eleanor: An open-source tool for extracting light curves from the TESS Full-Frame Images

During its two year prime mission the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will perform a time-series photometric survey covering over 80% of the sky. This survey comprises observations of 26 24 x 96 degree sectors that are each monitored continuously for approximately 27 days. The main goal of TESS is to find transiting planets around 200,000 pre-selected stars for which fixed aperture photometry is recorded every two minutes. However, TESS is also recording and delivering Full-Frame Images (FFIs) of each detector at a 30 minute cadence. We have created an open-source tool, eleanor, to produce light curves for objects in the TESS FFIs. Here, we describe the methods used in eleanor to produce light curves that are optimized for planet searches. The tool performs background subtraction, aperture and PSF photometry, decorrelation of instrument systematics, and cotrending using principal component analysis. We recover known transiting exoplanets in the FFIs to validate the pipeline and perform a limited search for new planet candidates in Sector 1. Our tests indicate that eleanor produces light curves with significantly less scatter than other tools that have been used in the literature. Cadence-stacked images, and raw and detrended eleanor light curves for each analyzed star will be hosted on MAST, with planet candidates on ExoFOP-TESS as Community TESS Objects of Interest (CTOIs). This work confirms the promise that the TESS FFIs will enable the detection of thousands of new exoplanets and a broad range of time domain astrophysics.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, Accepted to PAS

Mechanism of active targeting in solid tumors with transferrin-containing gold nanoparticles

    Get PDF
PEGylated gold nanoparticles are decorated with various amounts of human transferrin (Tf) to give a series of Tf-targeted particles with near-constant size and electrokinetic potential. The effects of Tf content on nanoparticle tumor targeting were investigated in mice bearing s.c. Neuro2A tumors. Quantitative biodistributions of the nanoparticles 24 h after i.v. tail-vein injections show that the nanoparticle accumulations in the tumors and other organs are independent of Tf. However, the nanoparticle localizations within a particular organ are influenced by the Tf content. In tumor tissue, the content of targeting ligands significantly influences the number of nanoparticles localized within the cancer cells. In liver tissue, high Tf content leads to small amounts of the nanoparticles residing in hepatocytes, whereas most nanoparticles remain in nonparenchymal cells. These results suggest that targeted nanoparticles can provide greater intracellular delivery of therapeutic agents to the cancer cells within solid tumors than their nontargeted analogs

Experimental noninferiority trial of synthetic small-caliber biodegradable versus stable vascular grafts

ObjectiveLong-term evolution of polycaprolactone vascular prostheses has been investigated recently. The goal of this study was to evidence a noninferiority of such grafts compared with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) implants in an aortic replacement model in the rat.MethodsFourteen anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats received an infrarenal aortic graft (biodegradable, n = 8; expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, n = 6) replacement (end to end; inner diameter, 2 mm). Biodegradable grafts (polycaprolactone) were produced by random micro-/nanofiber electrospinning. After a median survival of 16.5 months, in vivo ultrasonography and angiography as well as postexplantation microcomputed tomography, histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy were performed.ResultsPatency was 100% for polycaprolactone and 67% for ePTFE. No aneurysmal dilatation or stenoses were found in either group. Compliance was significantly higher for polycaprolactone compared with ePTFE (8.2 ± 1.0%/100 mm Hg vs 5.7 ± 0.7%/100 mm Hg; P < .01), but markedly reduced compared with adjacent native aortas and the control group. Histologically, low cellular in-growth was found in ePTFE whereas polycaprolactone showed significantly greater homogenous cellularity, producing an autologous extracellular matrix (10.8% ± 4.0% vs 32.1% ± 9.2%, P < .0001). Morphometry showed 100% neo-endothelialization for both grafts with a totally confluent endothelial coverage for polycaprolactone grafts by scanning electron microscope. More intimal hyperplasia was found in ePTFE compared with polycaprolactone grafts. Calcification was higher in ePTFE than in polycaprolactone grafts (15.8% vs 7.0%, P = .04) and was absent in controls.ConclusionsOutcomes of synthetic biodegradable nanofiber polycaprolactone grafts are not inferior compared with the clinically used expanded polytetrafluoroethylene grafts after long-term implantation in the rat aorta. Moreover, these implants show better patency, compliance, endothelialization, and cell in-growth, and less intimal hyperplasia and calcification than their counterparts

    Get PDF
