Mid-term review : sustainable management of Algerien steppes; a participatory learning approach / la gestion durable des parcours steppiques; la voie de l'apprentissage participatif
Though only at its mid-term, the project has been successful in policy influence, securing funding which for the first time will be used for forest and pastoral plantations on farmers’ land, without expropriating them, and thus assuring joint responsibility for proper management. New models put forward by the project combine preservation measures with intensive irrigated fodder production, and development of complementary income-generating activities involving olive and fruit-tree plantations. The project has designed effective new models for steppe management, with a high probability of being taken up by the Algerian government as well as replicated in other zones in the country
Urban agriculture as a climate change and disaster risk reduction strategy
Urban and peri-urban agriculture is considered as a strategy that can bring multiple benefits and help to build resilient urban food systems at the city region level. Cities have an important role to play in climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk management and in enhancing the climate resilience of their vulnerable residents. Major emitters of greenhouse gas (GHG), cities are not only contributing to climate change, but are also directly and indirectly impacted by it. Acute or chronic climate change is threatening access to basic urban services such as water, energy and food for growing populations. Key issues include rising temperatures, increasing rainfall, flooding and urban food insecurity. Rapid urban growth will only increase the number of highly vulnerable urban communities, with the urban poor being most at risk. Only with a coordinated approach and action at the global, regional, national and local levels can the climate change emergency be curbed, and its effects mitigated
Regional training course on action - research and management of urban agriculture : final technical report, Mar. 2001 - Nov. 2002
The "Cities Feeding People Programme" of the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC- Canada) collaborated with the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Urban Management Programme (UMP-LAC/UN-Habitat; Ecuador) and IPES-Promotion of Sustainable Development (Peru) in the development and implementation of the first Regional Training Course on Urban Agriculture (UA). The project was originally planned for a 15 months period, from March 2001 till June 2002. In June, a project extension of six months was granted for further elaboration of the “raw” training materials produced during the course with the objective to facilitate the development of future (distance learning) courses.
The course, organised in the month of November 2001, allowed 12 “city-pairs” (formed by one representative of the local or federal government and 1 representative of the civil society), representing in total 11 cities of 8 different countries in the Region, to discuss and evaluate together proposals for action-research and concrete intervention in Urban Agriculture.
Through a series of 7 modules and pedagogic packages, different themes and methodologies were discussed to work out participatory strategies of research and intervention that support development of Urban Agriculture and its inclusion in urban planning and management. The general content of the course included case studies of projects, programs and policies on Urban Agriculture, research methodologies and worked on project and policy formulation in a city case study.
The training course provided a series of “raw” written and visual training materials that were organised and edited into a series of training aids. The aids include a written repository of thematic texts and concepts in form of a Course Binder, and that will incorporate the whole set of written and visual materials used in the LAC training course in form of a Training Kit. These materials will serve as reference material for training course participants and provide to future trainers the educational support to facilitate the reproduction of other (distance learning) Urban Agriculture Training Course
From seed to table programme (FSTT) : final technical report (activities realised in 2010-2011 and results obtained 2009-2011)
Annexes not includedThe RUAF Foundation is an international network of Resource Centres on Urban Agriculture and Food security; The RUAF-FStT programme builds on the RUAF-Cities Farming for the Future (CFF) programme. The capacities of the regional RUAF partners have been substantially enhanced over the project period, especially in value chain analysis, business planning and financing, organization of Urban Producer Field Schools, organizational strengthening and policy lobbying and advocacy for financing of urban agriculture, as well as for urban agriculture policy development at provincial and national levels. This report provides a synthesis of activities implemented and results achieved under the RUAF “From Seed to Table (FStT)” programme
