    Immigrant fertility in West Germany: is there a socialization effect in transitions to second and third births?

    In this paper on immigrant fertility in West Germany, we estimate the transition rates to second and third births, using intensity-regression models. The data come from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study. We distinguish women of the first and the second immigrant generations originating from Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, and Spain, and compare their fertility levels to those of West German women. In the theoretical framework, we discuss competing hypotheses on migrant fertility. The findings support mainly the socialization hypothesis: the transition rates of first-generation immigrants vary by country of origin, and the fertility patterns of migrant descendants resemble more closely those of West Germans than those of the first immigrant generation. In addition, the analyses show that fertility differentials between immigrants and women of the indigenous population can largely, though not in full, be explained by compositional differences.Dans cet article relatif Ă  la fĂ©conditĂ© des immigrĂ©es en Allemagne, le passage du premier au deuxieme enfant et dans celui du deuxieme au troisieme enfant est estimĂ© Ă  partir de modĂšles de rĂ©gression Ă  risques instantanĂ©s.     Liverpool telescope 2: a new robotic facility for rapid transient follow-up

    The Liverpool Telescope is one of the world's premier facilities for time domain astronomy. The time domain landscape is set to radically change in the coming decade, with surveys such as LSST providing huge numbers of transient detections on a nightly basis; transient detections across the electromagnetic spectrum from other facilities such as SVOM, SKA and CTA; and the era of `multi-messenger astronomy', wherein events are detected via non-electromagnetic means, such as gravitational wave emission. We describe here our plans for Liverpool Telescope 2: a new robotic telescope designed to capitalise on this new era of time domain astronomy. LT2 will be a 4-metre class facility co-located with the LT at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos on the Canary island of La Palma. The telescope will be designed for extremely rapid response: the aim is that the telescope will take data within 30 seconds of the receipt of a trigger from another facility. The motivation for this is twofold: firstly it will make it a world-leading facility for the study of fast fading transients and explosive phenomena discovered at early times. Secondly, it will enable large-scale programmes of low-to-intermediate resolution spectral classification of transients to be performed with great efficiency. In the target-rich environment of the LSST era, minimising acquisition overheads will be key to maximising the science gains from any follow-up programme. The telescope will have a diverse instrument suite which is simultaneously mounted for automatic changes, but it is envisaged that the primary instrument will be an intermediate resolution, optical/infrared spectrograph for scientific exploitation of transients discovered with the next generation of synoptic survey facilities.     Electrochemical deposition of platinum nanoparticles on different carbon supports and conducting polymers

    Electrodeposition of Pt nanoparticles under potentiostatic conditions was performed on several types of carbon electrode supports: commercial macroporous carbon (a three-dimensional electrode), glassy carbon and graphite. Conducting polymers (poly-aniline and poly-oaminophenol) were also used. The platinum nanoparticles were obtained by different Potential Step Deposition (PSD) methods in 5 mM H2PtCl6 + 0.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solutions. The effect of the final potential, time and number of steps on the quantity, distribution and size of the platinum nanoparticles was analysed. The mechanism of the electrochemical deposition of platinum was studied through the application of theoretical modelling. The progressive nucleation mechanism provided the closest agreement with the results obtained. In addition, the chemical state and morphology of the electrodeposited materials were determined by means of SEM, TEM and XPS. The results show that the carbon material structure has a strong influence on the Pt particle structure and this, in turn, affects the catalytic activity.Spanish Ministerio de EducaciĂłn y Ciencia (Projects CTQ2006-08958/PPQ and MAT2004-1479) and the EU (FEDER)
