    Variance-constrained filtering for uncertain stochastic systems with missing measurements

The parameter uncertainties are allowed to be norm-bounded and enter into the state matrix. The system measurements may be unavailable (i.e., missing data) at any sample time, and the probability of the occurrence of missing data is assumed to be known. The purpose of this problem is to design a linear filter such that, for all admissible parameter uncertainties and all possible incomplete observations, the error state of the filtering process is mean square bounded, and the steady-state variance of the estimation error of each state is not more than the individual prescribed upper bound. It is shown that, the addressed filtering problem can effectively be solved in terms of the solutions of a couple of algebraic Riccati-like inequalities or linear matrix inequalities. The explicit expression of the desired robust filters is parameterized, and an illustrative numerical example is provided to demonstrate the usefulness and flexibility of the proposed design approach

Because of the limited bandwidth of the channels, such random packet losses could occur, simultaneously, in the communication channels from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator. The random packet loss is assumed to obey the Bernoulli random binary distribution, and the parameter uncertainties are norm-bounded and enter into both the system and output matrices. In the presence of random packet losses, an observer-based feedback controller is designed to robustly exponentially stabilize the networked system in the sense of mean square and also achieve the prescribed Hinfin disturbance-rejection-attenuation level. Both the stability-analysis and controller-synthesis problems are thoroughly investigated. It is shown that the controller-design problem under consideration is solvable if certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are feasible. A simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed LMI approach

The gene regulatory network is viewed as a stochastic dynamic model, which consists of the noisy gene measurement from microarray and the gene regulation first-order autoregressive (AR) stochastic dynamic process. By using the EM algorithm, both the model parameters and the actual values of the gene expression levels can be identified simultaneously. Moreover, the algorithm can deal with the sparse parameter identification and the noisy data in an efficient way. It is also shown that the EM algorithm can handle the microarray gene expression data with large number of variables but a small number of observations. The gene expression stochastic dynamic models for four real-world gene expression data sets are constructed to demonstrate the advantages of the introduced algorithm. Several indices are proposed to evaluate the models of inferred gene regulatory networks, and the relevant biological properties are discussed

    Competition at silent synapses in reinnervated skeletal muscle

    Synaptic connections are made and broken in an activity-dependent manner in diverse regions of the nervous system. However, whether activity is strictly necessary for synapse elimination has not been resolved directly. Here we report that synaptic terminals occupying motor endplates made electrically silent by tetrodotoxin and alpha-bungarotoxin block were frequently displaced by regenerating axons that were also both inactive and synaptically ineffective. Thus, neither evoked nor spontaneous activation of acetylcholine receptors is required for competitive reoccupation of neuromuscular synaptic sites by regenerating motor axons

The missing measurements are described by a binary switching sequence satisfying a conditional probability distribution. We aim to design filters such that, for all possible missing observations and all admissible parameter uncertainties, the filtering error system is exponentially mean-square stable, and the prescribed H/sub /spl infin// performance constraint is met. In terms of certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), sufficient conditions for the solvability of the addressed problem are obtained. When these LMIs are feasible, an explicit expression of a desired robust H/sub /spl infin// filter is also given. An optimization problem is subsequently formulated by optimizing the H/sub /spl infin// filtering performances. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed design approach

To prepare the biodegradable nanofibrous membranes, poly(D,L)-lactide-co-glycolide and the antibiotics were first dissolved in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol. They were electrospun into biodegradable drug-eluting membranes, which were then enveloped on the surface of stainless plates. An elution method and a high-performance liquid chromatography assay were employed to characterize the in vivo and in vitro release rates of the antibiotics from the nanofiber-enveloped plates. The results showed that the biodegradable nanofiber-enveloped plates released high concentrations of vancomycin and ceftazidime (well above the minimum inhibitory concentration) for more than 3 and 8 weeks in vitro and in vivo, respectively. A bacterial inhibition test was carried out to determine the relative activity of the released antibiotics. The bioactivity ranged from 25% to 100%. In addition, the serum creatinine level remained within the normal range, suggesting that the high vancomycin concentration did not affect renal function. By adopting the electrospinning technique, we will be able to manufacture biodegradable drug-eluting implants for the long-term drug delivery of different antibiotics.
