Teaching Tip: Socio-Cultural Learning to Increase Student Engagement in Introduction to MIS
Introduction to Management Information Systems (MIS) is a challenging course to teach because of the broad expanse of rapidly-changing material, the centrality of the course to the business curriculum, studentsâ demand for interactive teaching rather than traditional lecture, and general student disinterest in or lack of familiarity with the subject. Further compounding these problems, faculty may not be adequately comfortable with or trained in active teaching modalities. To address these challenges, we used principles of socio-cultural learning to design a system of class activities to teach the dynamic concepts commonly found in the Introduction to MIS course. Faculty can adapt and customize this system to suit almost any teaching style without significant preparation. Capitalizing on studentsâ own experiences, we provide ad hoc activities that encourage students to work outside their comfort zone, to communicate and challenge material, to value their own expertise, and to gain confidence working independently. This paper specifically answers the call for more research explaining the âhowâ of teaching rather than the âwhatâ and will prove useful and immediately actionable for novice and seasoned faculty alike

Sex differences in plasma clozapine and norclozapine concentrations in clinical practice and in relation to body mass index and plasma glucose concentrations: a retrospective survey
Background
Clozapine is widely prescribed and, although effective, can cause weight gain and dysglycemia. The dysmetabolic effects of clozapine are thought to be more prevalent in women with this gender on average attaining 17Â % higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men.
Methods
We investigated the relationship between dose, body mass index (BMI), plasma glucose concentration, and plasma clozapine and N-desmethylclozapine (norclozapine) concentrations in 100 individuals with a severe enduring mental illness.
Results
Mean (10th/90th percentile) plasma clozapine concentrations were higher for women [0.49 (0.27â0.79) mg/L] compared with men [0.44 (0.26â0.70) mg/L] (F = 2.2; p = 0.035). There was no significant gender difference in the prescribed clozapine dose. BMI was significantly higher in women [mean (95 % CI) = 34.5 (26.0â45.3)] for females compared with 32.5 (25.2â41.0) for males. Overall, BMI increased by 0.7 kg/m 2 over a mean follow-up period of 210 days. A lower proportion, 41 % of women had a fasting blood glucose â€6.0 mmol/L (<6.0 mmol/L is defined by the International Diabetes Federation as normal glucose handling), compared with 88 % of men (Ï2  = 18.6, p < 0.0001).
Conclusions
We have shown that mean BMI and blood glucose concentrations are higher in women prescribed clozapine than in men. Women also tended to attain higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men. The higher BMI and blood glucose in women may relate to higher tissue exposure to clozapine, as a consequence of sex differences in drug metabolism
Experimental Constraints on the Ferric Fe Content and Oxygen Fugacity in Subducted Serpentinites
Health screening, cardiometabolic disease and adverse health outcomes in individuals with severe mental illness
Background:
Poor physical health in severe mental illness (SMI) remains a major issue for clinical practice.
Aims:
To use electronic health records of routinely collected clinical data to determine levels of screening for cardiometabolic disease and adverse health outcomes in a large sample (n = 7718) of patients with SMI, predominantly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Method:
We linked data from the Glasgow Psychosis Clinical Information System (PsyCIS) to morbidity records, routine blood results and prescribing data.
Results:
There was no record of routine blood monitoring during the preceding 2 years for 16.9% of the cohort. However, monitoring was poorer for male patients, younger patients aged 16â44, those with schizophrenia, and for tests of cholesterol, triglyceride and glycosylated haemoglobin. We estimated that 8.0% of participants had diabetes and that lipids levels, and use of lipid-lowering medication, was generally high.
Conclusions:
Electronic record linkage identified poor health screening and adverse health outcomes in this vulnerable patient group. This approach can inform the design of future interventions and health policy
A level playing âfieldâ? A Bourdieusian analysis of the career aspirations of further education students on sports courses
There is currently a distinct dearth of research into how sports studentsâ career aspirations are formed during their post-compulsory education. This article, based on an ethnographic study of sport students in tertiary education, draws on data collected from two first-year cohorts (n = 34) on two different courses at a further education college in England. The study draws on ethnographic observations, and semi-structured group interviews, to examine in-depth the contrasting occupational perspectives emergent within these two groups of mainly working-class students, and how specific cultural practices affect studentsâ career aspirations. Utilising a Bourdieusian framework, the paper analyses the internalised, often latent cultural practices that impact upon these studentsâ diverse career aspirations. The hitherto under-researched dimension of inter-habitus interaction and also the application of doxa are outlined. The article reveals how the two student cohorts are situated within a complex field of relations, where struggles for legitimisation, academic accomplishment and numerous forms of lucrative capital become habituated. The study offers salient Bourdieusian-inspired insights into the career aspirations of these predominantly working-class students and the ways in which certain educational practices contribute to the production and reproduction of class inequalities
The C4 Clustering Algorithm: Clusters of Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the "C4 Cluster Catalog", a new sample of 748 clusters of galaxies
identified in the spectroscopic sample of the Second Data Release (DR2) of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The C4 cluster--finding algorithm identifies
clusters as overdensities in a seven-dimensional position and color space, thus
minimizing projection effects which plagued previous optical clusters
selection. The present C4 catalog covers ~2600 square degrees of sky with
groups containing 10 members to massive clusters having over 200 cluster
members with redshifts. We provide cluster properties like sky location, mean
redshift, galaxy membership, summed r--band optical luminosity (L_r), velocity
dispersion, and measures of substructure. We use new mock galaxy catalogs to
investigate the sensitivity to the various algorithm parameters, as well as to
quantify purity and completeness. These mock catalogs indicate that the C4
catalog is ~90% complete and 95% pure above M_200 = 1x10^14 solar masses and
within 0.03 <=z <= 0.12. The C4 algorithm finds 98% of X-ray identified
clusters and 90% of Abell clusters within 0.03 <= z <= 0.12. We show that the
L_r of a cluster is a more robust estimator of the halo mass (M_200) than the
line-of-sight velocity dispersion or the richness of the cluster. L_r. The
final SDSS data will provide ~2500 C4 clusters and will represent one of the

Chandra Detection of a TypeII Quasar at z=3.288
We report on observations of a TypeII quasar at redshift z=3.288, identified
as a hard X-ray source in a 185 ks observation with the Chandra X-ray
Observatory and as a high-redshift photometric candidate from deep, multiband
optical imaging. CXOJ084837.9+445352 (hereinafter CXO52) shows an unusually
hard X-ray spectrum from which we infer an absorbing column density N(H) =
(4.8+/-2.1)e23 / cm2 (90% confidence) and an implied unabsorbed 2-10 keV
rest-frame luminosity of L(2-10) = 3.3e44 ergs/s, well within the quasar
regime. Hubble Space Telescope imaging shows CXO52 to be elongated with slight
morphological differences between the WFPC2 F814W and NICMOS F160W bands.
Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of CXO52 show high-ionization emission
lines with velocity widths ~1000 km/s and flux ratios similar to a Seyfert2
galaxy or radio galaxy. The latter are the only class of high-redshift TypeII
luminous AGN which have been extensively studied to date. Unlike radio
galaxies, however, CXO52 is radio quiet, remaining undetected at radio
wavelengths to fairly deep limits, f(4.8GHz) < 40 microJy. High-redshift TypeII
quasars, expected from unification models of active galaxies and long-thought
necessary to explain the X-ray background, are poorly constrained
observationally with few such systems known. We discuss recent observations of
similar TypeII quasars and detail search techniques for such systems: namely
(1) X-ray selection, (2) radio selection, (3) multi-color imaging selection,
and (4) narrow-band imaging selection. Such studies are likely to begin
identifying luminous, high-redshift TypeII systems in large numbers. We discuss
the prospects for these studies and their implications to our understanding of
