. Objective: To characterize associations between recent incarceration, overdose, and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment access among rural PWUD. Design, setting, and participants: For this cross-sectional study, the Rural Opioid Initiative research consortium conducted a survey in geographically diverse rural counties with high rates of overdose across 10 US states (Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont) between January 25, 2018, and March 17, 2020, asking PWUD about their substance use, substance use treatment, and interactions with the criminal legal system. Participants were recruited through respondent-driven sampling in 8 rural US regions. Respondents who were willing to recruit additional respondents from their personal networks were enrolled at syringe service programs, community support organizations, and through direct community outreach; these so-called seed respondents then recruited others. Of 3044 respondents, 2935 included participants who resided in rural communities and reported past-30-day injection of any drug or use of opioids nonmedically via any route. Data were analyzed from February 8, 2022, to September 15, 2023. Exposure: Recent incarceration was the exposure of interest, defined as a report of incarceration in jail or prison for at least 1 day in the past 6 months. Main outcomes and measures: The associations between PWUD who were recently incarcerated and main outcomes of treatment use and overdose were examined using logistic regression. Results: Of 2935 participants, 1662 (56.6%) were male, 2496 (85.0%) were White; the mean (SD) age was 36 (10) years; and in the past 30 days, 2507 (85.4%) reported opioid use and 1663 (56.7%) reported injecting drugs daily. A total of 1224 participants (41.7%) reported recent incarceration, with a median (IQR) incarceration of 15 (3-60) days in the past 6 months. Recent incarceration was associated with past-6-month overdose (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.38; 95% CI, 1.12-1.70) and recent SUD treatment (AOR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.36-1.93) but not recent medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD; AOR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.82-1.28) or currently carrying naloxone (AOR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.86-1.21). Conclusions and relevance: In this cross-sectional study of PWUD in rural areas, participants commonly experienced recent incarceration, which was not associated with MOUD, an effective and lifesaving treatment. The criminal legal system should implement effective SUD treatment in rural areas, including MOUD and provision of naloxone, to fully align with evidence-based SUD health care policies.</p

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the effectiveness of interventions to improve depression among HIV-infected adults, but typically have highly selected populations which may limit generalizability. What Consensus? Ideology, Politics and Elections Still Matter
This article, which was prepared for an ABA Antitrust Section Panel, discusses the role of ideology and politics in antitrust enforcement and the impact of elections in the last twenty year on enforcement and policy at the federal antitrust agencies. The article explains the differences in antitrust ideologies and their impact on policy preferences. The article then uses a database of civil non-merger complaints by the DOJ and FTC over the last three Presidential administrations to analyze changes in the number, type and other characteristics of antitrust enforcement. It also discusses change in vertical merger enforcement and other antirust policies such as amicus briefs, reports and guidelines. The article concludes that elections do matter and that the impact of elections on the DOJ and FTC has differed significantly
Team resilience emergence: Perspectives and experiences of military personnel selected for elite military training
We conducted a longitudinal (3-month) qualitative study to examine elite military personnel's (N = 32) experiences and perspectives of team resilience emergence following two team-oriented training courses within an 18-month high-stakes training programme where personnel are required to operate in newly formed tactical teams for extended periods. Our thematically informed interpretations of the participants’ subjective experiences of reality were constructed according to five key themes: (i) adversity is an enduring, shared experience of an event; (ii) individuals recognise adversity through physiological and/or behavioural states; (iii) social resources bind together individual self-regulatory capacities when confronted with adversity to support team functioning; (iv) shared experiences of adversity and collective structures strengthen social bonds and mental models needed for resilience emergence; and (v) behavioural processes and shared states are how collectives turn individual and team capacities into performance under adversity. These findings provide novel insights that supplement our current understanding of team resilience emergence, including the varying means by which adversity may be collectively experienced, synergies between specific forms of adversity and resilience processes or protective factors, and the unique influence of performance context (e.g., task type)
