(#Nematoda : #Mermithidae) est décrit provenant de trois espèces de coléoptères suceurs de sève, #Carpophilus lugubris Murray, #C. antiquus Melsh et #Colopterus truncatus (Randall) (#Coleoptera : #Nitidulidae), récoltées dans le Comté de Mason, Illinois, Etats-Unis d'Amérique. Ce Mermithide diffère des autres espèces du genre par la forme des amphides et leur type d'association avec les glandes amphidiales, la longueur et la forme des #vagina vera et #vagina uterina. Une clé des espèces du genre #Psammomermisestproposeˊeetladiagnoseenestamendeˊe.LeMermithidepeutprovoquerjusquaˋ80 est proposée et la diagnose en est amendée. Le Mermithide peut provoquer jusqu'à 80% d'infestation et de mort chez le coléoptère suceur de sève #C. lugubris, un vecteur important de champignons mycotoxigènes.     Geostatistical modelling of a coal seam for resource risk assessment

    The evaluation of a coal seam for profitable extraction requires the estimation of its thickness and quality characteristics together with the spatial variability of these variables. In many cases the only data available for the estimation are from a limited number of exploration and feasibility drill holes. Spatial variability can be quantified by geostatistical modelling, which provides the basis for estimation (kriging). In cases where the spatial variability of the seam thickness and quality characteristics has a significant impact on how the coal is extracted and stored, geostatistical simulation may be preferable to geostatistical kriging methods. The aim of this paper is to present an improved approach to resource risk assessment by propagating the uncertainty in semi-variogram model parameters into the spatial variability of coal variables. We show that a more realistic assessment of risk is obtained when the uncertainty of semi-variogram model parameters is taken into account.     Trajectories of self-rated health in people with diabetes: Associations with functioning in a prospective community sample

Relatively little is known about changes and the trajectories of SRH in people with chronic medical conditions. The aims of the present study were to identify and describe longitudinal trajectories of self-rated health (SRH) status in people with diabetes. Methods: A prospective community study was carried out between 2008 and 2011. SRH was assessed at baseline and yearly at follow-ups (n=1288). Analysis was carried out through trajectory modeling. The trajectory groups were subsequently compared at 4 years follow-up with respect to functioning. Results: Four distinct trajectories of SRH were identified: 1) 72.2% of the participants were assigned to a persistently good SRH trajectory; 2) 10.1% were assigned to a persistently poor SRH trajectory; 3) mean SRH scores changed from good to poor for one group (7.3%); while 4) mean SRH scores changed from poor to medium/good for another group (10.4%). Those with a persistently poor perception of health status were at higher risk for poor functioning at 4 years follow-up than those whose SRH scores decreased from good to poor. Conclusions: SRH is an important predictor for poor functioning in diabetes, but the trajectory of SRH seems to be even more important.     Development of the preterm gut microbiome in twins at risk of necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis

    The preterm gut microbiome is a complex dynamic community influenced by genetic and environmental factors and is implicated in the pathogenesis of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and sepsis. We aimed to explore the longitudinal development of the gut microbiome in preterm twins to determine how shared environmental and genetic factors may influence temporal changes and compared this to the expressed breast milk (EBM) microbiome. Stool samples (n = 173) from 27 infants (12 twin pairs and 1 triplet set) and EBM (n = 18) from 4 mothers were collected longitudinally. All samples underwent PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) analysis and a selected subset underwent 454 pyrosequencing. Stool and EBM shared a core microbiome dominated by Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcaceae, and Staphylococcaceae. The gut microbiome showed greater similarity between siblings compared to unrelated individuals. Pyrosequencing revealed a reduction in diversity and increasing dominance of Escherichia sp. preceding NEC that was not observed in the healthy twin. Antibiotic treatment had a substantial effect on the gut microbiome, reducing Escherichia sp. and increasing other Enterobacteriaceae. This study demonstrates related preterm twins share similar gut microbiome development, even within the complex environment of neonatal intensive care. This is likely a result of shared genetic and immunomodulatory factors as well as exposure to the same maternal microbiome during birth, skin contact and exposure to EBM. Environmental factors including antibiotic exposure and feeding are additional significant determinants of community structure, regardless of host genetics

    Prediction of photoperiodic regulators from quantitative gene circuit models

    Photoperiod sensors allow physiological adaptation to the changing seasons. The external coincidence hypothesis postulates that a light-responsive regulator is modulated by a circadian rhythm. Sufficient data are available to test this quantitatively in plants, though not yet in animals. In Arabidopsis, the clock-regulated genes CONSTANS (CO) and FLAVIN, KELCH, F-BOX (FKF1) and their lightsensitive proteins are thought to form an external coincidence sensor. We use 40 timeseries of molecular data to model the integration of light and timing information by CO, its target gene FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), and the circadian clock. Among other predictions, the models show that FKF1 activates FT. We demonstrate experimentally that this effect is independent of the known activation of CO by FKF1, thus we locate a major, novel controller of photoperiodism. External coincidence is part of a complex photoperiod sensor: modelling makes this complexity explicit and may thus contribute to crop improvement

    Observation of exotic meson production in the reaction πpηπp \pi^{-} p \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^- p at 18 GeV/c

    An amplitude analysis of an exclusive sample of 5765 events from the reaction πpηπp\pi^{-} p \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^- p at 18 GeV/c is described. The ηπ\eta^{\prime} \pi^- production is dominated by natural parity exchange and by three partial waves: those with JPC=1+,2++,J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, 2^{++}, and 4++4^{++}. A mass-dependent analysis of the partial-wave amplitudes indicates the production of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) meson as well as the a4(2040)a_4(2040) meson, observed for the first time decaying to ηπ\eta^{\prime}\pi^-. The dominant, exotic (non-qqˉ)q\bar{q}) 1+1^{-+} partial wave is shown to be resonant with a mass of 1.597±0.0100.010+0.0451.597 \pm 0.010^{+0.045}_{-0.010} GeV/c^2 and a width of 0.340±0.040±0.0500.340 \pm 0.040 \pm 0.050 GeV/c^2 . This exotic state, the π1(1600)\pi_1(1600), is produced with a tt dependence which is different from that of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) meson, indicating differences between the production mechanisms for the two states.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figure

    Microcarrier-Based Expansion of Adult Murine Side Population Stem Cells

    The lack of reliable methods to efficiently isolate and propagate stem cell populations is a significant obstacle to the advancement of cell-based therapies for human diseases. One isolation technique is based on efflux of the fluorophore Hoechst 33342. Using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), a sub-population containing adult stem cells has been identified in a multitude of tissues in every mammalian species examined. These rare cells are referred to as the ‘side population’ or SP due to a distinctive FACS profile that results from weak staining by Hoechst dye. Although the SP contains multi-potent cells capable of differentiating toward hematopoietic and mesenchymal lineages; there is currently no method to efficiently expand them. Here, we describe a spinner-flask culture system containing C2C12 myoblasts attached to spherical microcarriers that act to support the growth of non-adherent, post-natal murine skeletal muscle and bone marrow SP cells. Using FACS and hemocytometry, we show expansion of unfractionated EGFP+ SP cells over 6 wks. A significant number of these cells retain characteristics of freshly-isolated, unfractionated SP cells with respect to protein expression and dye efflux capacity. Expansion of the SP will permit further study of these heterogeneous cells and determine their therapeutic potential for regenerative and reparative therapies

    Partial-wave analysis of the eta pi+ pi- system produced in the reaction pi-p --> eta pi+ pi- n at 18 GeV/c

    A partial-wave analysis of 9082 eta pi+ pi- n events produced in the reaction pi- p --> eta pi+ pi- n at 18.3 GeV/c has been carried out using data from experiment 852 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are dominated by J^{PC} = 0^{-+} partial waves consistent with observation of the eta(1295) and the eta(1440). The mass and width of the eta(1295) were determined to be 1282 +- 5 MeV and 66 +- 13 Mev respectively while the eta(1440) was observed with a mass of 1404 +- 6 MeV and width of 80 +- 21 MeV. Other partial waves of importance include the 1++ and the 1+- waves. Results of the partial wave analysis are combined with results of other experiments to estimate f1(1285) branching fractions. These values are considerably different from current values determined without the aid of amplitude analyses.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
