Comparing the correlation length of grain markets in China and France
In economics comparative analysis plays the same role as experimental
research in physics. In this paper we closely examine several methodological
problems related to comparative analysis by investigating the specific example
of grain markets in China and France respectively. This enables us to answer a
question in economic history which has so far remained pending, namely whether
or not market integration progressed in the 18th century. In economics as in
physics, before being accepted any new result has to be checked and re-checked
by different researchers. This is what we call the replication and comparison

E(5), X(5), and Prolate to Oblate Shape Phase Transitions in Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov Theory
Relativistic mean field theory with the NL3 force is used for producing
potential energy surfaces (PES) for series of isotopes suggested as exhibiting
critical point symmetries. Relatively flat PES are obtained for nuclei showing
the E(5) symmetry, while in nuclei corresponding to the X(5) case, PES with a
bump are obtained. The PES corresponding to the Pt chain of isotopes suggest a

Surface and Sub-Surface Composition and Properties of Ion-Bombarded Lithium Alloys
Lithium-bearing alloys such as Si-Li, Al-Li and Cu-Li are of importance in a variety of technological applications, many of them depending on the fact that the surface composition of these alloys differs significantly from that of the bulk, both at thermal equilibrium and under ion bombardment. During ion sputtering, these materials exhibit a variety of phenomena which affect the surface composition and concentration depth profile in a complex manner. We present here experimental measurements of the surface and near-surface composition profiles of sputtered Cu-Li and Al-Li alloys. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of surface loss and radiation-induced segregation processes. Emphasis is placed on the use of these materials for use as plasma-interactive components in magnetic-confinement fusion applications
Lifetime measurements in Co and Co
Lifetimes of the and states in Co and the
state in Co were measured using the recoil distance Doppler
shift and the differential decay curve methods. The nuclei were populated by
multi-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics. Gamma rays were
measured with the EXOGAM Ge array and the recoiling fragments were fully
identified using the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The E2 transition
probabilities from the and states to the ground
state could be extracted in Co as well as an upper limit for the
(E2) value in Co. The experimental
results were compared to large-scale shell-model calculations in the and
model spaces, allowing to draw conclusions on the single-particle

coupling determined beyond the chiral limit
Within the conventional QCD sum rules, we calculate the coupling
constant, , beyond the chiral limit using two-point correlation
function with a pion. We consider the Dirac structure, , at
order, which has clear dependence on the PS and PV coupling schemes
for the pion-nucleon interactions. For a consistent treatment of the sum rule,
we include the linear terms in quark mass as they constitute the same chiral
order as . Using the PS coupling scheme for the pion-nucleon
interaction, we obtain , which is very close to the
empirical coupling. This demonstrates that going beyond the chiral
limit is crucial in determining the coupling and the pseudoscalar coupling

49Cr: Towards full spectroscopy up to 4 MeV
The nucleus 49Cr has been studied analysing gamma-gamma coincidences in the
reaction 46Ti(alpha,n)49Cr at the bombarding energy of 12 MeV. The level scheme
has been greatly extended at low excitation energy and several new lifetimes
have been determined by means of the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method.
Shell model calculations in the full pf configuration space reproduce well
negative-parity levels. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for positive parity
levels by extending the configuration space to include a nucleon-hole either in
the 1d3/2 or in the 2s1/2 orbitals.
A nearly one-to-one correspondence is found between experimental and
theoretical levels up to an excitation energy of 4 MeV.
Experimental data and shell model calculations are interpreted in terms of
the Nilsson diagram and the particle-rotor model, showing the strongly coupled
nature of the bands in this prolate nucleus. Nine values of K(pi) are proposed
for the levels observed in this experiment.
As a by-result it is shown that the values of the experimental magnetic
moments in 1f7/2 nuclei are well reproduced without quenching the nucleon

Observation of isotonic symmetry for enhanced quadrupole collectivity in neutron-rich 62,64,66Fe isotopes at N=40
The transition rates for the 2_{1}^{+} states in 62,64,66Fe were studied
using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift technique applied to projectile Coulomb
excitation reactions. The deduced E2 strengths illustrate the enhanced
collectivity of the neutron-rich Fe isotopes up to N=40. The results are
interpreted by the generalized concept of valence proton symmetry which
describes the evolution of nuclear structure around N=40 as governed by the
number of valence protons with respect to Z~30. The deformation suggested by
the experimental data is reproduced by state-of-the-art shell calculations with
a new effective interaction developed for the fpgd valence space.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Increased myocardial susceptibility to repetitive ischemia with high-fat diet-induced obesity.
Obesity and diabetes are frequently associated with cardiovascular disease. When a normal heart is subjected to brief/sublethal repetitive ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), adaptive responses are activated to preserve cardiac structure and function. These responses include but are not limited to alterations in cardiac metabolism, reduced calcium responsiveness, and induction of antioxidant enzymes. In a model of ischemic cardiomyopathy inducible by brief repetitive I/R, we hypothesized that dysregulation of these adaptive responses in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice would contribute to enhanced myocardial injury. DIO C57BL/6J mice were subjected to 15 min of daily repetitive I/R while under short-acting anesthesia, a protocol that results in the development of fibrotic cardiomyopathy. Cardiac lipids and candidate gene expression were analyzed at 3 days, and histology at 5 days of repetitive I/R. Total free fatty acids (FFAs) in the cardiac extracts of DIO mice were significantly elevated, reflecting primarily the dietary fatty acid (FA) composition. Compared with lean controls, cardiac FA oxidation (FAO) capacity of DIO mice was significantly higher, concurrent with increased expression of FA metabolism gene transcripts. Following 15 min of daily repetitive I/R for 3 or 5 days, DIO mice exhibited increased susceptibility to I/R and, in contrast to lean mice, developed microinfarction, which was associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response. Repetitive I/R in DIO mice was associated with more profound significant downregulation of FA metabolism gene transcripts and elevated FFAs and triglycerides. Maladaptive metabolic changes of FA metabolism contribute to enhanced myocardial injury in diet-induced obesity
Transition probabilities in the X(5) candidate Ba
To investigate the possible X(5) character of 122Ba, suggested by the ground
state band energy pattern, the lifetimes of the lowest yrast states of 122Ba
have been measured, via the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method. The relevant
levels have been populated by using the 108Cd(16O,2n)122Ba and the
112Sn(13C,3n)122Ba reactions. The B(E2) values deduced in the present work are
compared to the predictions of the X(5) model and to calculations performed in
the framework of the IBA-1 and IBA-2 models
