Sine-Gordon Field Theory for the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Membranes
In the preceding paper, we derived Coulomb-gas and sine-Gordon Hamiltonians
to describe the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition on a fluctuating surface. These
Hamiltonians contain couplings to Gaussian curvature not found in a rigid flat
surface. In this paper, we derive renormalization-group recursion relations for
the sine-Gordon model using field-theoretic techniques developed to study flat
space problems.Comment: REVTEX, 14 pages with 6 postscript figures compressed using uufiles.

Photoinduced Magnetization in a Thin Fe-CN-Co Film
The magnetization of a thin Fe-Co cyanide film has been investigated from 5 K
to 300 K and in fields up to 500 G. Upon illumination with visible light, the
magnetization of the film rapidly increases. The original cluster glass
behavior is further developed in the photoinduced state and shows substantial
changes in critical temperature and freezing temperature.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, International Conference on Magnetism

Topological Defects on Fluctuating Surfaces: General Properties and the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition
We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a free
fluctuating membrane and derive both a Coulomb gas and a sine-Gordon
Hamiltonian to describe it. The Coulomb-gas Hamiltonian includes charge
densities arising from disclinations and from Gaussian curvature. There is an
interaction coupling the difference between these two densities, whose strength
is determined by the hexatic rigidity, and an interaction coupling Gaussian
curvature densities arising from the Liouville Hamiltonian resulting from the
imposition of a covariant cutoff. In the sine-Gordon Hamiltonian, there is a
linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. We discuss
gauge-invariant correlation function for hexatic order and the dielectric
constant of the Coulomb gas. We also derive renormalization group recursion
relations that predict a transition with decreasing bending rigidity .Comment: REVTEX, 45 pages with 11 postscript figures compressed using uufiles.

Measurements of the Composite Fermion masses from the spin polarization of 2-D electrons in the region
Measurements of the reflectivity of a 2-D electron gas are used to deduce the
polarization of the Composite Fermion hole system formed for Landau level
occupancies in the regime 1<\nu<2. The measurements are consistent with the
formation of a mixed spin CF system and allow the density of states or
`polarization' effective mass of the CF holes to be determined. The mass values
at \nu=3/2 are found to be ~1.9m_{e} for electron densities of 4.4 x 10^{11}
cm^{-2}, which is significantly larger than those found from measurements of
the energy gaps at finite values of effective magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 fig
Two-Dimensional Diffusion in the Presence of Topological Disorder
How topological defects affect the dynamics of particles hopping between
lattice sites of a distorted, two-dimensional crystal is addressed.
Perturbation theory and numerical simulations show that weak, short-ranged
topological disorder leads to a finite reduction of the diffusion coefficient.
Renormalization group theory and numerical simulations suggest that
longer-ranged disorder, such as that from randomly placed dislocations or
random disclinations with no net disclinicity, leads to subdiffusion at long
times.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Out-of-equilibrium singlet-triplet Kondo effect in a single C_60 quantum dot
We have used an electromigration technique to fabricate a
single-molecule transistor (SMT). Besides describing our electromigration
procedure, we focus and present an experimental study of a single molecule
quantum dot containing an even number of electrons, revealing, for two
different samples, a clear out-of-equilibrium Kondo effect. Low temperature
magneto-transport studies are provided, which demonstrates a Zeeman splitting
of the finite bias anomaly.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
The horizon and its charges in the first order gravity
In this work the algebra of charges of diffeomorphisms at the horizon of
generic black holes is analyzed within first order gravity. This algebra
reproduces the algebra of diffeomorphisms at the horizon, (Diff(S^1)), without
central extension
Compton Scattering on the Deuteron in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
Compton scattering on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon
chiral perturbation theory to third order in small momenta, for photon energies
of order the pion mass. The scattering amplitude is a sum of one- and
two-nucleon mechanisms with no undetermined parameters. Our results are in good
agreement with existing experimental data, and a prediction is made for
higher-energy data being analyzed at SAL.Comment: 39 pages LaTeX, 19 figures (uses epsf
