    Analyzing Effects of Institutional Quality on Banking Stability: Evidence from Asean Countries

    Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of institutional quality on bank stability using bank-level data from 2010 to 2020.   Theoretical framework: The study considers institutions from the perspective of governance institutions. Accordingly, the concept of government institutions is related to the country's organizational foundation in terms of governance, implying institutional quality.   Design/methodology/approach: The study uses GMM method and also choose the Zscore as the primary variable for bank stability.   Findings: The results show that institutional quality increases the stability of banks. Moreover, with the threshold model, the results show that countries with institutional quality above the threshold will increase the stability of banks. In addition, macroeconomic and banking characteristics variables such as total assets, income diversification, quality of control, inflation, and GDP growth rate have a high significance in the model.   Research, Practical & Social implications: The study shows The study's empirical results have specific policy implications for the Government in implementing policies related to institutional quality to improve bank stability.   Originality/value:   there are not many researches done to investigate institutional quality to improve bank stability. Moreover, from economic crisis, the matter of banking stability is among main concerns of many researches. Second, previous researches just focus on the aspect of corruption and ignore other aspects or other factors. That’s why authors conduct this research

    Antibacterial activities of ethanolic extract of four species of Rutaceae family

    In this study, the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract from the leaves of four Rutaceae species, including Acronychia pedunculata, Clausena excavata, Glycosmis pentaphylla and Luvunga scandens, were performed using the agar disk diffusion method for the first time. The ethanolic extracts from the leaves of A. pedunculata and G. pentaphylla were able to resist against all six bacterial strains with zones of inhibition for Bacillus cereus (17.3±2.1 mm, 20.8±1.0 mm) Staphylococcus aureus (8.5±0.5 mm, 17.6±0.3 mm) Escherichia coli (16.7±2.1 mm, 15.3±1.2 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.7±0.6 mm, 14.0±1.7 mm), Salmonella enteritidis (22.3±0.6 mm, 24.6±0.5 mm) and Salmonella typhimurium (9.5±0.9 mm, 8.3±0.6 mm). On the other hand, the ethanolic extract of C. excavata leaf was resistant to B. cereus (12.3±0.6 mm), S. aureus (11.6±0.5 mm), E. coli (11.5±2.1 mm), P. aeruginosa (10.6±0.3 mm) while B. cereus (8.2±0.3 mm), S. aureus (9.3±0.6 mm), E. coli (8.5±0.5 mm) and S. typhimurium (8.3±0.6 mm) were inhibited by the ethanolic extract of L. scandens leaf. This study could provide necessary information for further application of these species in medicine

    Species diversity of rotifers (Rotifera: Eurotatoria) of Phu Ninh Lake with five new records from Vietnam

    A total of sixty-one taxa of rotifer, belonging to 15 families, 3 orders were identified from the Phu Ninh Lake, Vietnam. Of these, five species were recorded new to Vietnam Rotifera fauna, including Lecane acanthinula (Hauer, 1938), L. sola (Hauer, 1936), L. thailandensis Segers & Sanoamuang, 1994, L. pyriformis (Daday, 1905), and Mytilina bisulcata (Lucks, 1912). The result raised the total number of rotifers known from Vietnam to 227 species. Moreover, the results showed that the number of species recorded increased with the increase of sample size, which followed the equation y=12.85+14.12log(x) (R2 = 0.99). Based on the estimators, the α-diversity of rotifers in Phu Ninh Lake might be up to 67±4 taxa (according to the Bootstrap index), 71±8 taxa (according to the Chao index), or even up to 79 taxa (according to Jacknife 2 index)

    N-terminal pro-B-type Natriuretic peptide levels and left atrial appendage thrombosis in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation

    Introduction: In hospitalized patients, atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia, and leading cause of cardio-embolic stroke. Objective: To evaluate the association between N-terminal b-type natriuretic peptide pro (NT-proBNP) and left atrial appendage thrombus in persistent atrial fibrillation patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study, enrolled 139 patients with persistent non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Transthoracic and trans-esophageal echocardiographs were performed in all patients. Results: Mean age was 70.5 ± 10.6 years, 80.6% male. In patients with LAAT, NT-proBNP was positively correlated with left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD) (r=0.345), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVEDS) (r= 0.449), E/e' (r=0.445), and left atrial spontaneous echo contrast (LA SEC) (r=0.478), and negatively correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (r=-0.473), left atrial strain (r= -0.301), strain rate (r= -0.283), and e'(r= -0.458). In patients without LAAT, NT-proBNP was positively correlated with LVEDD (r= 0.333), LVESD (r= 0.358), E (r= 0.318), E/e' (r= 0.411), left atrial volume index (LAVI) (r= 0.421), and negatively correlated with LVEF (r= -0.307). Plasma NT-proBNP (> 1279 pg/mL) could be used to predict LAAT (AUC= 0.639; Se= 67.7%, Sp= 60.2%). In patients with ejection fraction > 50%, the cutoff value of NT-proBNP to predict LAAT was 1325 pg/mL (AUC= 0.572; Se= 57.9%, Sp= 78.3%). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that prior stroke, E/e' index, and NT-proBNP correlated with LAAT (r= 0.887; p< 0.001; r= -0.092, p= 0.035 and 0.022; p= 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Plasma NT-proBNP levels and E/e' index are associated with LAAT in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation
