Behavioral Ecology of an Invasive Species: Habitat and Mate Preference(s) in Drosophila Suzukii

    Get PDF
The invasive Spotted-Wing fruit fly, Drosophila suzukii, has inflicted substantial economic losses to the soft-fruit agriculture industry worldwide due to the ability of females in this species to use a large, serrated ovipositor to cut the fruit’s skin and lay eggs directly into the mesocarp of ripening fruit. Once the eggs hatch, larvae consume the fruit flesh, ultimately leaving the fruit unmarketable. This species parasitizes numerous commercial fruit types (including blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and occasionally grapes) as well as fruits from a variety of wild plant species. Since fruit types vary in their nutritional composition, as well as their spatial and temporal availability, this suggests that D. suzukii experiences considerable environmental heterogeneity. The environment can have a large influence on the development and evolution of morphological, physiological, and behavioural phenotypes and, thus, can have significant implications for individual variation and population growth and change over time. Thus to better understand success if this invasive species we have examined the behavioural and developmental and reproductive performance of D. suzukii as it relates to their local environment. Specifically we focused on the role of the nutritional developmental history (NDH), which can either hinder or support offspring growth and survival, and may be an important factor when selecting habitats. Secondly, as the juvenile NDH has the potential to greatly influence adult phenotypes, and consequently individual reproductive potential, we also examined if NDH influenced the operation of sexual selection. Here we report evidence that NDH is an important factor for D. suzukii females when choosing oviposition sites, and can have dramatic consequences for offspring development, mate-choice, offspring fitness, and ultimately population growth. Information on these two subject areas (habitat and mate choice) is of great potential importance to bettering future management strategies (e.g. by manipulating fly numbers based on host preference and reproductive strategies), which are currently limited by lack of knowledge on the biology of this species

Force, Statecraft and German Unity: The Struggle to Adapt Institutions and Practices

One can make two general observations concerning Bonn\u27s ongoing attempt to adapt institutions and practices. First, confusion in German policy making is clearly a manifestation of officials largely navigating in a little-known policy milieu. Realpolitik, let alone Machtpolitik (either as mere terms, let alone as concepts) are neither freely used in polite political discord in Germany, nor widely contemplated. As a result of a wide-spread political culture governed by self-restraint, confronting difficult issues in their proper context has made decision making frequently complicated and confusing to outside observers. What we are presently witnessing is a learning period in German external policy making, with all of its attendant errors. It is an open question how long this educational process will last or if the German body politic is prepared for such straight forward discussion. Second, perturbations in policy formation are partly a result of Bonn\u27s approach to foreign and security policies which remains exclusively defined and expressed by the German government in the context of the North Atlantic Alliance and the emerging European Security and Defense Identity. Indeed, there is no sizeable political bloc in the Federal Republic that argues otherwise. In consequence, there is no evidence that Bonn is prepared to consider adopting a national approach to national security. In sum, German statecraft has the unenviable task of legitimizing its new national status, not only before its allies and neighbors, but also before a skeptical German public. Given the history of statecraft in a unified Germany, this will surely be a difficult and potentially time- consuming process. To the Federal Republic\u27s credit, one must recall that, unlike previous historical experiences, contemporary German democratic traditions and institutions are universally accepted in Germany, and they have been tested.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1868/thumbnail.jp

South Korea s President Park Chung-hee was still a controversial figure in Korean history He was a man who achieved the economic miracle of South Korea while adopting repressive measures to suspend the democracy and human Korea The nostalgia of Park s era also remains Park receives fairly good evaluations from the world American newspapers at the death of Park Chung-hee provided the objective views on Park Chung-hee Throughout the newspapers editorials Park was the man who brought the economic miracle of South Korea and a good ally for the U S at the time of Cold War On the other hand he was another dictator who enjoyed autocratic rule under the U S protection The American views provide the foundation to evaluate Park Chung-hee of toda

French Policy Toward NATO: Enhanced Selectivity, Vice Rapprochement

The authors of this report explain how French policy toward NATO has changed since 1992. Importantly, they discuss how these changes have been effected. However, certain key elements of French external policy have not changed. In effect, therefore, the authors argue that while France may wish to cooperate with NATO, this does not imply that there will be a more cooperative French attitude toward the Alliance.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1890/thumbnail.jp

Screening For Maternal Postpartum Depression In The Pediatric Primary Care Setting: An Educational Project

    Get PDF
Abstract The birth of a baby can bring about an array of powerful emotions that range from joy and excitement to feelings of anxiety, worry, and depression. A majority of mothers experience postpartum baby blues which normally begins 2-3 days after delivery and can last for up to 2-3 weeks, but some mothers experience a more severe form known as postpartum depression (PPD). PPD can be mistaken for baby blues at first, but the signs and symptoms do not diminish and can continue to worsen. Postpartum depression signs and symptoms include withdrawing from friends and family, severe mood swings, excessive crying, increased or decreased appetite, loss of interest or pleasure in doing things, and difficulty bonding or making a connection with the newborn (Mayo Clinic, 2022). PPD can also lead to suicidal ideation as well as thoughts of harming the infant. If left untreated, this can increase the baby’s risk for developmental delays and impaired social development. Given the effects that PPD can have on the mother and infant, it is vital that this diagnosis is caught and treated early, but unfortunately there are women who miss their postpartum follow-up appointment with their obstetrician. The American Academy of Pediatrics recognized this gap in missed diagnoses and recommended that pediatric providers screen for maternal PPD at the 1, 2, 4, and 6- month well-child visits (Morehead, 2020). The two project sites do not follow this recommendation, so an educational PowerPoint focusing on the epidemiology of PPD, validated screening tools, and the significance of PPD was presented to the pediatric providers and data from the pre-test and post-test survey were analyzed. Although not statistically significant, the educational intervention had an impact on their knowledge relating to postpartum depression
