Neural changes following cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis: A longitudinal study
A growing body of evidence demonstrates that persistent positive symptoms, particularly delusions, can be improved by cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis. Heightened perception and processing of threat are believed to constitute the genesis of delusions. The present study aimed to examine functional brain changes following cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis. The study involved 56 outpatients with one or more persistent positive distressing symptoms of schizophrenia. Twenty-eight patients receiving cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis for 6–8 months in addition to their usual treatment were matched with 28 patients receiving treatment as usual. Patients’ symptoms were assessed by a rater blind to treatment group, and they underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during an affect processing task at baseline and end of treatment follow-up. The two groups were comparable at baseline in terms of clinical and demographic parameters and neural and behavioural responses to facial and control stimuli. The cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis with treatment-as-usual group (22 subjects) showed significant clinical improvement compared with the treatment-as-usual group (16 subjects), which showed no change at follow-up. The cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis with treatment-as-usual group, but not the treatment-as-usual group, showed decreased activation of the inferior frontal, insula, thalamus, putamen and occipital areas to fearful and angry expressions at treatment follow-up compared with baseline. Reduction of functional magnetic resonance imaging response during angry expressions correlated directly with symptom improvement. This study provides the first evidence that cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis attenuates brain responses to threatening stimuli and suggests that cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis may mediate symptom reduction by promoting processing of threats in a less distressing way
Impacts of Mangrove Density on Surface Sediment Accretion, Belowground Biomass and Biogeochemistry in Puttalam Lagoon, Sri Lanka
Understanding the effects of seedling density on sediment accretion, biogeochemistry and 3 belowground biomass in mangrove systems can help explain ecological functioning and inform 4 appropriate planting densities during restoration or climate change mitigation programs. The 5 objectives of this study were to examine: 1) impacts of mangrove seedling density on surface 6 sediment accretion, texture, belowground biomass and biogeochemistry, and 2) origins of the 7 carbon (C) supplied to the mangroves in Palakuda, Puttalam Lagoon, Sri Lanka. Rhizophora 8 mucronata propagules were planted at densities of 6.96, 3.26, 1.93 and 0.95 seedlings m-2 along 9 with an unplanted control (0 seedlings m-2). The highest seedling density generally had higher 10 sediment accretion rates, finer sediments, higher belowground biomass, greatest number of fine 11 roots and highest concentrations of C and N (and the lowest C/N ratio). Sediment accretion rates,12 belowground biomass (over 1370 days), and C and N concentrations differed significantly 13 between seedling densities. Fine roots were significantly greater compared to medium and coarse 14 roots across all plantation densities. Sulphur and carbon stable isotopes did not vary significantly 15 between different density treatments. Isotope signatures suggest surface sediment C (to a depth 16 of 1 cm) is not derived predominantly from the trees, but from seagrass adjacent to the site
A geometric discretisation scheme applied to the Abelian Chern-Simons theory
We give a detailed general description of a recent geometrical discretisation
scheme and illustrate, by explicit numerical calculation, the scheme's ability
to capture topological features. The scheme is applied to the Abelian
Chern-Simons theory and leads, after a necessary field doubling, to an
expression for the discrete partition function in terms of untwisted
Reidemeister torsion and of various triangulation dependent factors. The
discrete partition function is evaluated computationally for various
triangulations of and of lens spaces. The results confirm that the
discretisation scheme is triangulation independent and coincides with the

Delocalization and spin-wave dynamics in ferromagnetic chains with long-range correlated random exchange
We study the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet with exchange
couplings exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum
proportional to , where is the wave-vector of the modulations
on the random coupling landscape. By using renormalization group, integration
of the equations of motion and exact diagonalization, we compute the spin-wave
localization length and the mean-square displacement of the wave-packet. We
find that, associated with the emergence of extended spin-waves in the
low-energy region for , the wave-packet mean-square displacement
changes from a long-time super-diffusive behavior for to a
long-time ballistic behavior for . At the vicinity of ,
the mobility edge separating the extended and localized phases is shown to

Alcohol taxes’ contribution to prices in high and middle-income countries : data from the International Alcohol Control Study
The paper draws on data from six participating countries of the International Alcohol Control Study to examine and evaluate their comparative prices and tax regimes. Both ad valorem and specific per unit of alcohol taxation systems are represented among the six countries. The prices differ widely between countries even though presented in terms of Purchasing Power Parity. The percentage of tax in the final price also varies widely but is much lower than the 75% goal set by the World Health Organization. There is a higher proportion of abstainers in middle-income countries and men drink much more alcohol than women
Delocalization in harmonic chains with long-range correlated random masses
We study the nature of collective excitations in harmonic chains with masses
exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to
, where is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random
masses landscape. Using a transfer matrix method and exact diagonalization, we
compute the localization length and participation ratio of eigenmodes within
the band of allowed energies. We find extended vibrational modes in the
low-energy region for . In order to study the time evolution of an
initially localized energy input, we calculate the second moment of
the energy spatial distribution. We show that , besides being dependent
of the specific initial excitation and exhibiting an anomalous diffusion for
weakly correlated disorder, assumes a ballistic spread in the regime

The Cerenkov effect revisited: from swimming ducks to zero modes in gravitational analogs
We present an interdisciplinary review of the generalized Cerenkov emission
of radiation from uniformly moving sources in the different contexts of
classical electromagnetism, superfluid hydrodynamics, and classical
hydrodynamics. The details of each specific physical systems enter our theory
via the dispersion law of the excitations. A geometrical recipe to obtain the
emission patterns in both real and wavevector space from the geometrical shape
of the dispersion law is discussed and applied to a number of cases of current
experimental interest. Some consequences of these emission processes onto the
stability of condensed-matter analogs of gravitational systems are finally

Numerical simulations of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium
In this paper we review the current predictions of numerical simulations for
the origin and observability of the warm hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), the
diffuse gas that contains up to 50 per cent of the baryons at z~0. During
structure formation, gravitational accretion shocks emerging from collapsing
regions gradually heat the intergalactic medium (IGM) to temperatures in the
range T~10^5-10^7 K. The WHIM is predicted to radiate most of its energy in the
ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray bands and to contribute a significant fraction of
the soft X-ray background emission. While O VI and C IV absorption systems
arising in the cooler fraction of the WHIM with T~10^5-10^5.5 K are seen in
FUSE and HST observations, models agree that current X-ray telescopes such as
Chandra and XMM-Newton do not have enough sensitivity to detect the hotter
WHIM. However, future missions such as Constellation-X and XEUS might be able
to detect both emission lines and absorption systems from highly ionised atoms

Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries in Forward-Angle Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering
We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering
of transversely-polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q^2 =
0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)^2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely
using the elastic nucleon intermediate state, and generally agree with
calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state
contributions. A_n provides a direct probe of the imaginary component of the
2-gamma exchange amplitude, the complete description of which is important in
