ECONOMIC THRESHOLDS UNDER UNCERTAINTY WITH APPLICATION TO CORN NEMATODE MANAGEMENT
An economic threshold of agricultural pest management is derived. Results provide a method for researchers to use in making improved pest control recommendations to farmers without farm level decision-making. An empirical illustration for lesion nematode management in irrigated corn is given and directions for further research are indicated.Crop Production/Industries, Risk and Uncertainty,
The maximum density droplet to lower density droplet transition in quantum dots
We show that, Landau level mixing in two-dimensional quantum dot wave
functions can be taken into account very effectively by multiplying the exact
lowest Landau level wave functions by a Jastrow factor which is optimized by
variance minimization. The comparison between exact diagonalization and fixed
phase diffusion Monte Carlo results suggests that the phase of the many-body
wave functions are not affected much by Landau level mixing. We apply these
wave functions to study the transition from the maximum density droplet state
(incipient integer quantum Hall state with angular momentum L=N(N-1)/2) to
lower density droplet states (L>N(N-1)/2).Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Real-Space Imaging of Alternate Localization and Extension of Quasi Two-Dimensional Electronic States at Graphite Surfaces in Magnetic Fields
We measured the local density of states (LDOS) of a quasi two-dimensional
(2D) electron system near point defects on a surface of highly oriented
pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.
Differential tunnel conductance images taken at very low temperatures and in
high magnetic fields show a clear contrast between localized and extended
spatial distributions of the LDOS at the valley and peak energies of the Landau
level spectrum, respectively. The localized electronic state has a single
circular distribution around the defects with a radius comparable to the
magnetic length. The localized LDOS is in good agreement with a spatial
distribution of a calculated wave function for a single electron in 2D in a
Coulomb potential in magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
First phylogenetic analyses of galaxy evolution
The Hubble tuning fork diagram, based on morphology, has always been the
preferred scheme for classification of galaxies and is still the only one
originally built from historical/evolutionary relationships. At the opposite,
biologists have long taken into account the parenthood links of living entities
for classification purposes. Assuming branching evolution of galaxies as a
"descent with modification", we show that the concepts and tools of
phylogenetic systematics widely used in biology can be heuristically transposed
to the case of galaxies. This approach that we call "astrocladistics" has been
first applied to Dwarf Galaxies of the Local Group and provides the first
evolutionary galaxy tree. The cladogram is sufficiently solid to support the
existence of a hierarchical organization in the diversity of galaxies, making
it possible to track ancestral types of galaxies. We also find that morphology
is a summary of more fundamental properties. Astrocladistics applied to
cosmology simulated galaxies can, unsurprisingly, reconstruct the correct
"genealogy". It reveals evolutionary lineages, divergences from common
ancestors, character evolution behaviours and shows how mergers organize galaxy
diversity. Application to real normal galaxies is in progress. Astrocladistics
opens a new way to analyse galaxy evolution and a path towards a new
systematics of galaxies
Qualitative Properties of the Dirac Equation in a Central Potential
The Dirac equation for a massive spin-1/2 field in a central potential V in
three dimensions is studied without fixing a priori the functional form of V.
The second-order equations for the radial parts of the spinor wave function are
shown to involve a squared Dirac operator for the free case, whose essential
self-adjointness is proved by using the Weyl limit point-limit circle
criterion, and a `perturbation' resulting from the potential. One then finds
that a potential of Coulomb type in the Dirac equation leads to a potential
term in the above second-order equations which is not even infinitesimally
form-bounded with respect to the free operator. Moreover, the conditions
ensuring essential self-adjointness of the second-order operators in the
interacting case are changed with respect to the free case, i.e. they are
expressed by a majorization involving the parameter in the Coulomb potential
and the angular momentum quantum number. The same methods are applied to the
analysis of coupled eigenvalue equations when the anomalous magnetic moment of
the electron is not neglected.Comment: 22 pages, plain Tex. In the final version, a section has been added,

Perancangan Desain Kemasan Premium Village Leather Berbasis Kayu dan Resin sebagai Upaya Menungkatkan Brand Awareness
The purpose of designing the packaging premium Village Leather based on the wood and resin is to increase brand awareness. The research done by using qualitative research methods by doing interviews, observation and documentation, and study of the library to get data that is used as a supporter of the making of the concept of design promotion media. The data has been analyzed using several stages, i.e. data reduction, presentation of data and the conclusions. From the analysis of the data found some key words that refers to the communication strategy promotional media that will be used to reach the target audiance intended. After the analysis of the data, clean the concept of keyword or design premium packaging design that is "precious". Description of the concept of precious is something valuable, glorious, and have aesthetic value more. The concept of "precious" aims to show that the design of the packaging premium Village Leather is seuah packaging design that has a different appeal to the other. The concept of precious aims to convey the identity of Village Leather through the design of the premium packaging design with the achieved brand awareness
Untangling the Conceptual Isssues Raised in Reydon and Scholz’s Critique of Organizational Ecology and Darwinian Populations
Reydon and Scholz raise doubts about the Darwinian status of organizational ecology by arguing that Darwinian principles are not applicable to organizational populations. Although their critique of organizational ecology’s typological essentialism is correct, they go on to reject the Darwinian status of organizational populations. This paper claims that the distinction between replicators and interactors, raised in modern philosophy of biology but not discussed by Reydon and Scholz, points the way forward for organizational ecologists. It is possible to conceptualise evolving Darwinian populations providing the inheritance mechanism is appropriately specified. By this approach, adaptation and selection are no longer dichotomised, and the evolutionary significance of knowledge transmission is highlightedPeer reviewe
Fitting Precision Electroweak Data with Exotic Heavy Quarks
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some
slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding and
quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a
more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional
interpretations of the top quark.Comment: 7 pages, no figure, 2 typos corrected, 1 reference update
