    Finite element modeling of steel bar buckling in FRP-confined RC columns

    Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confining jackets offer an attractive solution for the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. For an accurate prediction of the strength and ductility of FRP-confined RC columns, it is necessary to understand the interaction between the FRP jacket and the RC column at all deformation levels under seismic loading. In particular, when widely-spaced steel stirrups/spirals are used as the transverse steel reinforcement, the longitudinal steel bars are likely to develop buckling deformations, which are however restrained by the FRP-confined concrete cover. This paper presents a “beam-on-elastic foundation” model for simulating the buckling behavior of longitudinal steel reinforcing bars laterally supported by FRP-confined concrete using the finite element (FE) approach. In addition, a curved beam approximation is proposed to evaluate the stiffness of the lateral springs that are used to represent the restraining effect offered by the FRP-confined concrete cover. The proposed FE model is verified through comparisons between the predicted and the experimental average stress-strain relationships of steel reinforcing bars, the latter of which were obtained from compression tests of FRP-confined RC columns. The proposed FE model provides an effective method for simulating the buckling behavior of laterally supported longitudinal reinforcing bars for a more accurate analysis of the behavior of FRP-confined RC columns

    Identifying online user reputation in terms of user preference

    Identifying online user reputation is significant for online social systems. In this paper, taking into account the preference physics of online user collective behaviors, we present an improved group-based rating method for ranking online user reputation based on the user preference (PGR). All the ratings given by each specific user are mapped to the same rating criteria. By grouping users according to their mapped ratings, the online user reputation is calculated based on the corresponding group sizes. Results for MovieLens and Netflix data sets show that the AUC values of the PGR method can reach 0.9842 (0.9493) and 0.9995 (0.9987) for malicious (random) spammers, respectively, outperforming the results generated by the traditional group- based method, which indicates that the online preference plays an important role for measuring user reputation

    Path cost distribution estimation using trajectory data

    With the growing volumes of vehicle trajectory data, it becomes increasingly possible to capture time-varying and uncertain travel costs in a road network, including travel time and fuel consumption. The current paradigm represents a road network as a weighted graph; it blasts trajectories into small fragments that fit the under-lying edges to assign weights to edges; and it then applies a routing algorithm to the resulting graph. We propose a new paradigm, the hybrid graph , that targets more accurate and more efficient path cost distribution estimation. The new paradigm avoids blasting trajectories into small fragments and instead assigns weights to paths rather than simply to the edges. We show how to compute path weights using trajectory data while taking into account the travel cost dependencies among the edges in the paths. Given a departure time and a query path, we show how to select an optimal set of weights with associated paths that cover the query path and such that the weights enable the most accurate joint cost distribution estimation for the query path. The cost distribution of the query path is then computed accurately using the joint distribution. Finally, we show how the resulting method for computing cost distributions of paths can be integrated into existing routing algorithms. Empirical studies with substantial trajectory data from two different cities offer insight into the design properties of the proposed method and confirm that the method is effective in real-world settings.</jats:p

    Rotective effect of Fengliao-Changweikang extracts, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula,on mucosa in rat with chronic gastritis

    Background: Fengliao-Changwei-Kang(FCK), the Chinese patent drug, is a famous traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula. It has a significant effect on the clinic treatment of gastrointestinal diseases  including gastritis, enteritis and diarrhea for many years. However, there is few research on the  protective effects of FCK on the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis (CG) model rat. Objective: The present study aimed to explore the effects of FCK extract on mucosa in rats with Chronic Gastritis.Materials and Methods: 50 SD mice were randomly divided into 5 groups with 10 in each group(five per sex). The groups are respectively control group, model group, low, middle and high FCK extracts (FCK I, II and III) group. The CG rat model was induced by synthetic methods. FCK I, II and III group were  administrated with FCK extracts at 2.16g• kg, 4.32g• kg, 8.94g• kg once per day for 21 consecutive  days, and the control group and model group were administrated the same volume of distilled water at 10mL/kg once per day. 16 hours after the last administration, the rats were anesthetized and their blood and stomach were drawn from vena cava and abdominal cavity. The serum levels of EGF was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) method, the expression of growth factor receptor (EGFR) in gastric mucosa was detected by immunohistochemical method, and the mRNA expressions of NF-κB p65 was detected in-situ hybridization.Results: The inflammation grades and the expressions of NF-κB p65 mRNA in gastric mucosa of the model group were markedly higher than those of the control group (P&lt;0.05). The inflammation grades of gastric mucosa and the expressions of NF-κB p65 mRNA in gastric mucosa the FCK extract group are significantly lower than those of the model group, and the FCK extract group at 8.64g/kg could greatly increase the serum levels of EGF and the expressions of EGFR in gastric mucosa. High EGF level was found in FCK extract group at 4.32g/kg, but low in FCK extract groups at 2.16g/kg. There were no marked differences among the rats from control group, model group and FCK extract group on ratio of Ll/L2 (P&gt;0.05).Conclusions: FCK extract could alleviate mucosal inflammation by down regulating the expressions of NF-κB p65 mRNA and promote tissue repair by up regulating EGFR expression in gastric mucosa cell.Keywords: chronic gastritis; fengliao-changwei-kang extract; epidermal growth factor receptor; nuclear factor kappa B

    FBG-Based Creep Analysis of GFRP Materials Embedded in Concrete

    This paper presents a typical study regarding the creep interaction behavior between prestressed glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar and concrete when this GFRP bar is subjected to a constant external pullout force. A number of optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were mounted on GFRP bar surface by using an innovative installation method to measure strain distributions. Test results indicate that the complicated interaction at GFRP bar-concrete interface can be evaluated using a transitional factor. Variation trends of this transitional factor indicate three typical zones characterized by different strain/stress variation trends of the GFRP bar when prestress values are sustained at specific levels. These three typical zones include stress release zone, stress transition zone, and continuous tension zone. Test results also suggest that the instant stress loss at the interaction interface between concrete and GFRP bar was quite limited (less than 5%) in present test. Contributed proportion of each GFRP bar section was obtained to represent the creep behavior of the GFRP bar embedded in concrete.     Expression of telomerase inhibits hydroxyl radical-induced apoptosis in normal telomerase negative human lung fibroblasts

    AbstractIn tumor cells telomerase activity is associated with resistance to apoptosis and the introduction of the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) subunit into normal human cells is associated with life span extension of the cells. To determine the role of telomerase in regulating apoptosis, telomerase negative human embryo lung fibroblasts were transfected with the hTERT gene. Unlike the control fibroblasts, the telomerase-expressing cells had elongated telomeres and were resistant to apoptosis induced by hydroxyl radicals. The results indicate that expression of telomerase and, thus, the maintenance of telomere length in normal human somatic cells caused resistance to not only cellular senescence but also apoptosis. Moreover, we found that hydroxyl radical-induced apoptosis in telomerase-expressing and control fibroblasts was caspase-3 independent. These findings have revealed a new type of interrelation between telomerase and caspase-3, which may indicate that in this case the expressed telomerase may inhibit apoptosis at a site not related to the caspase-3 cascade

    The usefulness and utilization of Gold-finger retractor for endoscopic thyroid surgery

    AimsIn endoscopic surgery, the visual field is frequently obstructed by muscles, blood, and even smoke. To overcome this problem, we have developed a new detachable Gold-finger retractor for narrow-space surgery.MethodsGold-finger retractor was used in 30 patients to facilitate surgical field exposure and smoke discharge, while in 27 patients, percutaneous silk thread suspension was employed for the same purpose. Both groups underwent endoscopic unilateral thyroidectomy and unilateral central lymph node dissection via oral vestibular microincision combined with the axillary-assisted approach. A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the Gold-finger retractor and silk thread suspension in relation to intraoperative exposure effect, surgical fluency, surgeon’s comfort, operation time, postoperative complications, and length of hospital stay. This analysis was based on surgical video recordings and postoperative indicators.ResultsWith Gold-finger retractor support, surgeons were able to perform meticulous operations. Complication rates were similar between the two groups, and no serious complications occurred. The number of lymph nodes dissected in the Gold-finger group was significantly greater than that in the routine group (12.43 ± 6.18 and 5.7 ± 2.95, respectively). Further analysis of surgeons’ comfort (visibility and convenience in peeling) revealed that the Gold-finger group was significantly better. Electrosurgery smoke was removed effectively with Gold-finger, and the operation time was significantly reduced.ConclusionIn thyroid surgery, Gold-fingers enhance visual field resolution, avoid muscle cutting, save time, and improve the surgical experience

    Silico-Aluminophosphate and Alkali-Aluminosilicate Geopolymers: A Comparative Review

    Chemically activated materials (often termed as geopolymer) have received attracting attentions in civil, material and environmental research fields as a toolkit alternative to traditional Portland cement in specific applications. This paper presents a comparative review on silico-aluminophosphate (SAP) geopolymers in terms of definition, chemistries involved during geopolymerization, mechanical performance, durability, environmental impacts, and their potentials in applications relative to conventional alkali-aluminosilicate (AAS) geopolymers. Recommendations for future applications are also highlighted. It is found that S-A-P gels with six-coordinated aluminum environment dominate in SAP geopolymers, while the aluminum in N-A-S-H gels formed in the AAS geopolymers is characterized by four-coordinated features. Besides, the slow performance development of SAP geopolymer matrix under ambient temperature curing can be compensated through incorporating additional countermeasures (e.g., metal sources) which allow the tailored design of such geopolymers for certain in-situ applications. Generally, the calcium-bearing C-(A)-S-H gels co-existing with N-A-S-H gels are dominant in AAS geopolymers, while the S-A-P gels enhanced by phosphate-containing crystalline/amorphous phases are the main products in SAP geopolymers. The SAP geopolymers show their environmental friendliness relative to the AAS geopolymers due to the utilization of phosphate activators that require lower production energy relative to silicate-containing activators. However, the higher cost of phosphate activators may confine the applications of SAP geopolymers in some exquisite or special fields
