    The Character of Z-pole Data Constraints on Standard Model Parameters

    Despite the impressive precision of the Z-pole measurements made at LEP and SLC, the allowed region for the principle Standard Model parameters responsible for radiative corrections (the mass of the Higgs, the mass of the top and alpha(Mz)) is still large enough to encompass significant non-linearities. The nature of the experimental constraints therefore depends in an interesting way on the "accidental" relationships among the various measurements. In particular, the fact that the Z-pole measurements favor values of the Higgs mass excluded by direct searches leads us to examine the effects of external Higgsstrahlung, a process ignored by the usual precision electroweak calculations.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, REVTeX format; added reference in section IV; added paragraph on widths and a few cosmetic changes to correspond to published versio

    Increase in |S<sub>L</sub>| induced by channel coupling: the case of deuteron scattering

    For deuteron scattering from 58Ni at laboratory energies of 56, 79, and 120 MeV, we study the dynamic polarization potentials (DPPs) induced by S-wave and D-wave breakup (BU), separately and together, in order to gain insight into the nature of the DPP as well as a counterintuitive property: the existence of L values for which the BU coupling increases |SL|, a ‘wrong-way’ effect. The effect is associated with the existence of emissive regions in the imaginary DPP, suggesting a connection with the nonlocal nature of the DPP. The same relationship was previously found for 6Li scattering, indicating a generic effect bearing on the dynamics of nuclear reactions

    The effect of possible third party settlement on negotiation behaviour is studied in an economic bargaining experiment. The bargaining phase is preceded by a production phase that allows for different fairness principles to guide the division of the total production value. The experimental results show that a possible third party settlement lowers the dispute costs by reducing the number of rounds of alternating offers. In the presence of a third party, negotiators make first offers that are more strongly related to their production, which reduces the number of rounds of bargaining. The production phase has an effect on the distributional property of the settlements. In negotiations where third party settlement is an option, the negotiation outcome shifts towards a more unequal outcome, more in line with each person's contribution.Arbitration; Bargaining effciency; Experiment.

    The alkaline environment, pH approximately 11, in the anterior midgut lumen of mosquito larvae is essential for normal nutrition and development. The mechanism of alkalization is, however, unknown. Although evidence from immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and electrophysiology suggests that a V-ATPase is present in the basal membranes of the epithelial cells, its physiological role in the alkalization process has not been demonstrated. To investigate a possible role of the V-ATPase in lumen alkalization, pH gradients emanating from the hemolymph side of the midgut in semi-intact mosquito larvae were measured using non-invasive, self-referencing, ion-selective microelectrodes (SERIS). Large H+ concentration gradients, with highest concentrations close to the basal membrane (outward [H+] gradients), were found in the anterior midgut, whereas much smaller gradients, with concentrations lowest close to this membrane (inward [H+] gradients), were found in the gastric caeca and posterior midgut. Similar region-specific pH gradients, with consistent anterior-to-posterior profiles, were observed in individuals of two Aedes species, Aedes aegypti from semi-tropical Florida and Aedes canadensis from north-temperate Massachusetts. The gradients remained in a steady state for up to 6 h, the maximum duration of the recordings. Bafilomycin A1 (10(-5), 10(-7 )mol x l(-1)) on the hemolymph side greatly diminished the [H+] gradients in the anterior midgut but had no effect on the gradients in the gastric caecum and posterior midgut. These physiological data are consistent with the previous findings noted above. Together, they support the hypothesis that a basal, electrogenic H+ V-ATPase energizes luminal alkalization in the anterior midgut of larval mosquitoes
