    Global topological control for synchronized dynamics on networks

    A general scheme is proposed and tested to control the symmetry breaking instability of a homogeneous solution of a spatially extended multispecies model, defined on a network. The inherent discreteness of the space makes it possible to act on the topology of the inter-nodes contacts to achieve the desired degree of stabilization, without altering the dynamical parameters of the model. Both symmetric and asymmetric couplings are considered. In this latter setting the web of contacts is assumed to be balanced, for the homogeneous equilibrium to exist. The performance of the proposed method are assessed, assuming the Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation as a reference model. In this case, the implemented control allows one to stabilize the synchronous limit cycle, hence time-dependent, uniform solution. A system of coupled real Ginzburg-Landau equations is also investigated to obtain the topological stabilization of a homogeneous and constant fixed point

    To evaluate and compare histomorphometrically the bone response to two xenografts, one bovine and the other porcine, grafted in adjacent extraction sockets in a human. In this case report, two adjacent maxillary premolars were extracted, and the sockets were filled with two different xenogeneic bone substitutes (first premolar with bovine bone, and second premolar with porcine bone) to counteract post-extraction volume loss. Following 6 months bone core specimens were harvested during the placement of implants at the regenerated sites. Histomorphometrically, for the bovine xenograft the percentage of newly formed bone (osteoid) was 26.85%, the percentage of the residual graft material was 17.2% and the percentage of connective tissue 48.73%, while for the porcine xenograft, newly formed bone (osteoid) represented 32.19%, residual graft material was 6.57% and non-mineralized connective tissue was 52.99%. Histological results indicated that both biomaterials assessed in this study as grafts for socket preservation technique are biocompatible and osteoconductive. Bovine bone derived demonstrated to be less resorbable than porcine bone derived. Both xenogenic biomaterials did not interfere with the normal bone reparative processe

Most national Olympiads had to be moved online, a process which poses a number of serious challenges. Help across countries is of uttermost importance in this context, to enable a successful continuation of the IOI during globally hard times. In this paper, we share the experience gained and tools produced during a year of online Olympiads in Italy, hoping that other countries can take profit of these (freely available) tools and suggestions for their own Olympiads

    Abstract This work focuses on the experimental validation of a numerical tool realized to simulate a commercial hot water storage tank. The tool implements unsteady 1D models to simulate the temporal evolution of the temperature field inside the hot water storage tank, and the one relative to the heat transfer fluid flowing through the immersed coil heat exchanger. It has been implemented by means of the Simulink tool of Matlab. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the description of the indoor experimental facility used to realize the experimental test. Successively, the analytical models, and the numerical schemes and algorithms used to perform the numerical simulations are described. Finally, the results of the experimental validation of the tool, accomplished by comparing the experimental temperature profiles inside the tank, and the measured temperatures at the coil heat exchanger exit section over the entire experimental test duration, with the numerical results obtained from simulations performed using different correlations for the evaluation of the heat transfer rate between the tank water and the heat transfer fluid through the coil, are reported and discussed

    A case of acute aortic dissection type b associated with cushing's syndrome

    We report a case of a 63-year-old man, with a previous history of hypertension and glucose intolerance associated troncular obesity that was emergently admitted to our Institution for evaluation of a severe, constant posterior chest pain which radiated anteriorly and dyspnoea with a suspected diagnosis of acute aortic dissection. A CT scan of thorax and abdomen demonstrated a dissection starting just below left succlavian artery and extending downward to the left renal artery, involving the celiac tripod and superior mesenteric artery. The dissection was classified as Stanford B, De Bakey III. Moreover, CT scan of abdomen revealed incidentally a left adrenal tumor of 25 mm of diameter. An emergent prosthetic graft was placed just below the origin of the left succlavian artery up-to the diaphragmatic hiatus. Furthermore, a diagnostic evaluation of the mass revealed an increase of cortisol production, and a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was done and the patient underwent an adrenalectomy via laparotomic approach. We report an association of acute aortic dissection of acute aortic dissection type B associated to Cushing's syndrome. Cushing's syndrome; Adrenocortical adenoma; Aortic dissection type B

    Chondromyxoid Fibroma of the Lateral Malleolus: A Case Report

    Chondromyxoid fibromas account for <1% of primary bone neoplasms. We report one such case occurring in the distal fibula of a 27-year-old woman. The patient underwent curettage, followed by phenolisation, insertion of a Steinmann pin, and cementation. This treatment reduced morbidity, restored stability, and enabled rapid functional recovery. There was no recurrence after 2 years
