    Is There a Processing Preference for Object Relative Clauses in Chinese? Evidence From ERPs

    A consistent finding across head-initial languages, such as English, is that subject relative clauses (SRCs) are easier to comprehend than object relative clauses (ORCs). However, several studies in Mandarin Chinese, a head-final language, revealed the opposite pattern, which might be modulated by working memory (WM) as suggested by recent results from self-paced reading performance. In the present study, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded when participants with high and low WM spans (measured by forward digit span and operation span tests) read Chinese ORCs and SRCs. The results revealed an N400-P600 complex elicited by ORCs on the relativizer, whose magnitude was modulated by the WM span. On the other hand, a P600 effect was elicited by SRCs on the head noun, whose magnitude was not affected by the WM span. These findings paint a complex picture of relative clause processing in Chinese such that opposing factors involving structural ambiguities and integration of filler-gap dependencies influence processing dynamics in Chinese relative clauses

    Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data

    This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples

    Relative size of numerical magnitude induces a size-contrast effect on the grip scaling of reach-to-grasp movements

    Previous research found that quantitative information labelled on target objects of grasping movement modulates grip apertures. While the interaction between numerical cognition and sensorimotor control may reflect a general representation of magnitude underpinned by the parietal cortex, the nature of this embodied cognitive processing remains unclear. In the present study, we examined whether the numerical effects on grip aperture can be flexibly modulated by the relative magnitude between numbers under a context, which suggests a trial-by-trial comparison mechanism to underlie this effect. The participants performed visual open-loop grasping towards one of two adjacent objects that were of the same physical size but labelled with different Arabic digits. Analysis of participants' grip apertures revealed a numerical size-contrast effect, in which the same numerical label (i.e., 5) led to larger grip apertures when it was accompa nied by a smaller number (i.e., 2) than by a larger number (i.e., 8). The corrected grip aperture over the time course of movement showed that the numerical size-contrast effect remained significant throughout the grasping movement, despite a trend of gradual dissipation. Our findings demonstrated that interactions between number and action critically depend on the size-contrast of magnitude information in the context. Such a size-contrast effect might result from a general system, which is sensitive to relative magnitude, for different quantity domains. Alternatively, the magnitude representations of numbers and action might be processed separately and interact at a later stage of motor programming.9 page(s

    Antisaccade Cost Is Modulated by Contextual Experience of Location Probability

    It is well known that pro- and antisaccades may deploy different cognitive processes. However, the specific reason why antisaccades have longer latencies than prosaccades is still under debate. In three experiments, we studied the factors contributing to the antisaccade cost by taking attentional orienting and target location probabilities into account. In experiment 1, using a new antisaccade paradigm, we directly tested Olk and Kingstone's hypothesis, which attributes longer antisaccade latency to the time it takes to reorient from the visual target to the opposite saccadic target. By eliminating the reorienting component in our paradigm, we found no significant difference between the latencies of the two saccade types. In experiment 2, we varied the proportion of prosaccades made to certain locations and found that latencies in the high location-probability (75%) condition were faster than those in the low location-probability condition. Moreover, antisaccade latencies were significantly longer when location probability was high. This pattern can be explained by the notion of competing pathways for pro- and antisaccades in findings of others. In experiment 3, we further explored the degrees of modulation of location probability by decreasing the magnitude of high probability from 75 to 65%. We again observed a pattern similar to that seen in experiment 2 but with smaller modulation effects. Together, these experiments indicate that the reorienting process is a critical factor in producing the antisaccade cost. Furthermore, the antisaccade cost can be modulated by probabilistic contextual information such as location probabilities
