Spin-polarized transport in a quasi-1D wire with Rashba dots
A numerical study on spin-polarized transport properties in a quasi-one-dimensional wire with Rashba quantum dots is presented. The ballistic spin transmission probability and spin density profiles are obtained using the quantum transmitting boundary method. The Fano-Rashba effect on the spin transmission is analyzed as a function of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength for single dot and double dot systems. The spin density profiles show the localized states that contribute to the backscattering and spin-flip processes in the Rashba dots. The results enlighten us on the Fano-Rashba effect caused by local Rashba spin-orbit coupling and provide concrete ideas for modeling a system with spin-polarized transport for future applications
Enhanced overall efficiency of GaInN-based light-emitting diodes with reduced efficiency droop by Al-composition-graded AlGaN/GaN superlattice electron blocking layer
AlxGa1-xN/GaN superlattice electron blocking layers (EBLs) with gradually decreasing Al composition toward the p-type GaN layer are introduced to GaInN-based high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs). GaInN/GaN multiple quantum well LEDs with 5- and 9-period Al-composition-graded AlxGa1-xN/GaN EBL show comparable operating voltage, higher efficiency as well as less efficiency droop than LEDs having conventional bulk AlGaN EBL, which is attributed to the superlattice doping effect, enhanced hole injection into the active region, and reduced potential drop in the EBL by grading Al compositions. Simulation results reveal a reduction in electron leakage for the superlattice EBL, in agreement with experimental results. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.open1133sciescopu
Determination of Thyroid Volume by Ultrasonography among Schoolchildren in Philippines
Objective. Iodine deficiency is defined by the goiter and the urinary iodine concentration. However, a lack of local thyroid volume reference data resulted in the vague definition of goiter, especially in school-aged children. The aim of this paper was to determine the thyroid volumes by ultrasonography in schoolchildren aged 6 to 12 years living in Cagayan areas in Philippine. Methods. Cross-sectional thyroid ultrasonographic data of 158 schoolchildren aged 6–12 years from Tuguegarao and Lagum in Cagayan valley, Philippine were used. Thyroid volumes were compared based on logistic issue and urban and rural area and compared with other previously reported data. Results. The mean values of thyroid volume in Tuguerago and Lagum were 2.99 ± 1.34 mL and 2.42 ± 0.92 mL. The thyroid size was significantly in association with age (P < 0.00), weight (P < 0.00), height (P < 0.00), and BSA (P < 0.00) by Pearson's correlation. The median thyroid volumes of schoolchildren investigated in this study were generally low compared to international reference data by age group but not by BSA. Conclusions. We propose for the first time local reference ultrasound values for thyroid volumes in 6–12 aged schoolchildren that should be used for monitoring iodine deficiency disorders
Temperature-Dependent Phase Behaviors in Cylinder-Forming Block Copolymers
We demonstrate that the temperature-dependent phase behaviors of parallel and perpendicular cylinder-forming block copolymers are governed by domain-domain segregation forces inherently present in block copolymer material itself. With increasing temperature, a parallel cylinder-forming block copolymer experienced a parallel cylinder straightening process before the order-disorder transition (ODT) and did not show long-range composition fluctuations near the ODT temperature due to the weak segregation forces between the block domains. A perpendicular cylinder-forming block copolymer with a strong segregation force between the block domains displayed cylinder orientation transition from perpendicular to parallel below the ODT temperature. On the other hand, a perpendicular cylinder-forming block copolymer material with an exceptionally strong segregation force between the block domains maintained its initial perpendicular cylinder orientation up to near the ODT temperature. In both cases of perpendicular cylinder-forming block copolymers, submicrometer-scale long-range composition fluctuations were observed well above the ODT temperature due to their intrinsically strong segregation forces between the block domains
Risk factors for post-contrast acute kidney injury in patients sequentially administered iodine- and gadolinium-based contrast media on the same visit to the emergency department: a retrospective study
Background This study compares the incidence of post-contrast acute kidney injury (PC-AKI) in patients who received a single administration of iodine-based contrast medium (ICM) with that in patients who received a sequential administration of ICM and gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) in a single visit to an emergency department (ED) to determine the risk factors for PC-AKI. Methods Patients who received one or more contrast media in the ED from 2016 to 2021 were included in this retrospective study. They were divided into the ICM alone and ICM + GBCA groups, and the incidence of PC-AKI was compared between the groups. The risk factors were assessed using a multivariable analysis after propensity score matching (PSM). Results Overall, 6,318 patients were analyzed, of whom 139 were in the ICM + GBCA group. The incidence of PC-AKI was significantly higher in the ICM + GBCA group than in the ICM alone group (10.9% vs. 27.3%, p < 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, sequential administration was a risk factor for PC-AKI, and single administration was not (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval] in the 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 PSM cohorts: 2.38 [1.25–4.55], 2.13 [1.26–3.60], and 2.28 [1.39–3.72], respectively). In subgroup analyses of the ICM + GBCA group, osmolality (1.05 [1.01–1.10]) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, 0.93 [0.88–0.98]) were associated with PC-AKI. Conclusion Compared with a single administration of ICM alone, sequential administration of ICM and GBCA during a single ED visit might be a risk factor for PC-AKI. Osmolality and eGFR might be associated with PC-AKI after sequential administration
Low-Dose Prasugrel in Patients with Resistance to Clopidogrel for the Treatment of Cerebral Aneurysms
Thromboembolism is one of the major complications of stent assisted coiling in treatment of cerebral aneurysm. Clopidogrel resistance is so common and prasugrel is more effective in its rapid and potent effect. We investigated changes in the value of P2Y12 resistance unit (PRU) when prasugrel was administered to patients with clopidogrel resistance. One hundred mg of aspirin and 75 mg of clopidogrel were administered for 5 days before the procedure, and PRU were examined. The resistance to clopidogrel was defined as the inhibition of PRU was less than 20%. PRU was re-examined after loading 20 mg of prasugrel. We treated 98 consecutive patients between January 2018 and July 2018, and 24 patients (24.5%) had resistance to clopidogrel. Nineteen patients were female. The mean PRU value at admission was 238.5±36.9 and the percentage inhibition value was 4.8±6.3%. After the use of prasugrel, the mean PRU and percentage inhibition values were measured as 124.9±49.9 and 48.0±19.24, respectively. All patients except one patient had a PRU inhibition value as a responder. There was no hemorrhage or thromboembolic complication during mean 1.5 months follow-up after embolization procedure. In conclusion, in patients resistant to clopidogrel, the low dose prasugrel seems to be effective in keeping the percentage inhibition value of PRU within the normal range in treatment of cerebral aneurysm. Further study will be needed to determine the optimal dose of prasugrel to enhance prevention effect of thromboembolism and to reduce hemorrhagic complications during stent assisted coiling
