mSpace meets EPrints: a Case Study in Creating Dynamic Digital Collections
In this case study we look at issues involved in (a) generating dynamic digital libraries that are on a particular topic but span heterogeneous collections at distinct sites, (b) supplementing the artefacts in that collection with additional information available either from databases at the artefact's home or from the Web at large, and (c) providing an interaction paradigm that will support effective exploration of this new resource. We describe how we used two available frameworks, mSpace and EPrints to support this kind of collection building. The result of the study is a set of recommendations to improve the connectivity of remote resources both to one another and to related Web resources, and that will also reduce problems like co-referencing in order to enable the creation of new collections on demand
Calibration of neural networks using genetic algorithms, with application to optimal path planning
Genetic algorithms (GA) are used to search the synaptic weight space of artificial neural systems (ANS) for weight vectors that optimize some network performance function. GAs do not suffer from some of the architectural constraints involved with other techniques and it is straightforward to incorporate terms into the performance function concerning the metastructure of the ANS. Hence GAs offer a remarkably general approach to calibrating ANS. GAs are applied to the problem of calibrating an ANS that finds optimal paths over a given surface. This problem involves training an ANS on a relatively small set of paths and then examining whether the calibrated ANS is able to find good paths between arbitrary start and end points on the surface
mSpace Mobile: Exploring Support for Mobile Tasks
In the following paper we compare two Web application interfaces, mSpace Mobile and Google Local in supporting location discovery tasks on mobile devices while stationary and while on the move. While mSpace Mobile performed well in both stationary and mobile conditions, performance in Google Local dropped significantly. We postulate that mSpace Mobile performed so well because it breaks the paradigm of the page for delivering Web content, thereby enabling new and more powerful interfaces to be used to support mobility
Modelling the Fluid Mechanics of Cilia and Flagella in Reproduction and Development
Cilia and flagella are actively bending slender organelles, performing
functions such as motility, feeding and embryonic symmetry breaking. We review
the mechanics of viscous-dominated microscale flow, including time-reversal
symmetry, drag anisotropy of slender bodies, and wall effects. We focus on the
fundamental force singularity, higher order multipoles, and the method of
images, providing physical insight and forming a basis for computational
approaches. Two biological problems are then considered in more detail: (1)
left-right symmetry breaking flow in the node, a microscopic structure in
developing vertebrate embryos, and (2) motility of microswimmers through
non-Newtonian fluids. Our model of the embryonic node reveals how particle
transport associated with morphogenesis is modulated by the gradual emergence
of cilium posterior tilt. Our model of swimming makes use of force
distributions within a body-conforming finite element framework, allowing the
solution of nonlinear inertialess Carreau flow. We find that a three-sphere
model swimmer and a model sperm are similarly affected by shear-thinning; in
both cases swimming due to a prescribed beat is enhanced by shear-thinning,
with optimal Deborah number around 0.8. The sperm exhibits an almost perfect
linear relationship between velocity and the logarithm of the ratio of zero to
infinite shear viscosity, with shear-thickening hindering cell progress.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figure
Toughened uni-piece fibrous insulation
A porous body of fibrous, low density silica-based insulation material is at least in part impregnated with a reactive boron oxide containing borosilicate glass frit, a silicon tetraboride fluxing agent and a molybdenum silicide emittance agent. The glass frit, fluxing agent and emittance agent are separately milled to reduce their particle size, then mixed together to produce a slurry in ethanol. The slurry is then applied to the insulation material and sintered to produce the porous body
Marcionās Gospel and the Resurrected Jesus of Canonical Luke 24

New reconstructions of Marcionās Gospel, which are considerably more sophisticated than past attempts, allow more certainty when comparing Marcionās text with canonical Luke. This essay examines the presentations of the resurrected Jesus in canonical Luke and Marcionās Gospel, with a particular focus on the text-critical problems in Lukeā24 (especially the shorter Western readings) and on the distinctive ways the two texts theorize Jesusā risen bodily presence (especially the terms ĻĪ¬Ī½ĻĪ±ĻĪ¼Ī± and ĻĪ½Īµįæ¦Ī¼Ī±, and ĻĪ¬ĻĪ¾ and į½ĻĻĪĪ±). Parallel evidence from the letters of Ignatius indicates that the emphasis on touching Jesus, who has risen in a flesh-and-bones body (as in Lukeā24:36ā43), does not reveal a specifically anti-docetic or anti-Marcionite agenda, but rather was an attempt to restrict apostolic authorization to the Twelve and their successors. These examinations provide suggestive, though admittedly not conclusive, evidence that Marcionās Gospel is the earlier text and canonical Luke the later text, particularly given the problems identifying a coherent editorial agenda on Marcionās part (assuming the priority of canonical Luke)
