    Early Social-Emotional Functioning and Public Health: The Relationship Between Kindergarten Social Competence and Future Wellness

    A new 20-year study shows a link between children's social skills in kindergarten and their well-being in early adulthood.Researchers from Pennsylvania State and Duke Universities analyzed what happened to nearly 800 kindergarteners from four locations after their teachers measured their social competency skills in 1991. The children were evaluated on a range of social behaviors, such as whether they resolve peer problems, listen to others, share materials, cooperate, and are helpful. Each student then received a composite score representing his or her overall level of positive social skills/behavior, on a scale from ("not at all") to 4 ("very well"). The research team monitored these students and the positive and negative milestones each obtained until they turned 25.Using a variety of data sources, including official records; reports from parents; and self-reporting by the participants, researchers recorded whether the students obtained high school diplomas, college degrees, and full-time jobs. They also kept track of whether students developed a criminal record or substance abuse problems, among other negative outcomes

    Inertia and Overwithholding: Explaining the Prevalence of Income Tax Refunds

    Over three-quarters of US taxpayers receive income tax refunds, indicating tax prepayments above the level of tax liability. This amounts to a zero interest loan to the government. Previous studies have suggested two main explanations for this behavior: precautionary behavior in light of tax uncertainty and/or a forced savings motive. I present evidence on a third explanation: inertia. I find that tax filers only partially adjust tax prepayments in response to changes in default withholdings or tax liability. I use four different settings for identification: (1) a 1992 change in default federal withholding, (2) a panel study of child dependents and tax liability, (3) the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) during the 1990s and (4) a change in default enrollment rules for the Advance EITC option. In the first two cases, I find that individuals offset less than 30% of a change to their expected refund after one year, and about 50% of this shock after three years. Adjustments in tax prepayments by EITC recipients offset no more than 2% of a change in tax liability, though evidence from the Advance EITC indicates that information can significantly increase responses. Given the evidence on inertia, the design of default withholding rules is no longer a neutral decision made by the social planner, but rather, may affect consumption smoothing, particularly for low-income tax filers.

    FraudDroid: Automated Ad Fraud Detection for Android Apps

    Although mobile ad frauds have been widespread, state-of-the-art approaches in the literature have mainly focused on detecting the so-called static placement frauds, where only a single UI state is involved and can be identified based on static information such as the size or location of ad views. Other types of fraud exist that involve multiple UI states and are performed dynamically while users interact with the app. Such dynamic interaction frauds, although now widely spread in apps, have not yet been explored nor addressed in the literature. In this work, we investigate a wide range of mobile ad frauds to provide a comprehensive taxonomy to the research community. We then propose, FraudDroid, a novel hybrid approach to detect ad frauds in mobile Android apps. FraudDroid analyses apps dynamically to build UI state transition graphs and collects their associated runtime network traffics, which are then leveraged to check against a set of heuristic-based rules for identifying ad fraudulent behaviours. We show empirically that FraudDroid detects ad frauds with a high precision (93%) and recall (92%). Experimental results further show that FraudDroid is capable of detecting ad frauds across the spectrum of fraud types. By analysing 12,000 ad-supported Android apps, FraudDroid identified 335 cases of fraud associated with 20 ad networks that are further confirmed to be true positive results and are shared with our fellow researchers to promote advanced ad fraud detectionComment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Confident Predictability: Identifying reliable gene expression patterns for individualized tumor classification using a local minimax kernel algorithm

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Molecular classification of tumors can be achieved by global gene expression profiling. Most machine learning classification algorithms furnish global error rates for the entire population. A few algorithms provide an estimate of probability of malignancy for each queried patient but the degree of accuracy of these estimates is unknown. On the other hand <it>local minimax learning </it>provides such probability estimates with best finite sample bounds on expected mean squared error on an individual basis for each queried patient. This allows a significant percentage of the patients to be identified as <it>confidently predictable</it>, a condition that ensures that the machine learning algorithm possesses an error rate below the tolerable level when applied to the confidently predictable patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We devise a new learning method that implements: (i) feature selection using the k-TSP algorithm and (ii) classifier construction by local minimax kernel learning. We test our method on three publicly available gene expression datasets and achieve significantly lower error rate for a substantial identifiable subset of patients. Our final classifiers are simple to interpret and they can make prediction on an individual basis with an individualized confidence level.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Patients that were predicted confidently by the classifiers as cancer can receive immediate and appropriate treatment whilst patients that were predicted confidently as healthy will be spared from unnecessary treatment. We believe that our method can be a useful tool to translate the gene expression signatures into clinical practice for personalized medicine.</p

    Advancing the Development of the Magneto-Active Slosh Control (MaSC) System for Spacecraft and Launch Vehicles

    The Magneto-Active Propellant Management Device (MAPMD) system is designed to address safety hazards in liquid-propellant spaceflight caused by sloshing. This innovative system of Magneto-Active Slosh Control surpasses traditional passive slosh baffles by reducing mass, improving surface wave suppression, and minimizing volumetric intrusion (Santhanam 2012). In prior fight experiments conducted in collaboration between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Carthage College, remnant slosh suppression was observed, however the effective slosh damping did not meet our expectations due to inadequate control forces. We are redesigning the magnetic membrane with multiple layers of ultrahigh-permeability metallic glass film and are developing an optimized configuration of current-carrying coils to increase magnetic force and field performance. These advancements are expected to elevate the MAPMD system\u27s Technology Readiness Level (TRL) from 3 to 4 in order to pave the way for microgravity flight testing. The MAPMD system promises to enhance the safety and performance of liquid-propellant spaceflight by actively managing slosh dynamics

    Abstract: Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is an essential nutrient that acts as a cofactor for a number of metabolic processes, particularly in energy metabolism. Symptoms of classic thiamine deficiency are recognized as beriberi, although clinical symptoms are nonspecific and recognition of subclinical deficiency is difficult. Therefore, reliable biomarkers of thiamine status are required. Thiamine diphosphate is a cofactor for transketolase, including erythrocyte transketolase (ETK). The ETK activity assay as an indirect, functional marker of thiamine status has been used for over 50 years. The ETK activity assay provides a sensitive and specific biomarker of thiamine status; however, there is a lack of consensus over the cutoffs for deficiency, partly due to a lack of assay harmonization. Here, we provide a step‐by‐step protocol for the measurement of ETK activity and the calculation of the ETK activity coefficient, including detailed explanations of equipment and chemicals required and guidance for quality control procedures. Harmonization of the protocol will provide the basis for the development of internationally recognized cutoffs for thiamine insufficiency. The establishment of quality control materials and a quality assurance scheme are recommended to provide reliability. This will ensure that the ETK activity assay remains an important method for the assessment of thiamine status

    Synergies of Robotic Asteroid Redirection Technologies and Human Space Exploration

    This paper summarizes the results of a 2014 KISS workshop that identified a wide variety of ways that the technologies (and their near-term derivatives) developed for the proposed Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) would beneficially impact the Nation’s space interests including: human missions to Mars and its moons, planetary defense, orbital debris removal, robotic deep-space science missions, commercial communication satellites, and commercial asteroid resource utilization missions. This wide applicability of asteroid retrieval technology is, in many ways, is just as surprising as was the initial finding about the feasibility of ARM. The current Asteroid Redirect Mission concept consists of two major parts: the development of an advanced Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) capability and the retrieval of a near-Earth asteroid. The improvement in SEP technology required by ARM provides an extensible path to support human missions to Mars, is applicable to all planetary defense techniques, could reduce the time required for the LEO-to-GEO transfer of large commercial or military satellites, would enable new deep space robotic science missions, and could enable affordable removal of large orbital debris objects. The asteroid retrieval part of ARM would greatly improve the understanding of the structure of rubble-pile asteroids necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of primary asteroid deflection techniques, demonstrate at least one secondary asteroid deflection technique, greatly accelerate the use of material resources obtained in space to further space exploration and exploitation, and further planetary science
