    Resistance to autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease in an APOE3 Christchurch homozygote: a case report.

    We identified a PSEN1 (presenilin 1) mutation carrier from the world's largest autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease kindred, who did not develop mild cognitive impairment until her seventies, three decades after the expected age of clinical onset. The individual had two copies of the APOE3 Christchurch (R136S) mutation, unusually high brain amyloid levels and limited tau and neurodegenerative measurements. Our findings have implications for the role of APOE in the pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease

WSMV is typically controlled using cultural practices such as the removal of volunteer wheat. Genetic resistance is limited. Until recently, no varieties have been available with major resistance genes to WSMV. Two resistance genes have been derived from Thinopyrum intermedium through chromosome engineering, while a third gene was transferred from bread wheat through classical breeding. New sources of resistance are needed and synthetic wheat lines provide a means of accessing genetic variability in wheat progenitors. A collection of wheat synthetic lines was screened for WSMV resistance. Four lines, 07-SYN-27, -106, -164, and -383 had significant levels of resistance. Resistance was effective at 18 °C and virus accumulation was similar to the resistant control, WGGRC50 containing Wsm1. At 25 °C, resistance was no longer effective and virus accumulation was similar to the susceptible control, Tomahawk

    Obfuscated Fuzzy Hamming Distance and Conjunctions from Subset Product Problems

    We consider the problem of obfuscating programs for fuzzy matching (in other words, testing whether the Hamming distance between an nn-bit input and a fixed nn-bit target vector is smaller than some predetermined threshold). This problem arises in biometric matching and other contexts. We present a virtual-black-box (VBB) secure and input-hiding obfuscator for fuzzy matching for Hamming distance, based on certain natural number-theoretic computational assumptions. In contrast to schemes based on coding theory, our obfuscator is based on computational hardness rather than information-theoretic hardness, and can be implemented for a much wider range of parameters. The Hamming distance obfuscator can also be applied to obfuscation of matching under the ℓ1\ell_1 norm on Zn\mathbb{Z}^n. We also consider obfuscating conjunctions. Conjunctions are equivalent to pattern matching with wildcards, which can be reduced in some cases to fuzzy matching. Our approach does not cover as general a range of parameters as other solutions, but it is much more compact. We study the relation between our obfuscation schemes and other obfuscators and give some advantages of our solution

    Lawson criterion for ignition exceeded in an inertial fusion experiment

    For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion

    What Is the Impact of On-street Parking Information for Drivers?

    Parking Guidance and Information (PGI) solutions are a well-known class of Intelligent Transportation Systems meant to support drivers by recommending locations and routes with higher chance to find parking. However, the relevance of such systems for on-street parking spaces is barely studied. In this paper, we investigate the consequences of providing the drivers with different parking information to the search. Based on real-world parking data from San Francisco, we investigated the scenario in which a driver does not find a parking space at the destination and has to decide on the next road to go. We consider three different scenarios: (I) No parking availability information; (II) static information about the capacity of a road segment and temporary parking limitations; (III) real-time information collected from stationary sensors. Clearly the latter has strong implications in terms of deployment and operational costs. These scenarios lead to three different guidance strategies for a PGI system. The empirical experiments we conducted on real on-street parking data from San Francisco show that there is a significant reduction of parking search with more informed strategies, and that the use of real-time information offers only a limited improvement over static one
