Internet of Threads
In the beginning, Internet and TCP/IP protocols
were based on the idea of connecting computers, so the address-
able entities were networking adapters. Due to the evolution of
networking and Internet services, physical computers no longer
have a central role. Addressing networking adapters as if they
were the true ends of communication has become obsolete. Within
Internet of Threads, processes can be autonomous nodes of the
Internet, i.e., can have their own IP addresses, routing and QoS
policies, etc. In other words, the Internet of Threads definition
enables networked software appliances to be implemented, These
appliances are processes able to autonomously interoperate on the
network, i.e., the software counterpart of the Internet of Things
objects. This paper will examine some usage cases of Internet of
Threads, discussing the specific improvements provided by the
new networking support. The implementation of the Internet of
Threads used in the experiments is based on Virtual Distributed
Ethernet (VDE), Contiki and View-OS. All the software presented
in this paper has been released under free software licenses and
is available for independent testing and evaluation
VXVDEX: Internet of threads and networks of namespaces
A network of namespaces (NoN) is a way to connect network namespaces defined on different hosts so that they appear to be interconnected on a (virtual) Local Area Network. A NoN protects the communications from malicious or accidental interception or intrusion originated by processes running in other NoN-s. A NoN could be defined using VLANs, veth, kernel bridge definitions, etc. It would be a daunting work for system administrator to define, update and maintain NoN-s defined in this way. The implementation of VXVDEX supports the zero configuration definition of NoN-s: users can connect their network namespaces running on a cluster of Linux hosts by themselves. VXVDEX performance is comparable to the kernel implementation of VXLAN

Teaching operating systems administration with user mode linux
User Mode Linux is a virtual machine running on a GNU-Linux operating system. It is the right choice for teaching operating systems ' administration, as it does not need any dedicated hardware. It runs at user level (no need for root, i.e. administrator, access or possible security threats) and it does not have the performance problems of an emulator. This paper describes how to set up a laboratory for teaching operating systems ' administration. Categories and Subject Descriptor
IPv6 Hash-Based Addresses for Simple Network Deployment
Abstract—The configuration of an IPv6 network is a rather
daunting and error-prone procedure for system administrators.
Each node must be provided with its own (128 bit long) IPv6
address and with a domain name manageable by human beings.
Autoconfiguration methods can give addresses to interfaces but
do not provide any means of configuring the DNS. This paper
presents some methods based on hash functions which highly
simplify the network configuration process. System administra-
tors just need to define the fully qualified domain names of all
the networking nodes (servers and clients) and the networking
prefixes for each LAN or subnet. Each node will acquire its
own IPv6 address and the DNS server will be automatically
configured to support name resolution for all the nodes. The
whole process does not require system administrators to type any
IPv6 addresses, and it is fully compatible with existing protocols
for autoconfiguration and name resolution
Computer Science Unplugged (edizione 2015)
I Computer sono ovunque. Tutti noi dobbiamo sapere come
usarli e molti di noi li usano tutti i giorni. Ma come funzionano? Come
pensano?
potervi divertire nell'imparare i principi dell'informatica coi vostri allievi.
online quali video, immagini e materiale didattico all'indirizzo
csunplugged.org.
