Traces of Lorentz symmetry breaking in a Hydrogen atom at ground state

Some traces of a specific Lorentz symmetry breaking scenario in the ground state of the Hydrogen atom are investigated. It is used standard Rayleigh-Schr\"odinger perturbation theory in order to obtain the corrections to the the ground state energy and wave function. It is shown that an induced four-pole moment arises, due to the Lorentz symmetry breaking. The model considered is the one studied in reference Eur. Phys. J. C {\bf 74}, 2937 (2014), where the Lorentz symmetry is broken in the electromagnetic sector.Comment: 8 Latex pages, 2 figure

Village economies and the structure of extended family networks

This paper documents how the structure of extended family networks in rural Mexico relates to the poverty and inequality of the village of residence. Using the Hispanic naming convention, we construct within-village extended family networks in 504 poor rural villages. Family networks are larger (both in the number of members and as a share of the village population) and out-migration is lower the poorer and the less unequal the village of residence. Our results are consistent with the extended family being a source of informal insurance to its members

Family networks and school enrolment: evidence from a randomized social experiment

We present evidence on whether and how a household’s behavior is influenced by the presence and characteristics of its extended family. Using data from the PROGRESA program in Mexico, we exploit information on the paternal and maternal surnames of heads and spouses in conjunction with the Spanish naming convention to identify the inter and intra generational family links of each household to others in the same village. We then exploit the randomized research design of the PROGRESA evaluation data to identify whether the treatment effects of PROGRESA transfers on secondary school enrolment vary according to the characteristics of extended family. We find PROGRESA only raises secondary enrolment among households that are embedded in a family network. Eligible but isolated households do not respond. The mechanism through which the extended family influences household schooling choices is the redistribution of resources within the family network from eligibles that receive de facto unconditional cash transfers from PROGRESA, towards eligibles on the margin of enrolling children into secondary school

The known geographical distribution of 12 bryophyte species is extended by confirmation of their presence in the state of Pernambuco. Leptoscyphus porphyrius (Nees) Grolle, Harpalejeunea uncinata Steph., Chryso-hypnum diminutivum (Hampe) Buck and Porotrichum korthalsianum (Dozy & Molk.) Mitt. are new to northeastern Brazil. The material studied was collected in remnants of Atlantic Forest situated at altitudes of 100-1.100m. The principal taxonomic characteristics are cited, with ecological and distributional commentary provided.A distribuição geogrĂĄfica conhecida de 12 espĂ©cies de briĂłfitas Ă© ampliada, com o registro de sua ocorrĂȘncia no estado de Pernambuco. Extended Family Networks in Rural Mexico: A Descriptive Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide descriptive evidence on the characteristics of a household’s extended family network using data from the Progresa social assistance program in rural Mexico. We exploit information on the paternal and maternal surnames of household heads and their spouses and the patronymic naming convention to identify the inter and intra generational family links of each household to others in the village. This provides an almost complete mapping of extended family networks structures across 506 Mexican villages, covering 22,000 households and over 130,000 individuals. We then provide evidence on – (i) whether husbands and wives differ in the extent to which members of their extended family are located in geographic proximity; (ii) the characteristics that predict the existence of extended family links; (iii) the similarity of households within the same family network in terms of their poverty, and how this differs within and between generations of the extended family.extended family network, Progresa

Ensino de História: temporalidade, pós-verdade e verdade poética

Listening to undergraduate students in the 4 supervised internships available at the Department of History of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), I have noticed that 2 themes frequently appear and reappear: a) a certain lack of interest, at least initially, of basic education students in the past, in history, and in History teaching, especially with regard to a specific way of relating to the past times: the epistemological-critical-pragmatic; and also b) a certain questioning by the students (sometimes even more energetic/violent) of certain interpretations proposed by teachers. We have been thinking about these challenges throughout our courses, so this article addresses part of our discussions on the themes of temporality and post-truth, especially concerning a certain lack of interest in history and the History teaching. And, finally, we thematize an epistemological behavior through which a certain re-enchantment of history and History teaching could be possible, what I call poetic truth. Keywords: temporality; post-truth; poetic truth. When we think about cloistering what immediately comes to mind are the histories of women who, for various reasons, were forced by their families to become nuns. For noble families, the dissolution of the family’s state by dowry was a major concern, as was the dishonor of a marriage with a groom of inferior social status. Most of the time, instigating a daughter to join a nunnery could be a dignified way to avoid these undesirable consequences, and one of lower cost to parents, even if it would cost these women’s «freedom». By the analysis of Fr. Agostinho de Santa Maria’s book, entitled Historia da vida admiravel & das acçÔes prodigiosas da veneravel Madre Soror Brizida de S. Antonio [
] published in 1701, I was able to notice that the opposite also was possible, that is to say, that the nunnery might also represent a place of female autonomy. Sister BrĂgida’s (Brizida) case differs in many aspects from the general scenario presented above. She, then called Leonor de Mendanha, was the only heir of a very noble family; she had a rich dowry and many wooers, attracted by her « fermosura » [beauty] and virtue (or maybe by her many possessions) and her mother was eager to marry her. However, Leonor did not share her mother’s feelings and decided to live her life in a very different manner. In this paper I’ll attempt to analyze the strategies used by this future nun to impose her will, and I’ll attempt understand the characterization of the models of female sanctity existent in this period, especially with regards to one of its aspects, that of ascetic practices
