    Calibration of Hot-Film X-Probes for High Accuracy Angle Alignment in Wind Tunnels

    This thesis investigates the use of hot-film thermal anemometers to align a plate on a wind tunnel at Hill Air Force Base that is used to calibrate Angle of Attack Transmitters on F-16s. A reoccuring problem with this wind tunnel is that no two instruments can verify an angle reading of the the mounting plate for the Angle of Attack Transmitters to the air stream in the wind tunnel. Multiple thermal anemometer calibration methods, such as Jorgensen’s equation and a look-up table are implemented to attemp to achieve consistent measurements between multiple probes. The results show that it is neccessary to have conditions match between calibration and measurement when attempting to achieve high accuracy with angle measurements

    Femoral Articular Cartilage Quality, but Not Thickness, Is Decreased for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Patients Relative to Control

    Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients are at risk of developing posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). The etiology of posttraumatic knee OA is complex, potentially involving biomechanical and biochemical factors. Changes in femoral cartilage thickness and composition are associated with knee OA, while current research is ambiguous on cartilage in ACLR patients. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare femoral cartilage thickness and T2 relaxation time (a compositional measure) between ACLR patients and healthy controls in a resting state. We hypothesized that ACLR patients would exhibit thinner femoral cartilage and increased T2 relaxation times. METHODS: Twenty ACLR patients (6-24 months post-surgery) and 20 matched healthy controls were recruited following institutional board approval. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging data were collected on two separate days, allowing cartilage thickness and composition measurements to be made, respectively. Statistical analyses, including independent t-tests and Holm-Bonferroni corrections, were performed on selected regions of interest. RESULTS: The ACLR group showed increased T2 relaxation times in four of eight femoral regions compared to controls. No significant differences in femoral cartilage thickness were observed between the groups. The primary finding from this study is that ACLR patients did not show differences in femoral cartilage thickness (a morphological measure), but displayed prolonged T2 relaxation times (a compositional measure) compared to controls, at rest. This finding suggests that compositional changes precede morphological shifts in femoral cartilage in early post-ACLR periods (6-24 months). CONCLUSION: These early compositional changes may indicate articular cartilage that is more compressible and subject to increased strain on the solid components of the joint. While ultrasound is a more accessible imaging method, magnetic resonance imaging may provide a more accurate and early evaluation of cartilage quality. Further research is needed to develop practical tools for early detection and monitoring of cartilage degradation in ACLR patients before progression into knee osteoarthritis

    Effect of particle properties of powders on the generation and transmission of raman scattering

    Transmission Raman measurements of a 1 mm thick sulfur-containing disk were made at different positions as it was moved through 4 mm of aspirin (150-212 mu m) or microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel) of different size ranges (<38, 53-106, and 150-212 mu m). The transmission Raman intensity of the sulfur interlayer at 218 cm(-1) was lower when the disk was placed at the top or bottom of the powder bed, compared to positions within the bed and the difference between the sulfur intensity at the outer and inner positions increased with Avicel particle size. Also, the positional intensity difference was smaller for needle-shaped aspirin than for granular Avicel of the same size. The attenuation coefficients for the propagation of the exciting laser and transmitted Raman photons through the individual powders were the same but decreased as the particle size of Avicel increased; also, the attenuation coefficients for propagation through 150-212 mu m aspirin were almost half of those through similar sized Avicel particles. The study has demonstrated that particulate size and type affect transmitted Raman intensities and, consequently, such factors need to be considered in the analysis of powders, especially if particle properties vary between the samples

    Abstract The Canadian Light Source (CLS) operates two superconducting wigglers (SCW): a 2 Tesla, 63 pole wiggler, and a 4 Tesla, 27 pole wiggler. Both SCWs have a negative impact on the facility&apos;s injection efficiency. Beam based measurements indicate a larger than expected sextupole moment, and the 4T wiggler produces a horizontal tune shift.
