Organisation conceptuelle du domaine et structure de dictionnaire – L'exemple du commerce de détail – Le présent article a pour objectif de présenter un dictionnaire spécialisé bilingue (anglais-français) original. Il est conçu pour répondre aux besoins des traducteurs et les stratégies lexicographiques mises en oeuvre s'orientent autour de trois axes : richesse des propositions d'équivalent, intention et extension des définitions, explicitation des relations sémantiques (ou internotionnelles). L'article propose une discussion de ces axes en fonction de plusieurs paramètres liés au domaine de spécialité : nature et dynamique de la langue commerciale dans le domaine de la distribution, degré d'avancement de la recherche terminologique dans ce domaine, besoin des traducteurs dans cette spécialité. Les grandes lignes théoriques de l'article s'articulent autour de la mise en évidence des structures de connaissances propres au domaine et de la priorité accordée à la démarche cognitive des traducteurs (qui opèrent en discours plutôt qu'en langue).Conceptual Organisation and Dictionary Structure in Specialized Fields: The Example of Retailing – The aim of this article is to present an original bilingual (English-French) specialized dictionary. Designed to meet the needs of translators, its lexicographic strategies revolve around three elements: richness of equivalents, intension and extension of definitions, clarification of semantic relations. The article discusses these elements focusing on several parameters related to the field of specialization: nature (and dynamics) of the language of retailing, degree of advancement of terminological research, and the needs of translators in this field. Our theoretical proposals highlight the structures of knowledge in the specialized field and give priority to the cognitive process involved in translation (on the level of discourse rather than language)

La représentation des connaissances ; son apport à l’étude du processus de traduction

Cet article fait un survol des études cognitives traitant de l’organisation et de la représentation des connaissances tant pour la lecture que la traduction. Nous postulons que l’enseignement de la traduction vise à amener l’apprenant au niveau de l’expert, que le processus de traduction est perfectible et que la traduction sera améliorée si l’enseignant et l’apprenant ciblent les méthodes et les stratégies inhérentes à la tâche. Parmi les savoir-faire pertinents, nous traitons en fin d’article de la structuration des informations sous forme de carte conceptuelle.This paper is a survey of cognitive studies dealing with the organization and the representation of knowledge in the tasks of both reading and translating, in the field of expertise development. We postulate that the didactics of translation aims to bring the learner to the expert level and that the performance can be improved when methods and strategies are specifically targeted and taught. Among the know-hows pertaining to the task, this paper develops the use of conceptual maps as a means to maximize and structure knowledge and information dealt with in the text

Effet de divers modes de restitution de pailles de mil sur le niveau et la nature du stock organique dans deux sols sableux tropicaux (Sénégal)

A partir d'expérimentations au champ sur sols sableux "Dior" et "Dek", cultivés en mil ou arachide selon divers modes de restitutions des pailles, il est montré que ce sont essentiellement les traitements "mulch" qui conduisent à des augmentations sensibles des stocks organiques des sols et des teneurs en phosphore et soufre totaux. Les résultats obtenus illustrent l'intérêt d'une caractérisation de la matière organique du sol par fractionnement granulométrique en vue de l'étude de la composition et de la gestion de la matière organique du sol dans les agrosystèmes tropicau

eP-ALM: Efficient Perceptual Augmentation of Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) have so far impressed the world, with unprecedented capabilities that emerge in models at large scales. On the vision side, transformer models (i.e., ViT) are following the same trend, achieving the best performance on challenging benchmarks. With the abundance of such unimodal models, a natural question arises; do we need also to follow this trend to tackle multimodal tasks? In this work, we propose to rather direct effort to efficient adaptations of existing models, and propose to augment Language Models with perception. Existing approaches for adapting pretrained models for vision-language tasks still rely on several key components that hinder their efficiency. In particular, they still train a large number of parameters, rely on large multimodal pretraining, use encoders (e.g., CLIP) trained on huge image-text datasets, and add significant inference overhead. In addition, most of these approaches have focused on Zero-Shot and In Context Learning, with little to no effort on direct finetuning. We investigate the minimal computational effort needed to adapt unimodal models for multimodal tasks and propose a new challenging setup, alongside different approaches, that efficiently adapts unimodal pretrained models. We show that by freezing more than 99\% of total parameters, training only one linear projection layer, and prepending only one trainable token, our approach (dubbed eP-ALM) significantly outperforms other baselines on VQA and Captioning across Image, Video, and Audio modalities, following the proposed setup.
