Fabrication and characterization of the modified ev31-based metal matrix nanocomposites
Metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) with high specific strength have been of interest for numerous researchers. In the current study, Mg matrix nanocomposites reinforced with AlN nanoparticles were produced using the mechanical stirring-assisted casting method. Microstructure, hardness, physical, thermal and electrical properties of the produced composites were characterized in this work. According to the microstructural evaluations, the ceramic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed within the matrix by applying a mechanical stirring. At higher AlN contents, however, some agglomerates were observed as a consequence of a particle-pushing mechanism during the solidification. Microhardness results showed a slight improvement in the mechanical strength of the nanocomposites following the addition of AlN nanoparticles. Interestingly, nanocomposite samples were featured with higher electrical and thermal conductivities, which can be attributed to the structural effect of nanoparticles within the matrix. Moreover, thermal expansion analysis of the nanocomposites indicated that the presence of nanoparticles lowered the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) in the case of nanocomposites. All in all, this combination of properties, including high mechanical strength, thermal and electrical conductivity, together with low CTE, make these new nanocomposites very promising materials for electro packaging applications
Identification of intracellular bacteria from multiple single-cell RNA-seq platforms using CSI-Microbes
The study of the tumor microbiome has been garnering increased attention. We developed a computational pipeline (CSI-Microbes) for identifying microbial reads from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data and for analyzing differential abundance of taxa. Using a series of controlled experiments and analyses, we performed the first systematic evaluation of the efficacy of recovering microbial unique molecular identifiers by multiple scRNA-seq technologies, which identified the newer 10x chemistries (3' v3 and 5') as the best suited approach. We analyzed patient esophageal and colorectal carcinomas and found that reads from distinct genera tend to co-occur in the same host cells, testifying to possible intracellular polymicrobial interactions. Microbial reads are disproportionately abundant within myeloid cells that up-regulate proinflammatory cytokines like IL1Β and CXCL8, while infected tumor cells up-regulate antigen processing and presentation pathways. These results show that myeloid cells with bacteria engulfed are a major source of bacterial RNA within the tumor microenvironment (TME) and may inflame the TME and influence immunotherapy response
The currency ratio in Tanzania: an econometric analysis
This study tested some key hypotheses on the determinants
of the currency ratio in Tanzania. The econometric results suggest that real income is, as theorized, negatively related to and a significant determinant of the currency ratio in Tanzania. The estimated income elasticity coefficient, found to be far less than unity, suggests there is poor substitution between currency and demand deposits in Tanzania. The results also showed that expected inflation was negatively related to the currency ratio in Tanzania. While the structural adjustment programme was found to increase and shift upward the currency ratio function in Tanzania, the liberalization of the financial sector was found to shift decrease and shift downward the currency ratio function. Most institutional variables were
found to lack the expected sign and significance in explaining the currency ratio in Tanzania, probably because of inadequacy of the proxies used
Dopaminergic D1 receptor signalling is necessary, but not sufficient for cued fear memory destabilisation
Rationale. Pharmacological targeting of memory reconsolidation is a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of fear memory-related disorders. However, the success of reconsolidation-based approaches depends upon the effective destabilisation of the fear memory by memory reactivation. Objectives. Here, we aimed to determine the functional involvement of dopamine D1 receptors in cued fear memory destabilisation, using systemic drug administration. Results. We observed that direct D1 receptor agonism was not sufficient to stimulate tone fear memory destabilisation to facilitate reconsolidation disruption by the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist mifepristone. Instead, administration of the nootropic nefiracetam did facilitate mifepristone-induced amnesia, in a manner that was dependent upon dopamine D1 receptor activation, although. Finally, while the combined treatment with nefiracetam and mifepristone did not confer fear-reducing effects under conditions of extinction learning, there was some evidence that mifepristone reduces fear expression irrespective of memory reactivation parameters. Conclusions. The use of combination pharmacological treatment to stimulate memory destabilisation and impair reconsolidation has potential therapeutic benefits, without risking a maladaptive increase of fear
Baseline characteristics of patients in the reduction of events with darbepoetin alfa in heart failure trial (RED-HF)
<p>Aims: This report describes the baseline characteristics of patients in the Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF) which is testing the hypothesis that anaemia correction with darbepoetin alfa will reduce the composite endpoint of death from any cause or hospital admission for worsening heart failure, and improve other outcomes.</p>
<p>Methods and results: Key demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings, along with baseline treatment, are reported and compared with those of patients in other recent clinical trials in heart failure. Compared with other recent trials, RED-HF enrolled more elderly [mean age 70 (SD 11.4) years], female (41%), and black (9%) patients. RED-HF patients more often had diabetes (46%) and renal impairment (72% had an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). Patients in RED-HF had heart failure of longer duration [5.3 (5.4) years], worse NYHA class (35% II, 63% III, and 2% IV), and more signs of congestion. Mean EF was 30% (6.8%). RED-HF patients were well treated at randomization, and pharmacological therapy at baseline was broadly similar to that of other recent trials, taking account of study-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria. Median (interquartile range) haemoglobin at baseline was 112 (106–117) g/L.</p>
<p>Conclusion: The anaemic patients enrolled in RED-HF were older, moderately to markedly symptomatic, and had extensive co-morbidity.</p>
A review of the positive and negative effects of cardiovascular drugs on sexual function: a proposed table for use in clinical practice
Several antihypertensive drugs, such as diuretics and β-blockers, can negatively affect sexual function, leading to diminished quality of life and often to noncompliance with the therapy. Other drug classes, however, such as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are able to improve patients’ sexual function. Sufficient knowledge about the effects of these widely used antihypertensive drugs will make it possible for cardiologists and general practitioners to spare and even improve patients’ sexual health by switching to different classes of cardiac medication. Nevertheless, previous data (part I) indicate that most cardiologists lack knowledge about the effects cardiovascular agents can have on sexual function and will thus not be able to provide the necessary holistic patient care with regard to prescribing these drugs. To be able to improve healthcare on this point, we aimed to provide a practical overview, for use by cardiologists as well as other healthcare professionals, dealing with sexual dysfunction in their clinical practices. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was performed. Development of novel alsi10mg based nanocomposites: Microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties
Al matrix nanocomposites are interestingly employed in the automotive, military, aerospace and electronics packaging industries. In this study, Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced AlSi10Mg nanocomposites were produced via powder metallurgy. The effect of GNPs content on density, microstructure and mechanical characteristics of the AlSi10Mg/GNPs nanocomposites was investigated systematically. To this aim, AlSi10Mg/GNPs nanocomposites reinforced with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt.% of GNPs were produced by wet mixing method following by hot compaction at 600 ◦C. To evaluate the effect of GNPs on mechanical properties of the as-fabricated nanocomposite, Vickers hardness and tensile properties of composites analyzed at room temperature. According to the results, it was found that the fabrication of AlSi10Mg/GNPs nanocomposites is faced with several challenges such as agglomeration and non-uniform dispersion of GNPs that should be addressed to achieve the desirable thermal and mechanical properties. For instance, surprisingly, it is revealed that the mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposites were deteriorated in the presence of a high quantity of GNPs (>1.0 wt.%), which can be attributed to the GNPs agglomeration and accordingly introduction of internal porosity in the nanocomposite. The relatively low fraction of GNPs can uniformly be dispersed in the matrix and improve the performance of the nanocomposite
