    Molecular Interactions with Ice: Molecular Embedding, Adsorption, Detection, and Release

    The interaction of atomic and molecular species with water and ice is of fundamental importance for chemistry. In a previous series of publications, we demonstrated that translational energy activates the embedding of Xe and Kr atoms in the near surface region of ice surfaces. In this paper, we show that inert molecular species may be absorbed in a similar fashion.We also revisit Xe embedding, and further probe the nature of the absorption into the selvedge. CF4 molecules with high translational energies (β‰₯3 eV) were observed to embed in amorphous solid water. Just as with Xe, the initial adsorption rate is strongly activated by translational energy, but the CF4 embedding probability is much less than for Xe. In addition, a larger molecule, SF6, did not embed at the same translational energies that both CF4 and Xe embedded. The embedding rate for a given energy thus goes in the order Xe \u3e CF4 \u3e SF6. We do not have as much data for Kr, but it appears to have a rate that is between that of Xe and CF4. Tentatively, this order suggests that for Xe and CF4, which have similar van der Waals radii, the momentum is the key factor in determining whether the incident atom or molecule can penetrate deeply enough below the surface to embed. The more massive SF6 molecule also has a larger van der Waals radius, which appears to prevent it from stably embedding in the selvedge. We also determined that the maximum depth of embedding is less than the equivalent of four layers of hexagonal ice, while some of the atoms just below the ice surface can escape before ice desorption begins. These results show that energetic ballistic embedding in ice is a general phenomenon, and represents a significant new channel by which incident species can be trapped under conditions where they would otherwise not be bound stably as surface adsorbates. These findings have implications for many fields including environmental science, trace gas collection and release, and the chemical composition of astrophysical icy bodies in space

    Microtomography developments on the ANATOMIX beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL

    The new ANATOMIX beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL is dedicated to hard X-ray full-field tomography techniques. Operating in a range of photon energies from approximately 5 to 50 keV, it offers both parallel-beam projection microtomography and nanotomography using a zone-plate transmission X-ray microscope and thus covers a range of spatial resolution from 20 nm to 20 ΞΌ\mum, expressed in terms of useful pixel size.     Inflationary solutions in the brane-world and their geometrical interpretation

    We consider the cosmology of a pair of domain walls bounding a five-dimensional bulk space-time with negative cosmological constant, in which the distance between the branes is not fixed in time. Although there are strong arguments to suggest that this distance should be stabilized in the present epoch, no such constraints exist for the early universe and thus non-static solutions might provide relevant inflationary scenarios. We find the general solution for the standard ansatz where the bulk is foliated by planar-symmetric hypersurfaces. We show that in all cases the bulk geometry is that of anti-de Sitter (AdS_5). We then present a geometrical interpretation for the solutions as embeddings of two de Sitter (dS_4) surfaces in AdS_5, which provide a simple interpretation of the physical properties of the solutions. A notable feature explained in the analysis is that two-way communication between branes expanding away from one another is possible for a finite amount of time, after which communication can proceed in one direction only. The geometrical picture also shows that our class of solutions (and related solutions in the literature) are not completely general, contrary to some claims. We then derive the most general solution for two walls in AdS_5. This includes novel cosmologies where the brane tensions are not constrained to have opposite signs. The construction naturally generalizes to arbitrary FRW cosmologies on the branes.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Case report: Androgen-secreting adrenocortical tumors in eight cats

    Urine marking, aggression, and other behavioral concerns are common reasons for cat owners to seek veterinary care. Empiric treatment for lower urinary tract disease or primary behavior disorders are commonly pursued, especially in those cases with normal routine laboratory evaluations. Herein, we report the clinicopathologic findings in eight sexually altered cats that were diagnosed with androgen-secreting adrenocortical tumors. Nearly all cats (n = 7) initially were evaluated for inappropriate urination and pungent urine, with additional behavioral concerns including aggression (n = 3) and excess vocalization (n = 4) commonly reported. Penile barbs (n = 5) were identified in all five male cats, and an enlarged clitoris was observed in one female cat. Testing of serum androgen concentrations revealed abnormally high androstenedione (n = 1) or testosterone (n = 7) concentrations. In the five cases with available adrenal tissue, histopathologic evaluation identified either an adrenocortical adenoma (n = 3) or adrenocortical carcinoma (n = 2). Hormonal abnormalities resolved and clinical signs improved in the four cats that underwent surgical adrenalectomy, with each of these cats surviving >1 year. However, clinical signs were minimally impacted with medical treatments, including one cat in which trilostane treatment failed to improve clinical signs or testosterone concentrations. This collection of cases underscores the importance of a detailed physical examination as well as the consideration of endocrine disturbances in cats undergoing evaluation for inappropriate urination or aggression. Furthermore, this report adds to the growing body of evidence that sex-hormone secreting adrenal tumors in cats may be an under-recognized syndrome

Published in this context, Ernst Freund's little-known The Legal Nature of Corporations (1897) was an original attempt to come to terms with a new legal and economic reality. But it can also be described, to paraphrase Oliver Wendell Holmes, as the earliest example of the rational study of corporate law. The paper shows that Freund had the intuitions of an institutional economist, and engaged in what today would be called comparative institutional analysis. Remarkably, his argument that the corporate form secures property against insider defection and against outsiders anticipated recent work on entity shielding and capital lock-in, and can be read as an early contribution to what today would be called the theory of the firm.Peer reviewe

    Enzyme classification with peptide programs: a comparative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Efficient and accurate prediction of protein function from sequence is one of the standing problems in Biology. The generalised use of sequence alignments for inferring function promotes the propagation of errors, and there are limits to its applicability. Several machine learning methods have been applied to predict protein function, but they lose much of the information encoded by protein sequences because they need to transform them to obtain data of fixed length.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We have developed a machine learning methodology, called peptide programs (PPs), to deal directly with protein sequences and compared its performance with that of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and BLAST in detailed enzyme classification tasks. Overall, the PPs and SVMs had a similar performance in terms of Matthews Correlation Coefficient, but the PPs had generally a higher precision. BLAST performed globally better than both methodologies, but the PPs had better results than BLAST and SVMs for the smaller datasets.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The higher precision of the PPs in comparison to the SVMs suggests that dealing with sequences is advantageous for detailed protein classification, as precision is essential to avoid annotation errors. The fact that the PPs performed better than BLAST for the smaller datasets demonstrates the potential of the methodology, but the drop in performance observed for the larger datasets indicates that further development is required.</p> <p>Possible strategies to address this issue include partitioning the datasets into smaller subsets and training individual PPs for each subset, or training several PPs for each dataset and combining them using a bagging strategy.</p

    Different Modes of Retrovirus Restriction by Human APOBEC3A and APOBEC3G In Vivo

    The apolipoprotein B editing complex 3 (A3) cytidine deaminases are among the most highly evolutionarily selected retroviral restriction factors, both in terms of gene copy number and sequence diversity. Primate genomes encode seven A3 genes, and while A3F and 3G are widely recognized as important in the restriction of HIV, the role of the other genes, particularly A3A, is not as clear. Indeed, since human cells can express multiple A3 genes, and because of the lack of an experimentally tractable model, it is difficult to dissect the individual contribution of each gene to virus restriction in vivo. To overcome this problem, we generated human A3A and A3G transgenic mice on a mouse A3 knockout background. Using these mice, we demonstrate that both A3A and A3G restrict infection by murine retroviruses but by different mechanisms: A3G was packaged into virions and caused extensive deamination of the retrovirus genomes while A3A was not packaged and instead restricted infection when expressed in target cells. Additionally, we show that a murine leukemia virus engineered to express HIV Vif overcame the A3G-mediated restriction, thereby creating a novel model for studying the interaction between these proteins. We have thus developed an in vivo system for understanding how human A3 proteins use different modes of restriction, as well as a means for testing therapies that disrupt HIV Vif-A3G interactions.United States.     Deaminase-Independent Inhibition of Parvoviruses by the APOBEC3A Cytidine Deaminase

    The APOBEC3 proteins form a multigene family of cytidine deaminases with inhibitory activity against viruses and retrotransposons. In contrast to APOBEC3G (A3G), APOBEC3A (A3A) has no effect on lentiviruses but dramatically inhibits replication of the parvovirus adeno-associated virus (AAV). To study the contribution of deaminase activity to the antiviral activity of A3A, we performed a comprehensive mutational analysis of A3A. By mutation of non-conserved residues, we found that regions outside of the catalytic active site contribute to both deaminase and antiviral activities. Using A3A point mutants and A3A/A3G chimeras, we show that deaminase activity is not required for inhibition of recombinant AAV production. We also found that deaminase-deficient A3A mutants block replication of both wild-type AAV and the autonomous parvovirus minute virus of mice (MVM). In addition, we identify specific residues of A3A that confer activity against AAV when substituted into A3G. In summary, our results demonstrate that deaminase activity is not necessary for the antiviral activity of A3A against parvoviruses
