    Naked Hitchhikers: The Unknown Photography of William A. Rhoads

    William A. Rhoads was an avid photographer of male nudes, mostly sourced from hitchhikers he picked up in California in the 1970s. His efforts were prolific and sustained – and secret – and likely made and retained for private enjoyment. The photographs were never shown in public in Rhoads’ lifetime. I approach his project, firstly, from the perspective of its historical and cultural contexts of emergence and development; and secondly in terms of the taxonomic challenges his photographs pose, in relation to established histories of art and pornography, which were being called strikingly into question in the 1970s. Both approaches allow Rhoads to be understood beyond the traditional aesthetic distinction between art and pornography – or more precisely, between a personal, erotic practice and a formal artistic one

    The use of metabonomics to uncover differences between the small molecule profiles of eggs from cage and barn housing systems

    Metabonomic techniques have been used to observe differences in the small molecule profiles of chicken eggs, to work towards the detection, and thus prevention, of fraud regarding the misrepresentation of egg farming systems. High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole-Time-of-Flight-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-Q-ToF-MS) was used to obtain profiles of the small molecules found in the yolks of eggs that were laid by hens in enriched cage systems, and in barn systems. Statistical analysis of these small molecule profiles, including the use of XCMS Online and multivariate statistics, was able to uncover differences between the yolks of cage and barn eggs. Several unidentified compounds were found to be present in significantly different abundances between cage and barn egg yolks and one of these compounds was tentatively identified, through the use of METLIN, as 1,2-dipalmitoyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine

    The magnetic structure and field dependence of the cycloid phas mediating the spin reorientation transition in Ca₃Ru₂O₇

    We report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the magnetic structure of the cycloidal phase in Ca3Ru2O7, which mediates the spin reorientation transition, and establishes its magnetic phase diagram. In zero applied field, single-crystal neutron diffraction data confirms the scenario deduced from an earlier resonant x-ray scattering study: between 46.7~K <T<49.0~K the magnetic moments form a cycloid in the a−b plane with a propagation wavevector of (δ,0,1) with δ≃0.025 and an ordered moment of about 1 μB, with the eccentricity of the cycloid evolving with temperature. In an applied magnetic field applied parallel to the b-axis, the intensity of the (δ,0,1) satellite peaks decreases continuously up to about μ0H≃5 T, above which field the system becomes field polarised. Both the eccentricity of the cycloid and the wavevector increase with field, the latter suggesting an enhancement of the anti−symmetric Dzyaloshinskii−Moriya interaction via magnetostriction effects. Transitions between the various low-temperature magnetic phases have been carefully mapped out using magnetometry and resistivity. The resulting phase diagram reveals that the cycloid phase exists in a temperature window that expands rapidly with increasing field, before transitioning to a polarised paramagnetic state at 5 T. High-field magnetoresistance measurements show that below T≃70 K the resistivity increases continuously with decreasing temperature, indicating the inherent insulating nature at low temperatures of our high-quality, untwinned, single-crystals. We discuss our results with reference to previous reports of the magnetic phase diagram of Ca3Ru2O7 that utilised samples which were more metallic and/or poly-domain

    The Origin of Black Hole Entropy in String Theory

    I review some recent work in which the quantum states of string theory which are associated with certain black holes have been identified and counted. For large black holes, the number of states turns out to be precisely the exponential of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.     Topiramate in the treatment of compulsive sexual behavior: case report

    BACKGROUND: Among the multiple mechanisms of action of topiramate, AMPA/kainate antagonism may be particularly interesting for the treatment of disorders characterized by conditioned cognitive and behavioral cue reactivity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient consulting primarily for obesity and cue triggered snacking, who responded well on topiramate at doses up to 50 mg. Coincidentally he reported on an improvement of compulsive nonparaphilic sexual behaviors (consumption of prostitution), which was also strongly triggered by environmental cues. Both addictive behaviors (snacking and consumption of prostitution) reoccurred after discontinuation of topiramate and again responded reintroduction of the drug. CONCLUSION: The present case report of topiramate's effect on comorbid obesity and nonparaphilic addiction could be interpreted as a further indication that topiramate acts on the common pathway underlying conditioned behaviors and seems to be a treatment of behavioral disorders associated with environmental cues

    Visual Field Endpoints Based on Subgroups of Points May Be Useful in Glaucoma Clinical Trials: A Study With the Humphrey Field Analyzer and Compass Perimeter

    PRECIS: Visual field endpoints based on average deviation of specific subsets of points rather than all points may offer a more homogenous dataset without necessarily worsening test-retest variability and so may be useful in clinical trials. PURPOSE: To characterize outcome measures encompassing particular subsets of visual field points and compare them as obtained with Humphrey (HVF) and Compass perimeters. METHODS: 30 patients with imaging-based glaucomatous neuropathy performed a pair of 24-2 tests with each of 2 perimeters. Non-weighted mean deviation (MD) was calculated for the whole field and separate vertical hemifields, and again after censoring of points with low sensitivity (MDc) and subsequently including only "abnormal" points with total deviation probability of <5% (MDc5%) or <2% (MDc2%). Test-retest variability was assessed using Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement (95%LoA). RESULTS: For the whole field, using HVF, MD was -7.5±6.9▒dB, MDc -3.6±2.8▒dB, MDc5% -6.4±1.7▒dB and MDc2% -7.3±1.5▒dB. With Compass MD was -7.5±6.6, MDc -2.9±1.7▒dB, MDc5% -6.3±1.5, and MDC2% -7.9±1.6. The respective 95% LoA were 5.5, 5.3, 4.6 and 5.6 with HVF, and 4.8, 3.7, 7.1 and 7.1 with Compass. The respective number of eligible points were 52, 42±12, 20±11 and 15±9 with HVF, and 52, 41.2±12.6, 10±7 and 7±5 with Compass. With both machines, standard deviation (SD) and 95%LoA increased in hemifields compared to the total field, but this increase was mitigated after censoring. CONCLUSIONS: Restricting analysis to particular subsets of points of interest in the visual field after censoring points with low sensitivity, as compared with using the familiar total field mean deviation, can provide outcome measures with a broader range of mean deviation, a markedly reduced SD and therefore more homogenous dataset, without necessarily worsening test-retest variability
