    Learning to learn: improving attainment, closing the gap at Key Stage 3

    In 2010, a comprehensive secondary school in the south of England implemented a whole-school approach to ‘learning to learn’ (L2L). Drawing on a range of evidence-based practices, a team of teachers worked collaboratively to design and deliver a taught L2L curriculum to all students throughout Key Stage 3. In total, the first cohort of students (n = 118) received more than 400 taught lessons throughout years 7–9. The impact of L2L on student attainment at Sea View was evaluated over those 3 years, using the pre-L2L cohort as a matched control group (n = 148). By the end of year 9, a significantly higher proportion of L2L students were either hitting or exceeding their target grades, compared with the control group. There was also a significant closing of the attainment gap between students eligible for the pupil premium and their peers (2%, vs. 25% in the control group). Key features of the L2L approach at Sea View are considered in terms of similarities and differences with other L2L approaches. Conclusions are drawn that the success of this approach lies in the combination of multiple effective practices. Recommendations for further research and development of the field are proposed

    Production of Υ(nS) mesons in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at 5.02 TeV

    A measurement of the production of vector bottomonium states, Υ ( 1S ) , Υ ( 2S ) , and Υ ( 3S ) , in Pb + Pb and p p collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 1.38 nb − 1 of Pb + Pb data collected in 2018, 0.44 nb − 1 of Pb + Pb data collected in 2015, and 0.26 fb − 1 of p p data collected in 2017 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the dimuon decay channel for transverse momentum p μ μ T < 30 GeV , absolute rapidity | y μ μ | < 1.5 , and Pb + Pb event centrality 0–80%. The production rates of the three bottomonium states in Pb + Pb collisions are compared with those in p p collisions to extract the nuclear modification factors as functions of event centrality, p μ μ T , and | y μ μ | . In addition, the suppression of the excited states relative to the ground state is studied. The results are compared with theoretical model calculations

    Comparative studies of PC12 and mouse pheochromocytoma-derived rodent cell lines as models for the study of neuroendocrine systems

    We have compared PC12 cell lines derived from different laboratories and the newly developed mouse pheochromocytoma (MPC) cell line. Morphologically, there were distinct differences in size, shape, adherence, and clumping behavior, which varied in response to different culture media, growth substrates, and nerve growth factor. Quantitative messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) analysis showed significant variability in the expression of the catecholaminergic biosynthetic enzymes tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), the noradrenaline transporter (NAT), and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) between all lines examined. Of most significance were the increased levels of PNMT mRNA in the MPC cells, which were to 15-fold greater than in the PC12 cell lines grown under the same conditions in Dulbecco modified Eagle medium (P ≤ 0.05). Growth of MPC cells in Roswell Park Memorial Institute media induced a further significant increase in PNMT gene expression (P ≤ 0.05). Immunohistochemistry for TH, PNMT, and NAT was generally consistent with mRNA analysis, with the MPC cells demonstrating strong immunoreactivity for PNMT. The MPC cells showed the highest levels of desipramine-sensitive [3H] noradrenaline uptake activity (threefold > than PC12 American Type Culture Center line, P ≤ 0.05), despite relatively low levels of NAT mRNA. These results indicate that PC12 cell lines should be carefully chosen for optimal utility in the study of chromaffin cell or sympathetic neuron biology and that cell features will be influenced by type of media and substrate chosen. Furthermore, they confirm that the new MPC cell line is likely a useful model for the study of adrenergic mechanisms or studies involving NAT

    Measurements of regional cerebral blood flow and cognitive performance in Alzheimer's disease

    Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with 99mTc-HMPAO was used to image 26 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and 10 healthy controls. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) data indicated a relative sparing of the occipital regions in DAT. Normalisation to occipital flow illustrated highly significant CBF deficits in a number of cortical regions, particularly in the left and right posterior--temporal cortex in DAT compared to controls. The cognitive performance of DAT patients was measured using a clinical cognitive assessment procedure (CAMCOG) and numerous correlations between these scores and rCBF were obtained.     Current status of arsenic contamination in drinking water and treatment practice in some rural areas of West Bengal, India

    The aim of the present investigation was to draw the current scenario of arsenic (As) contamination in drinking water of community tube well and drinking water treated by tube wells installed with different adsorbent media-based treatment plants in districts Nadia, Hooghly and North 24-Parganas districts, West Bengal, India. As removal efficiencies of different treatment plants varied from 23 to 71%, which is largely governed by adsorption capacity of adsorbent and influencing environmental factors. Though investigated treatment plants removed substantial amount of As from tube well water, high As concentration in treated drinking water was retained after passing through the treatment plants. This high level of As concentration in tube well water and retention of high As concentration in treated drinking water were severe for the consumers which therefore, indicating the improvement of removal efficiency of treatment plant by meticulously considering favorable influencing factors or/and application of other high capacity treatment alternatives to adsorb the excess As retained in drinking water and regular monitoring of As concentration in the treated drinking water are indispensable
