Oceanographic research in Delagoa Bay area: a progress report
Oceanographic research carried out in the Delagoa Bay (Mozambique) area in January 1982 confirms the presence of a cyclonic eddy influencing a total area of approximately 150 km x 80 km between the Mozambique Current and the 200 m isobaths. The bottom topography seems to play a major role in the generation of the eddy. Comparison with results of investigations carried out in the area from 1957 to 1980 suggests that the eddy is quasi-stationary
Water masses and circulation of the Mozambique Channel
From 1977 to 1980, several research cruises were carried out in the coastal waters of Mozambique to collect oceanographic data. The distribution of hydrographic and bathythermograph stations is given. The water masses and circulation were mapped and wind data gathered
A report on a survey with the r/v "Ernst Haeckel" in July-August 1980: shallow-water shrimp and by-catch, oceanography
A survey of the Sofala Bank (Mozambique) was conducted to: estimate the abundance of shallow-water shrimp in the area between 16 degree 20'S and 20 degree 20'S, from 5 to 100 meters; estimate the shallow-water shrimp species composition and distribution pattern of main species. Collect biological data of the main species, Penaeus indicus and Metapenaeus monoceros; study the shrimp by-catch, species composition and biological data collection of the most abundant species of commercial value; and collect environmental data to clarify the shelf circulation on the Sofala Bank and the main oceanic features in the regions 15 degree S to 18 degree S and south of 22 degree S
Report on the oceanographic investigations carried out at the Sofala Bank by the Soviet trawler "Sevastopolsky rybak" in September-December 1982
In September-December 1982 a fisheries research cruise was carried out at the Sofala Bank by the SRTM "Sevastopolsky Rybak". Oceanographic investigations have been conducted in association with the fisheries research. Three coverages were made of the Sofala Bank each lasting for slightly less than three weeks. This will allow for three descriptions of the oceanographic conditions in the area, with some reference being made to variability. This paper is just a preliminary report of those investigations
Generation and propagation of epileptiform activity in the hippocampal slice preparation
For the investigation of epileptiform events in the hippo-campal CA1 field, in-vitro slices of the guinea-pig were used. After adding 0.1 mmol 4-aminopyridine to the bathing medium, field potentials were recorded with an electrode array, consisting of 8 semi-microelectrodes at spacings of 0.1 ram. A comparison was made between the spontaneously occurring field potentials (SFP) in CA I and those evoked by different inputs to the CA1 pyramidal cells, namely alveus, str. oriens and Schaffer collaterals. For this purpose the electrode array was placed in CA l, parallel to the axes for the pyramidal cells. The regularly occurring SEP's presented a similar distribution as the potentials evoked by stimulation of str. oriens or alveus of CAI, but differed from those evoked by stimulation of the chaffer colaterals. This indicates that in CA1 SFP's are generated in a similar way as field potentials evoked by alveus or str. oriens stimulation. It was also found that SFP's are propagated from CA3 and CAI at a velocity of 0.16-0.30 m/sec. Therefore pathways in alveus and str. oriens, connecting CA3 and CA1, may be important in propagating epileptiform activity. This was supported by experiments in which different pathways were sectioned
On the equivalence of the self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models coupled to Fermions
We study the exact equivalence between the self-dual model minimally coupled
with a Dirac field and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model with non-minimal magnetic
coupling to fermions. We show that the fermion sectors of the models are
equivalent only if a Thirring like interaction is included. Using functional
methods we verify that, up to renormalizations, the equivalence persists at the
quantum level.Comment: 8 pages, revte
Effects of Abiotic Factors on Phenolic Compounds in the Grape Berry – A Review
Grape berry phenolic compounds are widely described in literature. Phenolics can be divided into two main groups: flavonoids and non-flavonoids, of which the flavonoids are the most important. The two bestknown groups of flavonoids are the anthocyanins and condensed tannins (also called proanthocyanidins). Anthocyanins are responsible for the red colour in grapes. The condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) are responsible for some major wine sensorial properties (astringency, browning, and turbidity) and areinvolved in the wine ageing processes. This review summarises flavonoid synthesis in the grape berry and the impact of environmental factors on the accumulation rate during ripening of each of the flavonoids. The impact of the accumulated flavonoids in grapes and the resulting impact on the sensorial aspects of the wine are also discussed
Controlling Factors Determining The Selective Hscn Addition To Double Bonds And Their Application To The Synthesis Of 7-isothiocyano-7,8-α-dihydro-bisabolene
The reactivity of terminal and trisubstituted double bonds of monoterpenes with HSCN has been examined by GC giving evidence that kinetics is responsible for the chemoselective addition to terminal double bonds in terpenes. The results show that the addition to the terminal double bond is about 17 times faster than for trisubstituted double bonds and that the presence of the first SCN group in the molecule prevents a second addition. The presence of a hydroxyl or methoxy group in the molecule, decreases the reaction kinetics. Based on these kinetic experiments a two steps synthesis of the natural product 7-isothiocyano-7,8-dihydro-α-bisabolene using bisabolol as starting material, was planned and successfully accomplished.125661666Drobnica, L., KristĂan, P., AugustĂn, J., The Chemistry of the Cyanates and Their Thio Derivatives, , Saul Patai Ed., John Wiley & Sons, New YorkEdenborough, M.S., Herbert, R.B., (1988) Nat. Freezing in random graph ferromagnets
Using T=0 Monte Carlo and simulated annealing simulation, we study the energy
relaxation of ferromagnetic Ising and Potts models on random graphs. In
addition to the expected exponential decay to a zero energy ground state, a
range of connectivities for which there is power law relaxation and freezing to
a metastable state is found. For some connectivities this freezing persists
even using simulated annealing to find the ground state. The freezing is caused
by dynamic frustration in the graphs, and is a feature of the local
search-nature of the Monte Carlo dynamics used. The implications of the
freezing on agent-based complex systems models are briefly considered.Comment: Published version: 1 reference deleted, 1 word added. 4 pages, 5
