Neotenic Representations in Gerald Durrell’s Works

    Get PDF
Neoteny refers to a set of infant-like characteristics which, if present in even adult non-human animals, are found endearing by humans and activates nurturing responses in them. These features are large eyes, short limbs, a  large head compared to the body, upright posture and a generally rounded configuration etc. Konrad Lorenz calls these features collectively as ‘child schema.’ In culture industries, toy and doll-makers, as well as cartoon film-makers, exploit this tendency of their consumers to increase their sales by representing animals neotenically. It is a process of deliberate juvenilization.  Though a form of anthropocentric representation, Gerald  Durrell has shown in his works how neoteny can be used ecocentrically to change human attitudes towards neglected and so-called  ‘ugly’  creatures.  Combined often with anthropomorphism, neoteny becomes a  potent tool in  Durrell’s hands to fight anthropocentrism and promote ecocentrism

    Ancient India and Inclusive Education

    Get PDF
Ancient India thus remains a flexible and still fully unexplored terrain that cannot be simplistically branded as rigid and casteist or apathetic to women when it comes to equality in education and inclusion in society. Again various evidence shows that it would be wrong to assume that ancient Indic traditions were outright supporter of women’s education and holistic inclusion. The culture in ancient India and the evolving trends were volatile and chequered and calls for more intensive and extensive studies. This paper aims at exploring the ambiguous developments related to the education of the so called lower castes and how the age old theory of a rigid caste system and rigid norms against inclusion of women in India, that gave rise to social exclusion is practically not absolute and remains a grey zone to be brought under the scanner. In fact this paper attempts to bring to the forefront the instances that reveal that ancient India was more inclusive in philosophy and practice than its western counterparts

Investigating Employee Green Behavior through Perceived Organizational Support for the Environment in the Hotel Industry: A Moderated-Mediation Analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose - This study investigates the role of perceived organizational support for the environment (POS-E) on employee green behavior (EGB). It also examines the mediating role of employee environmental commitment (EEC) and green work climate (GWC), as well as the moderating role of employee green awareness. Method - Data were collected from 247 hotel employees located at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh applying convenient sampling. Data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique and SPSS. Results - Findings reveal that POS-E positively influences EGB while EEC and GWC fully mediate the association between POS-E and EGB. Findings also show that POS-E on EEC and GWC is more significant when employees have greater ecological awareness. Implications - The findings imply that the hospitality firms’ ecological POS can improve employee green behavior. Empayees’ ecological awareness also plays an important role in such behavior. Originality – The study contributes to the existing literature in the context of the hospitality industry by filling up the gap in exploring the mechanism through which POS influences employee behavior

An application of design of experiments approach to statistically model and optimize performance parameters of a single cylinder four-stroke diesel engine

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the application of design of experiments to enhance the performance characteristics such as indicated thermal power and mechanical efficiency of a four-stroke diesel engine with single cylinder. The dependent response variables are examined by varying the independent variables namely engine speed from 1421 to 1435 rpm, load from 18 to 28 kg and fuel flow rate from 2.5 to 3 kg/h. The influence of the input parameters and their interactions on the response functions are quantified using mathematical models. Statistical analysis comprising of analysis of variance, residuals, Pareto and normal probability are used for validating the models and obtaining relevant parameters. Engine load is proved to be the most significant factor influencing the indicated thermal power while fuel flow rate considerably impacts the mechanical efficiency. The optimum settings of the input variables are determined to be engine speed of 1435 rpm, load 28 kg and fuel flow rate 2.5 kg/h. The indicated thermal power is maximized to 27.3025 kW whereas mechanical efficiency have been increased to 80.0775 percent with the optimum settings

Exploration of the Portrayal of Yudhishthir in Select Revisionist Texts

    Get PDF
Several revisionist writers in today’s time are projecting characters from our great epics, The Ramayana and The Mahabharatato bring out the various nuances in their personalities from a contemporary context. Yudhishthir is one of the most eminent and righteous characters in the Mahabharata. His representation is quite different from the ordinary kshatriya man. Popular for his righteous nature, he is the only one who reaches heaven with his body as only souls are permitted to enter in the heaven. Yudhishthir was the combination of the qualities of God and human. This paper looks into the complex strains in his character as portrayed in some of the select texts by revisionist writers like Pratibha Ray in Yajnaseni, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni in The Palace of Illusions, M. Veerappa Moily in The Flaming Tresses of Draupadi, Kavita Kane in Karna’s Wife, Devdutt Pattanaik in Jaya and Thakur K.B.P. Sinha in Draupadi: The Abandoned Queen

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to explore cultural control systems in the context of New Public Management (NPM) initiatives in Australia. A Government Department in the Australian Capital Territory was selected for the investigation. The selected department has adopted NPM initiatives in recent years and demonstrates considerable improvements in performance. This study used qualitative research methods. In this study, data collection involved a triangulation approach and the data sources were organizational documents, interviews and observations. As cultural control systems are socially constructed, Giddens’ structuration theory was adopted in this research to obtain a better understanding of human actions and to explore how these control devices are implicated in the wider social context. The research confirmed that implementation of cultural control systems in the selected organization is the functions of NPM in the key areas of human resources management like code of conduct, duty statement, communication and consultation, workplace diversity, group rewards and recognition etc. These findings are consistent with the view that changes to the Australian public sector promoted a culture of performance. Keywords: Cultural Control Systems, Public Sector Reforms, New Public Management (NPM), Australian Public Sector, Structuration Theory
