Task 8 -- Management and reporting. Semi-annual report, April 1--September 30, 1997
The task of addressing the environmental needs of nuclear defense complex sites under the US Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Management (EM) Program requires the timely availability of appropriate cleanup technologies. Fostering the commercialization of these technologies is the mission of EM-50, the EM Program Office of Science and Technology. DOE`s Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC) pursues activities integral to the EM-50 mission through its Cooperative Agreement with the EM Office of Science and Technology (EMCA). The primary objective of Task 8 is to ensure the effectiveness of the EMCA. This is accomplished through (1) the coordination of internal EMCA activities and coordination with the FETC contractor`s representative, (2) the coordination and expansion of the EMCA, and (3) effective technical transfer

Task 10 - technology development integration. Semi-annual report, April 1--September 30, 1996
The Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC), in conjunction with the Waste Policy Institute (WPI), will identify and integrate new technologies to meet site-specific environmental management (EM) requirements at contaminated sites appropriate to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) interests. This paper briefly reports overall progress for three activities: technology management, project management, and technology integration. Work performed over the reporting period has focused on providing logistical and administrative support. In addition, six monthly WPI reports to the EERC are included as appendices. The WPI reports contained detailed information for progress in each activity
Model- and calibration-independent test of cosmic acceleration
We present a calibration-independent test of the accelerated expansion of the
universe using supernova type Ia data. The test is also model-independent in
the sense that no assumptions about the content of the universe or about the
parameterization of the deceleration parameter are made and that it does not
assume any dynamical equations of motion. Yet, the test assumes the universe
and the distribution of supernovae to be statistically homogeneous and
isotropic. A significant reduction of systematic effects, as compared to our
previous, calibration-dependent test, is achieved. Accelerated expansion is
detected at significant level (4.3 sigma in the 2007 Gold sample, 7.2 sigma in
the 2008 Union sample) if the universe is spatially flat. This result depends,
however, crucially on supernovae with a redshift smaller than 0.1, for which
the assumption of statistical isotropy and homogeneity is less well

Observational constraint on dynamical evolution of dark energy
We use the Constitution supernova, the baryon acoustic oscillation, the
cosmic microwave background, and the Hubble parameter data to analyze the
evolution property of dark energy. We obtain different results when we fit
different baryon acoustic oscillation data combined with the Constitution
supernova data to the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder model. We find that the
difference stems from the different values of . We also fit the
observational data to the model independent piecewise constant parametrization.
Four redshift bins with boundaries at , 0.53, 0.85 and 1.8 were chosen
for the piecewise constant parametrization of the equation of state parameter
of dark energy. We find no significant evidence for evolving .
With the addition of the Hubble parameter, the constraint on the equation of
state parameter at high redshift isimproved by 70%. The marginalization of the

Constraints on accelerating universe using ESSENCE and Gold supernovae data combined with other cosmological probes
We use recently observed data: the 192 ESSENCE type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia),
the 182 Gold SNe Ia, the 3-year WMAP, the SDSS baryon acoustic peak, the X-ray
gas mass fraction in clusters and the observational data to constrain
models of the accelerating universe. Combining the 192 ESSENCE data with the
observational data to constrain a parameterized deceleration parameter,
we obtain the best fit values of transition redshift and current deceleration
parameter , .
Furthermore, using CDM model and two model-independent equation of
state of dark energy, we find that the combined constraint from the 192 ESSENCE
data and other four cosmological observations gives smaller values of
and , but a larger value of than the combined
constraint from the 182 Gold data with other four observations. Finally,
according to the Akaike information criterion it is shown that the recently
observed data equally supports three dark energy models: CDM,

Objectives defined for the final two field seasons of the project in 1999 and 2000: to map the archaeology outside the ancient field systems flooring the wadi that have formed the principal focus of the archaeological survey in the previous seasons; to use ethnoarchaeological studies both to reconstruct modern and recent land use and also to yield archaeological signatures of land use to
inform the analysis of the survey data; to complete the survey of ancient field systems and refine understanding of when and how they functioned; to complete the programme of geomorphological and palaeoecological fieldwork, and in particular to refine the chronology of climatic change and human impacts; and to complete the recording and classification of finds
Cosmological scaling solutions in generalised Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories
The conditions for the existence and stability of cosmological power-law
scaling solutions are established when the Einstein-Hilbert action is modified
by the inclusion of a function of the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant. The
general form of the action that leads to such solutions is determined for the
case where the universe is sourced by a barotropic perfect fluid. It is shown
by employing an equivalence between the Gauss-Bonnet action and a scalar-tensor
theory of gravity that the cosmological field equations can be written as a
plane autonomous system. It is found that stable scaling solutions exist when
