Construct validity, dimensionality and factorial invariance of the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale: A bifactor modelling approach among children of prisoners
The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES; Rosenberg, 1989) has traditionally been conceptualised as a unidimensional measure of self-esteem but empirical evidence is equivocal, with some studies supporting a one-factor solution and others favouring multidimensional models. The aim of this study was to examine the factor structure, factorial invariance and composite reliability of the RSES within a European sample of children affected by parental imprisonment (N = 724). The study specified and tested six alternative factor models using conventional confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) techniques and a confirmatory bifactor modelling approach. The RSES was most effectively represented by a bifactor model including a general self-esteem factor comprising of all ten scale items and separate method effects for the positively and negatively phrased items. This model was found to be factorially invariant among boys and girls. Composite reliability indicated good internal consistency for the general self-esteem dimension but slightly less so for the positive and negative methods effects. Results are discussed in terms resolving the debate surrounding the appropriate factor structure and scoring of the RSES
Structured, sparse regression with application to HIV drug resistance
We introduce a new version of forward stepwise regression. Our modification
finds solutions to regression problems where the selected predictors appear in
a structured pattern, with respect to a predefined distance measure over the
candidate predictors. Our method is motivated by the problem of predicting
HIV-1 drug resistance from protein sequences. We find that our method improves
the interpretability of drug resistance while producing comparable predictive
accuracy to standard methods. We also demonstrate our method in a simulation

Analysis of Flexibility Mechanisms for Quota-Catch Balancing in Multispecies Individual Fishing Quotas
Individual fishery quotas (IFQs) are an increasingly prevalent form of fishery management around the world, with more than 170 species currently managed with IFQs. Yet, because of the difficulties in matching quota holdings with catches, many argue that IFQs are not appropriate for multispecies fisheries. Using on-the-ground-experience with multispecies IFQ fisheries in Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, we assess the design and use of catch-quota balancing mechanisms. Our methodology includes a mix of interviews with fishery managers, industry representatives, and brokers; literature review; and data analysis. We find that a combination of incentives and limits on use rates for the mechanisms provide sufficient flexibility to the quota owner without the fishery manager incurring excessive levels of overexploitation risk. Contrary to some opinions, these programs are evidence that it is possible to implement IFQ programs for multispecies fisheries and that they can be profitable and sustainable.natural resources, created markets, tradable permits
Variation in Specificity of HIV Rapid Diagnostic Tests over Place and Time: An Analysis of Discordancy Data Using a Bayesian Approach
BACKGROUND Recent trends to earlier access to anti-retroviral treatment underline the importance of accurate HIV diagnosis. The WHO HIV testing strategy recommends the use of two or three rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) combined in an algorithm and assume a population is serologically stable over time. Yet RDTs are prone to cross reactivity which can lead to false positive or discordant results. This paper uses discordancy data from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) programmes to test the hypothesis that the specificity of RDTs change over place and time. METHODS Data was drawn from all MSF test centres in 2007-8 using a parallel testing algorithm. A Bayesian approach was used to derive estimates of disease prevalence, and of test sensitivity and specificity using the software WinBUGS. A comparison of models with different levels of complexity was performed to assess the evidence for changes in test characteristics by location and over time. RESULTS 106, 035 individuals were included from 51 centres in 10 countries using 7 different RDTs. Discordancy patterns were found to vary by location and time. Model fit statistics confirmed this, with improved fit to the data when test specificity and sensitivity were allowed to vary by centre and over time. Two examples show evidence of variation in specificity between different testing locations within a single country. Finally, within a single test centre, variation in specificity was seen over time with one test becoming more specific and the other less specific. CONCLUSION This analysis demonstrates the variable specificity of multiple HIV RDTs over geographic location and time. This variability suggests that cross reactivity is occurring and indicates a higher than previously appreciated risk of false positive HIV results using the current WHO testing guidelines. Given the significant consequences of false HIV diagnosis, we suggest that current testing and evaluation strategies be reviewed.The authors have no funding or support to report
Asymmetric Dark Matter from a GeV Hidden Sector
Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM) models relate the dark matter density to the
baryon asymmetry, so that a natural mass scale for ADM is around a few GeV. In
existing models of ADM, this mass scale is unexplained; here we generate this
GeV scale for dark matter (DM) from the weak scale via gauge kinetic mixing
with a new Abelian dark force. In addition, this dark sector provides an
efficient mechanism for suppressing the symmetric abundance of DM through
annihilations to the dark photon. We augment this sector with a higher
dimensional operator responsible for communicating the baryon asymmetry to the
dark sector. Our framework also provides DM candidate for gauge mediation
models. It results in a direct detection cross section of interest for current
experiments: sigma less than or similar to 10^{-42} cm^2 for DM masses in the
range 1 - 15 GeV.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Development and validation of a multi-dimensional measure of intellectual humility
This paper presents five studies on the development and validation of a scale of intellectual humility. This scale captures cognitive, affective, behavioral, and motivational components of the construct that have been identified by various philosophers in their conceptual analyses of intellectual humility. We find that intellectual humility has four core dimensions: Open-mindedness (versus Arrogance), Intellectual Modesty (versus Vanity), Corrigibility (versus Fragility), and Engagement (versus Boredom). These dimensions display adequate self-informant agreement, and adequate convergent, divergent, and discriminant validity. In particular, Open-mindedness adds predictive power beyond the Big Six for an objective behavioral measure of intellectual humility, and Intellectual Modesty is uniquely related to Narcissism. We find that a similar factor structure emerges in Germanophone participants, giving initial evidence for the model’s cross-cultural generalizability
Dynamics of Natural Killer cell receptor revealed by quantitative analysis of photoswitchable protein
Natural Killer (NK) cell activation is dynamically regulated by numerous
activating and inhibitory surface receptors that accumulate at the immune
synapse. Quantitative analysis of receptor dynamics has been limited by
methodologies which rely on indirect measurements such as fluorescence recovery
after photobleaching. Here, we report a novel approach to study how proteins
traffic to and from the immune synapse using NK cell receptors tagged with the
photoswitchable fluorescent protein tdEosFP, which can be irreversibly
photoswitched from a green to red fluorescent state by ultraviolet light. Thus,
following a localized switching event, the movement of the photoswitched
molecules can be temporally and spatially resolved by monitoring fluorescence
in two regions of interest. By comparing images with mathematical models, we
evaluated the diffusion coefficient of the receptor KIR2DL1 (0.23 +- 0.06
micron^2/s) and assessed how synapse formation affects receptor dynamics. Our
data conclude that the inhibitory NK cell receptor KIR2DL1 is continually
trafficked into the synapse and remains surprisingly stable there. Unexpectedly
however, in NK cells forming synapses with multiple target cells
simultaneously, KIR2DL1 at one synapse can relocate to another synapse. Thus,
our results reveal a previously undetected inter-synaptic exchange of protein.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

The paper concludes with managerial implications and recommendations for how salespeople might account for gendered aspects of their communications and by so doing potentially increase the effectiveness of their sales process
