The Evaluation and Treatment of Male Infertility

A CAJM article on the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility in the 1950's health delivery system. As the perpetuation of the species is primarily dependent upon its reproductive ability it is no wonder that the problem of sterile wedlock is one which has concerned mankind from time immemorial. Many references to the recognition and treatment of infertility may be found even in the earliest writings of man, and from those early times until the present there has been an unending quest for the answer to this problem, the path of which has led through many strange fields ranging from the divine to the witches brew. This is evidenced by the vast number of heathen, mythological, and other fabulous deities and powers in which the faculty of being able to restore fertility has been invested by credulous mankind. In China to-day for example statues of the goddess of fertility, Kwan Yen are to be seen with their kneeling stones almost worn away by the knees of countless thousands of barren women who. by supplication to this deity, believed that the blessing of fecundity would be bestowed upon them. Likewise the folklore of virtually every nation on earth contains many and varied, and often weird rites and ceremonies to say nothing of extraordinary recipes and formulae, all of which are believed capable of exorcizing the evil spirit of sterility

History of Concussion and Current Functional Movement Screen Scores in a Collegiate Recreational Population

    Get PDF
Introduction: 1.6-3.8 million concussions occur annually related to sport.1 Although neurometabolic alterations in the brain last 7-10 days following a concussion, an increased Cortical Silent Period (CSP) has been found to persist after 19 months.2,3 Further, movement impairments have been noted years after injury.4 The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) assesses mobility and stability in the body.5 The purpose of this study was to assess if FMS scores correlate to history of a concussion in healthy college club sport participants. Methods: Health history and FMS score were collected on 55 participants (38 male, 17 female). Correlation between history of concussion and FMS score was assessed in SPSS. Results: Past history of concussion did not correlate to composite FMS score (R=.076). Conclusion: Past history of concussion does not affect FMS score

Discrimination Of Automobile Carpet Fibers Using Multiple Analytical Techniques And The Subsequent Creation Of A Searchable Data

    Get PDF
Forensic fiber examination is an important part of trace evidence analysis. Fibers may be recovered from a crime scene that could link a particular suspect to the scene. Clothing fibers are most frequently encountered but automobile carpeting fibers may also be recovered. An understanding of the frequency of occurrence and the discrimination power of different analytical techniques is needed in order to better establish the evidentiary value of automobile carpet fiber evidence. Seventy-five automobile carpet fiber samples were analyzed using a series of techniques ranging from nondestructive to destructive. These techniques included polarized light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, microspectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, microtomy (cross section analysis), dye extraction and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Based on the information obtained from these techniques an overall discrimination of 98.02% was calculated. Only 55 of 2775 pairwise comparisons were indistinguishable. The information was subsequently entered into a searchable database for general public use
