Dynamic Vortex Phases and Pinning in Superconductors with Twin Boundaries
We investigate the pinning and driven dynamics of vortices interacting with
twin boundaries using large scale molecular dynamics simulations on samples
with near one million pinning sites. For low applied driving forces, the vortex
lattice orients itself parallel to the twin boundary and we observe the
creation of a flux gradient and vortex free region near the edges of the twin
boundary. For increasing drive, we find evidence for several distinct dynamical
flow phases which we characterize by the density of defects in the vortex
lattice, the microscopic vortex flow patterns, and orientation of the vortex
lattice. We show that these different dynamical phases can be directly related
to microscopically measurable voltage - current V(I) curves and voltage noise.
By conducting a series of simulations for various twin boundary parameters we
derive several vortex dynamic phase diagrams.Comment: 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Superconducting gap in the presence of bilayer splitting in underdoped Bi(Pb)2212
The clearly resolved bilayer splitting in ARPES spectra of the underdoped
Pb-Bi2212 compound rises the question of how the bonding and antibonding sheets
of the Fermi surface are gapped in the superconducting state. Here we compare
the superconducting gaps for both split components and show that within the
experimental uncertainties they are identical. By tuning the relative intensity
of the bonding and antibonding bands using different excitation conditions we
determine the precise {\bf k}-dependence of the leading edge gap. Significant
deviations from the simple cos()-cos() gap function for the

, we have made the first observation of a
mass renormalization or "kink" in the E vs. dispersion relation
localized near . Compared to the kink observed along the nodal
direction, this new effect is clearly stronger, appears at a lower energy near
40 meV, and is only present in the superconducting state. The kink energy scale
defines a cutoff below which well-defined quasiparticle excitations occur. This
effect is likely due to coupling to a bosonic excitation, with the most
plausible candidate being the magnetic resonance mode observed in inelastic
neutron scattering

Thermally induced evolution of morphology on ceramic surfaces in a thermionic converter
The morphology of alumina and scandia ceramics exposed to controlled vacuum and diffusion modes in a thermionic converter has been studied. Evidence for vaporization at a temperature of 1,770 K is manifest in the resulting surface morphologies of both ceramics, consistent with reported sample mass loss. Alumina shows intergranular relief with the formation of terrace--step structure on the grain surfaces. Terrace formation is not directly observed on scandia, however the development of vertical structure and maintenance of voids indicates that vaporization is initiated by structure at the grain edges. Extensive Sc{sub 2}O{sub 3} re-deposition occurs on the scandia surface, possibly mediated by the presence of molybdenum and tungsten. Evidence exists for refractory metal secondary phase formation in this deposit in the form of Sc{sub 6}MO{sub 12} (M = W or Mo). Alumina also shows evidence for materials` interactions in the form of tantalum assisted vaporization which significantly alters the terrace structure

Fused-salt-liquid-metal corrosion of refractory alloys in the presence of hot cell impurities
The pyrochemical conditioning of spent nuclear fuel for the purpose of final disposal is currently being demonstrated at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). One aspect of this program is to develop a lithium preprocessing stage for the Fuel Conditioning Facility (FCF). Furthermore, a pilot scale of this preprocessing stage is being designed by ANL-W to demonstrate the in situ hot cell capability of this process. In this pilot scale system, fused lithium chloride salt is saturated with molten lithium to form a powerful fluxing compound with a vigorous reducing agent. During this stage of the fuel conditioning, the reduction will take place at a nominal temperature of 650 C in an argon-cell atmosphere contaminated with up to 10,000 ppm nitrogen, 100 ppm oxygen and 100 ppm of moisture. The maximum local temperature was calculated to be 725 C on the inner shell of the reduction vessel during operation. One of the significant concerns of this project is the system`s corrosion response in the presence of irradiated commercial fuel as well as atmospheric impurities. The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the potential corrosivity of the salt matrix in a worse case environment as well as provide a boundary for allowable impurities in the system during operation
Using behavior-analytic implicit tests to assess sexual interests among normal and sex-offender populations
The development of implicit tests for measuring biases and behavioral predispositions is a recent development within psychology. While such tests are usually researched within a social-cognitive paradigm, behavioral researchers have also begun to view these tests as potential tests of conditioning histories, including in the sexual domain.
The objective of this paper is to illustrate the utility of a behavioral approach to implicit testing and means by which implicit tests can be built to the standards of behavioral psychologists.
Research findings illustrating the short history of implicit testing within the experimental analysis of behavior are reviewed. Relevant parallel and overlapping research findings from the field of social cognition and on the Implicit Association Test are also outlined.
New preliminary data obtained with both normal and sex offender populations are described in order to illustrate how behavior-analytically conceived implicit tests may have potential as investigative tools for assessing histories of sexual arousal conditioning and derived stimulus associations.
It is concluded that popular implicit tests are likely sensitive to conditioned and derived stimulus associations in the history of the test-taker rather than 'unconscious cognitions', per se
HDAC4 reduction: a novel therapeutic strategy to target cytoplasmic huntingtin and ameliorate neurodegeneration
Histone deacetylase (HDAC) 4 is a transcriptional repressor that contains a glutamine-rich domain. We hypothesised that it may be involved in the molecular pathogenesis of Huntington's disease (HD), a protein-folding neurodegenerative disorder caused by an aggregation-prone polyglutamine expansion in the huntingtin protein. We found that HDAC4 associates with huntingtin in a polyglutamine-length-dependent manner and co-localises with cytoplasmic inclusions. We show that HDAC4 reduction delayed cytoplasmic aggregate formation, restored Bdnf transcript levels, and rescued neuronal and cortico-striatal synaptic function in HD mouse models. This was accompanied by an improvement in motor coordination, neurological phenotypes, and increased lifespan. Surprisingly, HDAC4 reduction had no effect on global transcriptional dysfunction and did not modulate nuclear huntingtin aggregation. Our results define a crucial role for the cytoplasmic aggregation process in the molecular pathology of HD. HDAC4 reduction presents a novel strategy for targeting huntingtin aggregation, which may be amenable to small-molecule therapeutics
Lambda Hyperons in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu Collisions
A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained
with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the
invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda
directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the
characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse
expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is
observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112
+/- 24 mb is deduced. Detailed comparisons with the ARC and RVUU models are
