How does breakup influence the total fusion of Li at the Coulomb barrier?
Total (complete + incomplete) fusion excitation functions of Li on
Co and Bi targets around the Coulomb barrier are obtained using
a new continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method of calculating
fusion. The relative importance of breakup and bound-state structure effects on
total fusion is particularly investigated. The effect of breakup on fusion can
be observed in the total fusion excitation function. The breakup enhances the
total fusion at energies just around the barrier, whereas it hardly affects the
total fusion at energies well above the barrier. The difference between the
experimental total fusion cross sections for Li on Co is notably
caused by breakup, but this is not the case for the Bi target.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Has a Higgs-flavon with a GeV mass been detected at the LHC13?
Higgs-flavon fields appear as a part of the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism,
which attempts to explain the hierarchy of Yukawa couplings. We explore the
possibility that the 750 GeV diphoton resonance recently reported at the LHC13,
could be identified with a low-scale Higgs-flavon field and find the
region of the parameter space consistent with CMS and ATLAS data. It is found
that the extra vector-like fermions of the ultraviolet completion of the FN
mechanism are necessary in order to reproduce the observed signal. We consider
a standard model (SM) extension that contains two Higgs doublets (a standard
one and an inert one) and one complex FN singlet. The inert doublet includes a
stable neutral boson, which provides a viable dark matter candidate, while the
mixing of the standard doublet and the FN singlet induces flavor violation in
the Higgs sector at the tree-level. Constraints on the parameters of the model
are derived from the LHC Higgs data, which include the search for the lepton
flavor violating decay of the SM Higgs boson . It is also
found that in some region of the parameter space the model may give rise to a
large branching ratio for the decay, of the order of 0.1, which

The 2009 National School Climate Survey: The Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in Our Nation's Schools
National survey of the school experiences of 7,261 lesbian, gay, bisexual and trasngender secondary school students.In our 2009 survey, we examine the experiences of LGBT students with regard to indicators of negative school climate:hearing biased remarks, including homophobic remarks, in school;feeling unsafe in school because of personal characteristics, such as sexual orientation, gender expression, or race/ethnicity;missing classes or days of school because of safety reasons; andexperiences of harassment and assault in school. We also examine the possible negative effects of a hostile school climate on LGBT students' academic achievement, educational aspirations, and psychological well-being. We explore the diverse nature of LGBT students' experiences by reporting on how these differ by students' personal and community characteristics. We also examine whether or not students report experiences of victimization to school officials or to family members and how these adults address the problem. In addition, we demonstrate the degree to which LGBT students have access to supportive resources in school, and we explore the possible benefits of these resources, including Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), school harassment/assault policies, supportive school staff, and curriculum that is inclusive of LGBT-related topics.Given that we now have 10 years of data, we examine changes over the past decade on both indicators of negative school climate and levels of access to LGBT-related resources in schools
Vacuum-UV spectroscopy of interstellar ice analogs. II. Absorption cross-sections of nonpolar ice molecules
Dust grains in cold circumstellar regions and dark-cloud interiors at 10-20 K
are covered by ice mantles. A nonthermal desorption mechanism is invoked to
explain the presence of gas-phase molecules in these environments, such as the
photodesorption induced by irradiation of ice due to secondary ultraviolet
photons. To quantify the effects of ice photoprocessing, an estimate of the
photon absorption in ice mantles is required. In a recent work, we reported the
vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption cross sections of nonpolar molecules in the
solid phase. The aim was to estimate the VUV-absorption cross sections of
nonpolar molecular ice components, including CH4, CO2, N2, and O2. The column
densities of the ice samples deposited at 8 K were measured in situ by infrared
spectroscopy in transmittance. VUV spectra of the ice samples were collected in
the 120-160 nm (10.33-7.74 eV) range using a commercial microwave-discharged
hydrogen flow lamp. We found that, as expected, solid N2 has the lowest
VUV-absorption cross section, which about three orders of magnitude lower than
that of other species such as O2, which is also homonuclear. Methane (CH4) ice
presents a high absorption near Ly-alpha (121.6 nm) and does not absorb below
148 nm. Estimating the ice absorption cross sections is essential for models of
ice photoprocessing and allows estimating the ice photodesorption rates as the
number of photodesorbed molecules per absorbed photon in the ice.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 7 table
Transient lateral photovoltaic effect in patterned metal-oxide-semiconductor films
The time dependent transient lateral photovoltaic effect has been studied
with us time resolution and with chopping frequencies in the kHz range, in
lithographically patterned 21 nm thick, 5, 10 and 20 um wide and 1500 um long
Co lines grown over naturally passivated p-type Si (100). We have observed a
nearly linear dependence of the transitorial response with the laser spot
position. A transitorial response with a sign change in the laser-off stage has
been corroborated by numerical simulations. A qualitative explanation suggests
a modification of the drift-diffusion model by including the in uence of a
local inductance. Our findings indicate that the microstructuring of position
sensitive detectors could improve their space-time resolution.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
