ObjectivesTo investigate the etiology, clinical manifestations, imaging features, and treatment of patients with infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS), enhance clinicians' comprehension of this rare disease, and conduct oral deferiprone intervention and subsequent monitoring.MethodsSix patients diagnosed with iSS based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) were enrolled from 2021 to 2023 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. Their clinical datas were summarized, and the etiology and imaging characteristics were analyzed. Follow-up was conducted through telephone or outpatient visits.ResultsAmong the 6 patients, there were 3 males and 3 females. The onset age ranged from 35 to 71 years, with an average onset age of 53 years. The clinical symptoms mainly included acoustic disturbances (6/6), gait imbalance (6/6), dysolfactory (6/6), cognitive impairment (2/6), epilepsy (2/6), and pyramidal tract sign (2/6). Evidence of superficial siderosis was observed on MRI across the cortex, brainstem, cerebellum, and spinal cord in all patients. T2-space sequence MRI revealed two instances of dural tear. During the follow-up period ranging from 1 month to 3 years, three patients who received oral deferiprone treatment showed improvement, whereas the remaining three patients who declined deferiprone treatment demonstrated progression.ConclusionThe primary clinical manifestations of iSS include bilateral sensorineural hearing disturbances, progressive cerebellar ataxia, and spinal cord lesions. The key diagnostic criteria involve the presence of linear hypointensity on T2-WI in the surface region of the nervous system. Dural tear caused by various factors is considered to be the most common cause of iSS, and its treatment mainly involves surgical intervention for hemorrhagic primary diseases as well as pharmacotherapy with deferiprone

On Some Computational Problems in Local Fields

Lattices in Euclidean spaces are important research objects in geometric number theory, and they have important applications in many areas, such as cryptology. The shortest vector problem (SVP) and the closest vector problem (CVP) are two famous computational problems about lattices. In this paper, we define so-called p-adic lattices, and consider the p-adic analogues of SVP and CVP in local fields. We find that, in contrast with lattices in Euclidean spaces, the situation is completely different and interesting. We also develop relevant algorithms, indicating that these problems are computable

Tremadocian (Ordovician) reclined graptolites from Baishan, North China

The Erdaopuzi section in the Baishan area of Jilin Province, northeast China, contains abundant late Tremadoc graptolites. However, there are some taxonomic controversies regarding the characters of the hand specimens that are difficult to identify. In this paper, we present our restudy of isolated graptolites from acid residue and discuss the taxonomic problems of the subgenus Clonograptus (Neoclonograptus) Zhao and Zhang. Four genera and six species were identified, including Adelograptus tenellus (Linnarsson), Ancoragraptus gracilis (Zhao and Zhang), Dictyonema sp., Psigraptus jacksoni Rickards and Stait, Psigraptus lenzi Jackson, Psigraptus arcticus Jackson. According to the significant evolution of morphological characters, two graptolite zones (from bottom to top) can be identified in ascending order in the study area, i.e. Adelograptus Zone and the Psigraptus Zone

Public-key Cryptosystems and Signature Schemes from p-adic Lattices

In 2018, the longest vector problem and closest vector problem in local fields were introduced, as the p-adic analogues of the shortest vector problem and closest vector problem in lattices of Euclidean spaces. They are considered to be hard and useful in constructing cryptographic primitives, but no applications in cryptography were given. In this paper, we construct the first signature scheme and public-key encryption cryptosystem based on p-adic lattice by proposing a trapdoor function with the orthogonal basis of p-adic lattice. These cryptographic schemes have reasonable key size and efficiency, which shows that p-adic lattice can be a new alternative to construct cryptographic primitives and well worth studying

Metagenomic Sequencing Identifies Highly Diverse Assemblages of Dinoflagellate Cysts in Sediments From Ships\u27 Ballast Tanks

Ships\u27 ballast tanks have long been known as vectors for the introduction of organisms. We applied next-generation sequencing to detect dinoflagellates (mainly as cysts) in 32 ballast tank sediments collected during 2001-2003 from ships entering the Great Lakes or Chesapeake Bay and subsequently archived. Seventy-three dinoflagellates were fully identified to species level by this metagenomic approach and single-cell polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based sequencing, including 19 toxic species, 36 harmful algal bloom (HAB) forming species, 22 previously unreported as producing cysts, and 55 reported from ballast tank sediments for the first time (including 13 freshwater species), plus 545 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) not fully identified due to a lack of reference sequences, indicating tank sediments are repositories of many previously undocumented taxa. Analyses indicated great heterogeneity of species composition among samples from different sources. Light and scanning electron microscopy and single-cell PCR sequencing supported and confirmed results of the metagenomic approach. This study increases the number of fully identified dinoflagellate species from ballast tank sediments to 142 (\u3e 50% increase). From the perspective of ballast water management, the high diversity and spatiotemporal heterogeneity of dinoflagellates in ballast tanks argues for continuing research and stringent adherence to procedures intended to prevent unintended introduction of non-indigenous toxic and HAB-forming species
