    Social Media Use for Farmers Market Communications in Illinois

    Social media has been recognized as a powerful tool supporting communication of many topics in the agriculture industry. We explored the use of social media platforms among farmers market managers and specialty crop growers in Illinois through an online survey. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter were platforms used by the majority of respondents. We found that social media was used primarily for communicating with consumers for marketing purposes. We identified major training needs of farmers market stakeholders related to using social media to promote business and convey food safety information

    Effects of Design Parameters on Performance of Brushless Electrically Excited Synchronous Reluctance Generator

    Permanent magnet synchronous generators, doubly fed induction generators, and traditional electrically excited synchronous generators are widely used for wind power applications, especially large offshore installations. In order to eliminate brushes and slip rings for improved reliability and maintenance-free operation, as well as to avoid costly permanent magnets, a novel brushless electrically excited synchronous reluctance generator having many outstanding advantages has been proposed in this paper. The fundamental operating principles, finite element analysis design studies and performance optimization aspects have been thoroughly investigated by simulations and experimentally under different loading conditions. The effects of different pole combinations and rotor dimensions on the magnetic coupling capacity of this machine have been specifically addressed and fully verified by off-line testing of the 6/2 pole and 8/4 pole prototypes with magnetic barrier reluctance rotor and a new hybrid cage rotor offering superior performance

    Research Progress on the Bioactivity and Mechanisms of Jujube Polysaccharides

    Jujube has a history of being used as both food and herbal medicine in China for thousands of years. Its nutritional value has long been recognized, as it contains various health-promoting bioactive components. Jujube polysaccharides are one of the major bioactive constituents. Extensive studies have shown that jujube polysaccharides exert multiple biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, immune regulatory, anti-fatigue, liver-protective, blood sugar-lowering, and blood lipid-lowering effects, through different or synergistic mechanisms. This article provides an overview of the physicochemical properties and structure-activity relationship of jujube polysaccharides, and summarizes the research progress on the bioactivity and mechanisms of jujube polysaccharides, both domestically and internationally in recent years. Based on these findings, the therapeutic potential of jujube polysaccharides for various diseases is discussed, aiming to provide references for further research and the development of related medicinal treatments involving jujube polysaccharides

    Dietary compounds in modulation of gut microbiota-derived metabolites

    Gut microbiota, a group of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract, plays important roles in health and disease. One mechanism that gut microbiota in modulation of the functions of hosts is achieved through synthesizing and releasing a series of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. In recent years, increasing evidence has indicated that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. On one hand, dietary compounds can modulate the composition and function of gut microbiota; on the other hand, gut microbiota can metabolize the dietary compounds. Although there are several reviews on gut microbiota and diets, there is no focused review on the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites. In this review, we first briefly discussed the types of gut microbiota metabolites, their origins, and the reasons that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. Then, focusing on gut microbiota-derived compounds, we discussed the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived compounds and the following effects on health. Furthermore, we give our perspectives on the research direction of the related research fields. Understanding the roles of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites will expand our knowledge of how diets affect the host health and disease, thus eventually enable the personalized diets and nutrients

    Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities of Wampee (Clausena lansium (Lour.) Skeels) Peel

    Antioxidant activities of wampee peel extracts using five different solvents (ethanol, hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water) were determined by using in-vitro antioxidant models including total antioxidant capability, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and superoxide scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other fractions, even higher than synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). In addition, the EAF exhibited strong anticancer activities against human gastric carcinoma (SGC-7901), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG-2) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549) cancer cell lines, higher than cisplatin, a conventional anticancer drug. The total phenolic content of wampee fraction was positively correlated with the antioxidant activity. This is the first report on the antioxidant and anticancer activities of the wampee peel extract. Thus, wampee peel can be used potentially as a readily accessible source of natural antioxidants and a possible pharmaceutical supplement

    Accumulating evidence suggests that in various systems, not all bidirectional microbiota–host interactions involve direct cell contact. Bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) may be key participants in this interkingdom crosstalk. BEVs mediate microbiota functions by delivering effector molecules that modulate host signaling pathways, thereby facilitating host–microbe interactions. BEV production during infections by both pathogens and probiotics has been observed in various host tissues. Therefore, these vesicles released by microbiota may have the ability to drive or inhibit disease pathogenesis in different systems within the host. Here, we review the current knowledge of BEVs and particularly emphasize their interactions with the host and the pathogenesis of systemic diseases

    Circulating cytokine profile and modulation of regulatory T cells in chronic hepatitis B patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    The risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is higher in patients with diabetes mellitus, and diabetes mellitus is one of the metabolic complications of HBV infection. However, the cytokine profile of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytokine expression profile in CHB patients with T2DM, and to assess the regulatory function of cytokines to regulatory T cells (Tregs). Forty-four T2DM patients, 39 CHB patients, 17 patients with CHB and T2DM, and 21 control subjects were enrolled. Cytokine levels in the plasma were measured by Luminex multiplex assay. CD4+CD25+CD127dim/- Tregs were detected by flow cytometry. Tregs were purified and stimulated with recombinant human interleukin-15 (IL-15). The regulation of IL-15 on Tregs function was investigated by measuring cell number, IL-10/IL-35 secretion, and mRNA expression of immune checkpoint molecules in a Tregs+PBMC co-culture system. We found that levels of IL-1α, IL-6, and IL-33 were upregulated, while IFN-α, IL-2, IL-7, and IL-15 were downregulated in T2DM and CHB patients. CHB patients with T2DM had even lower plasma IL-7 and IL-15 levels. Tregs percentage was elevated in T2DM and CHB patients. CHB patients with T2DM had increased levels of Tregs, which correlated negatively with IL-15. Tregs showed stronger inhibitory activity in CHB patients with T2DM than in controls, T2DM, and CHB patients, which presented as reduction in cellular proliferation and induction of IL-10/IL-35 secretion. IL-15 suppressed Tregs function and inhibited the expression of immune checkpoint molecules in Tregs. The current data suggest that insufficient IL-15 levels and decreased responsiveness of Tregs to IL-15 signaling might contribute to strong immune dysfunction in CHB patients with T2DM
