Drystone walls in the Algarve, Portugal. Characterization and interconnection with the geology and lithology
Drystone walls can be frequently observed along the Algarve, south region of
Portugal, performing both support and property division. This region is also known by its
geological diversity and, consequently, lithology, which are intimately related to the orography.
The combination of all these factors allowed the proliferation of this traditional drystone walls
during the last centuries, and they represent not only an important element of the landscape, but
also a perspective of the social, economic and technical bases of Algarve’s heritage. This article
intends to present this diversity and the relationship between its various facets. In order to
achieve the objectives, several field surveys were carried out to different geological zones, with
the intention of gathering information related to the natural material used and its construction
technique, as well as interaction with local inhabitants. These visits were supported by
bibliographic and “Web-graphic” research, to substantiate the hypotheses. Based on the data
results it is possible to identify a close interconnection between the geology and wall structure
typology, since they are made with the natural rock fragments (raw material) found nearby.
However, its function is more related to the orogeny and lithology, the latter defining also the
type of agricultural culture. The study is enriched by the enormous diversity of rock types,
although the Algarve is a relatively small region. The main limitations found during the
development of the study are related to the physical access to the walls and the interviews with
the locals. These constrictions were due to the lack of land maintenance, allowing vegetation to
growth naturally, invading and covering the walls, and also due to the pandemic situation brought
by the COVID-19 virus, which interdict the interaction between persons and also the travels.
Despite the restrictions mentioned, the fieldtrips gave enough data to support the correlation
between the geology, lithology and the raw material used on the drystone walls, as well as their
relation to the terraces that proliferate in specific areas of Algarve. In view of the scarcity of
bibliographic elements associated with this subject, in the studied territory, the elaboration of
documents that allow the identification, characterization, geo-location and dissemination of the
object of study, is considered as an asset for this theme. Finally, the study aims to alert and
counter the tendency to abandon this type of heritage, valuing it and making it known.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
espectro objectivo do EC8 (solo tipo A).

Selection process of sustainable indicators for the Algarve Region—OBSERVE Project
The selection of indicators for the Observatory of Sustainability of the Algarve Region for Tourism (OBSERVE), poses challenges, namely which indicators are relevant to stakeholders and how to assure that information is available. To support the selection of the environmental, sociocultural, economic and institutional indicators, an engagement process was designed and applied, which included meetings with stakeholders, a workshop and an online survey. The results showed that both workshop and online surveys reflected, in general, similar opinions, thus allowing the selecting of the sustainable development indicators for the Algarve region. Additionally, the results showed that nearly 75% of the indicators can be obtained from national statistics and, therefore, can be used on the OBSERVE project, assuring a quick flow of information. As limitations, it is important to mention that the other 25% will need further development, in order to provide data for indicators, like carbon management and client satisfaction. With this approach, the observatory will survey and evaluate the sustainable development of the region (status and trends), based on indicators that answer to the strategic needs of system's main users, with social and economic implications, i.e., public institutions, economic agents, tourists, local communities and residents.ALG-01-0246-FEDER-027503info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Resilience of water supply systems – case study of Quinta do Lago
On the South of Portugal, namely in Quinta do Lago – Algarve the water consumption pattern changes from winter to summer, mainly due to the seasonality of touristic occupation and irrigation of green areas.
In Quinta do Lago many plots have boreholes to extract groundwater for irrigation, however in summer, when the irrigation demand has its peak, the groundwater table lowers and it is observed saline intrusion into the aquifer. The increased concentration of salts in groundwater also increases the water demand for irrigation as the soil lixiviation must be attended. This phenomenon forces the owners to irrigate the private green areas with fresh water from the water supply system. In the last years, the number of plots irrigated with fresh water has increased and the current trend may cause the failure of the water supply system.
In the present study the hydraulic and operational performance of the water supply system of Quinta do Lago is assessed, considering the increase on water demand for the irrigation of the private green areas.
The used methodology is based on the hydraulic modelling of the water supply system and evaluation of performance indicators using penalty functions.
From the analysis it is pointed out that undertaking appropriate operational modes, the water supply system may be resilient to the increase in water demand and investment in new infrastructure to attend this phenomenon may not be required.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Sustainable competitiveness of tourism in the Algarve region. Critical stakeholders’ perception of the supply sector
The Algarve region, located in the south of Portugal, is a well-known tourism destination that seeks to be sustainable and competitive. The local administration looks to establish a collaborative network, where stakeholders take a crucial role. The research aims to appeal to the accommodations and food services stakeholders to have a shared vision of the issues and priorities related to sustainable tourism development. Their perception is a critical factor in making decisions regarding the region’s competitiveness. Algarve’s two major and leading associations of the tourism supply sector AIHSA and AHETA were invited to participate in the study. Based on the responses of an online questionnaire, an artificial intelligence algorithm was applied to the data to identify the common and divergent aspects. The conceptual model developed is based on a simplified model of psychological ownership. The results highlight a convergent perspective regarding sustainability challenges, namely, natural resources and biodiversity, safety, and supply chain. However, hotels and restaurants do not reflect the same perception regarding sustainability initiatives, e-tourism, or free internet access. These divergences are essential results since they indicated which issues require local authorities’ priority intervention.Operational Program CRESC ALGARVE 2020 (ALG-01-0246-FEDER-027503)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
No entanto, o aumento
