    Squark-mediated Higgs+jets production at the LHC

    We investigate possible scenarios of light-squark production at the LHC as a new mechanism to produce Higgs bosons in association with jets. The study is motivated by the SUSY search for H+jets events, performed by the CMS collaboration on 8 and 13 TeV data using the razor variables. Two simplified models are proposed to interpret the observations in this search. The constraint from Run I and the implications for Run II and beyond are discussed

    The politicization of immigration in Portugal between 1995 and 2014: a European exception?

    Immigration is envisaged as part of an ‘emergent cultural cleavage’ across Western Europe. Within this context, this article explores the politicization of immigration in Portugal between 1995 and 2014. Politicization is interpreted as being formed by two distinct dimensions: salience and polarization of the political claims found within news articles extracted from newspapers. Notwithstanding the doubling of the foreign population settled in the country in the early 2000s, the diminished salience and the absence of significant political conflict suggest that immigration failed to become politicized in Portugal. Drawing on a comparative analysis with seven other European states between 1995 and 2009, Portugal observed the lowest rate of politicization. Rather than being related with socio‐economic factors, the lack of politicization of immigration was associated with the strategies of the mainstream parties, which successfully prevented the emergence of this topic as a significant political cleavage.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Improving the Knowledge on Seismogenic Sources in the Lower Tagus Valley for Seismic Hazard Purposes

    The Lower Tagus Valley, that includes the metropolitan area of Lisbon, has been struck by several earthquakes which produced significant material damage and loss of lives. Their exact location remains unknown. Our goal is to shed some light into the seismogenic sources in the area using seismic reflection and geological data. In areas with no seismic coverage, potential-field data interpretation was carried out. Seismicity was overlaid to the potential seismogenic structures and high-resolution data was acquired in order to confirm which structures have been active into the Quaternary. Three major fault-zones affecting the Neogene were identified: V. F. Xira, Samora-Alcochete and Pinhal Novo. For the first fault, strong evidences suggest it is active. The other two fault-zones and other structures previously unknown can be correlated with several epicentres. Empirical relationships between maximum moment magnitude and fault area indicate that MW > 6.5 earthquakes can be expected for the larger structures

    Aperture-free star formation rate of SDSS star-forming galaxies

    Large area surveys with a high number of galaxies observed have undoubtedly marked a milestone in the understanding of several properties of galaxies, such as star-formation history, morphology, and metallicity. However, in many cases, these surveys provide fluxes from fixed small apertures (e.g. fibre), which cover a scant fraction of the galaxy, compelling us to use aperture corrections to study the global properties of galaxies. In this work, we derive the current total star formation rate (SFR) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) star-forming galaxies, using an empirically based aperture correction of the measured Hα\rm H\alpha flux for the first time, thus minimising the uncertainties associated with reduced apertures. All the Hα\rm H\alpha fluxes have been extinction-corrected using the Hα/Hβ\rm H\alpha/H\beta ratio free from aperture effects. The total SFR for \sim210,000 SDSS star-forming galaxies has been derived applying pure empirical Hα\rm H\alpha and Hα/Hβ\rm H\alpha/H\beta aperture corrections based on the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. We find that, on average, the aperture-corrected SFR is \sim0.65dex higher than the SDSS fibre-based SFR. The relation between the SFR and stellar mass for SDSS star-forming galaxies (SFR--M\rm M_\star) has been obtained, together with its dependence on extinction and Hα\rm H\alpha equivalent width. We compare our results with those obtained in previous works and examine the behaviour of the derived SFR in six redshift bins, over the redshift range 0.005z0.22\rm 0.005 \leq z\leq 0.22. The SFR--M\rm M_\star sequence derived here is in agreement with selected observational studies based on integral field spectroscopy of individual galaxies as well as with the predictions of recent theoretical models of disc galaxies

    O milho é um dos grãos que dominam o mercado agrícola no mundo, juntamente com o arroz, o trigo e a soja. Representa a maior quantidade produzida, é também o cereal que tem registrado maiores incrementos de produção nos últimos anos e um dos produtos mais tradicionais da agricultura mineira. Em Minas Gerais, observa-se que o crescimento da produção de milho decorre principalmente do aumento do rendimento das lavouras e que esse crescimento não vem ocorrendo de maneira uniforme nas diferentes regiões de planejamento do Estado. Uma avaliação do desenvolvimento da cultura do milho nas regiões de planejamento é apresentada, assim como a visão das perspectivas futuras para esse cereal, em Minas Gerais
