    An audit on virological efficacy of anti-retroviral therapy in a specialist infectious disease clinic.

    We have assessed the efficacy of anti retroviral therapy (ART) using undetectable viral load (VL) (/ml) as a marker of virological success, in patients who have Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) attending the Department of Infectious Disease. A cross-sectional review of patients\u27 case notes was used to obtain their demographics and treatment details. 79% (253) of the hospital case notes of clinic population was available for analysis, which represents 90% of those receiving ART in the clinic. 166/253 of the cohort were receiving treatment at the time of this study and 95% (157/166) of these were on treatment for greater than 6 months. The total virological success rate is 93%, which is comparable to other centres and are as good as those from published clinical trials. 56% of those on therapy who have virological failure were Intravenous Drug Users (IVDUs). Case by case investigation for those with treatment failure is warranted

    Functional land management: A framework for managing soil-based ecosystem services for the sustainable intensification of agriculture

    peer-reviewedSustainable food production has re-emerged at the top of the global policy agenda, driven by two challenges: (1) the challenge to produce enough food to feed a growing world population and (2) the challenge to make more efficient and prudent use of the world's natural resources. These challenges have led to a societal expectation that the agricultural sector increase productivity, and at the same time provide environmental ‘ecosystem services’ such as the provision of clean water, air, habitats for biodiversity, recycling of nutrients and mitigation against climate change. Whilst the degree to which agriculture can provide individual ecosystem services has been well researched, it is unclear how and to what extent agriculture can meet all expectations relating to environmental sustainability simultaneously, whilst increasing the quantity of food outputs. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework for the quantification of the ‘supply of’ and ‘demand for’ agricultural, soil-based ecosystem services or ‘soil functions’. We use Irish agriculture as a case-study for this framework, using proxy-indicators to determine the demand for individual soil functions, as set by agri-environmental policies, as well as the supply of soil functions, as defined by land use and soil type. We subsequently discuss how this functionality of soils can be managed or incentivised through policy measures, with a view to minimising the divergence between agronomic policies designed to promote increased agricultural production and environmental policy objectives. Finally, we discuss the applicability of this conceptual framework to agriculture and agri-environmental policies at EU level, and the implications for policy makers

    Coastal Management: A guide to using archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, historical and artistic resources

    This ‘Guide’ has been produced as part of the project ‘Archaeology, art and coastal heritage: tools to support coastal management and climate change planning across the Channel Regional Sea’ (Arch-Manche). It details how data sources have been identified, ranked and analysed together to provide evidence of coastal change. Experiences of deploying a range of field investigation techniques to gather scientific data supporting understanding of past coastal change are detailed. The importance of this work in relation to coastal management is presented through a range of results from case studies within areas exhibiting different physical and geomorphological characteristics. The results demonstrate the asyet unrealised potential within archaeological, paleoenvironmental, historical and artistic resources to inform on the scale and pace of coastal change

Publisher Copyright: © 2021, The Author(s).Nickel–iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) platelets with high morphological regularity and submicrometre lateral dimensions were synthesized using a homogeneous precipitation technique for highly efficient catalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Considering edge sites are the point of activity, efforts were made to control platelet size within the synthesized dispersions. The goal is to controllably isolate and characterize size-reduced NiFe LDH particles. Synthetic approaches for size control of NiFe LDH platelets have not been transferable based on published work with other LDH materials and for that reason, we instead use postsynthetic treatment techniques to improve edge-site density. In the end, size-reduced NiFe LDH/single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composites allowed to further reduce the OER overpotential to 237 ± 7 mV ( = 0.16 ± 0.01 μm, 20 wt% SWCNT), which is one of the best values reported to date.     A novel hybrid coagulation-constructed wetland system for the treatment of dairy wastewater

    peer-reviewedConstructed wetlands (CWs) are a cost-effective and sustainable treatment technology that may be used on farms to treat dairy wastewater (DWW). However, CWs require a large area for optimal treatment and have poor long-term phosphorus removal. To overcome these limitations, this study uses a novel, pilot-scale coagulation-sedimentation process prior to loading CWs with DWW. This hybrid system, which was operated on an Irish farm over an entire milking season, performed well at higher hydraulic loading rates than conventional CWs, and obtained removal efficiencies ≥99 % for all measured water quality parameters (chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and phosphorus, total suspended solids and turbidity), which complied with EU directives concerning urban wastewater treatment. Overall, the hybrid coagulation-CW is a promising technology that requires a smaller area than conventional CWs and minimal operator input, and produces high effluent quality
